As with Manchester last year GOVERNMENT BORDER FORCE is the problem but passengers blame airport spurred on by Birmingham media!

The problem is if the passenger has a bad experience at an airport they say they had a bad experience at BHX, for example.

Passengers don't always know the root cause - border force, baggage handlers, baggage belts etc. They don't needed to. At the end of the day the airport management are responsible. They appoint the baggage handlers and pointing complaining passengers to the handlers is poor management.

The airport should collect the complaint information and then challenge the company with the full facts. If you complain about a bad steak in a restaurant you don't expect to be given the phone number of the butcher.

Admittedly Border Force is slightly different - the airport cannot change them for another. The airport management (and their social media accounts) should be more sympathetic and say they will take the matter up with BF. They can offer the direct complaint route at the same time.

Their current response to complaints of "sorry to hear that. It is responsibility of X please email complaint to X at ....." is just not acceptable customer care in a competitive world where people have a choice.

A more caring response from the airport will help a lot. Then the airport management need to get stuck in to the organisations causing the problems and sort them out. Again BF is a bit harder but the airport could approach the press - not just after an incident - with details of discussions they have had with BF to try to resolve the problems. This might then encourage the press to seek a response from BF.

The current "don't blame me blame him" response is just not acceptable.

Sorry - rant over.

I've read a recent tweet from @bhx_official which said that the airport forwards predicted pax numbers to UKBA.

My guess is that the fault lies with UKBA.

I'd tend to agree.

If BHX are constantly on to UKBF complaining about the staffing levels it could just be seen as a bit of whinging.

If members of the public are complaining directly to UKBF they (theoretically) need to do something about it, this could be why BHX forward the complaint link.

The more people that complain the quicker something should (hopefully) be done. I wonder how many of those who complain do actually go on to fill out the form, it would be interesting to know.

It would also be interesting to know whether this 'scrum' appears simultaneously in both T1 and T2 as I have always found T2 customs queues reasonable, perhaps a max of 10 minutes to get through. Also, are the UKBF personnel flexible in that they can move from T1 to T2 customs as and when it might be prudent to do so. Or are they fixed positions for the duration of their shift?

As far as I know they can be deployed as needed. When it had passenger flights I seem to remember hearing that UKBF from BHX also manned Coventry.

I suppose that the UKBF, like so many public services, has suffered substantial cuts to its numbers and isn't always in a position to field the number of personnel it might do in more favourable circumstances. It's not just BHX. You read complaints from the public about lengthy delays coming through Immigration at many UK airports.

As has already been alluded to, many passengers blame the airport in question as they seem to believe that the airport somehow has control and responsibility to ensure that there are sufficient numbers of UKBF staff available.

not quite certain where to post this, but can we get the header for this group changed so that the passenger numbers figure is up to date? :):woot:

Above my remit I'm afraid but I'm sure that Aviador will be on to it when he's back from his travels.

#Aviador, for info the 2016 total was 11,645,334 but we have recently passed 12 million in the rolling 12 month totals.

I've now updated the information on the BHX header. Is this ok now? I can alter it again if necessary.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
