Emirates second daily A380 service commences in Birmingham

Emirates, a global connector of people, places and economies, commences its second daily A380 service out of Birmingham yesterday (29th October 2017), less than two years after its inaugural A380 flight from the city.

The introduction of the double-daily A380 service was driven by huge demand from passengers in Birmingham to travel on the iconic aircraft. Since the first A380 service from Dubai to Birmingham launched on 27th March 2016, nearly 500,000 passengers have flown on the aircraft between the two cities.

Emirates started flying to Birmingham on 18 December 2000 as a daily service to Dubai, operated by a 278-seat Airbus A330. Since then, Emirates has carried over 5.2 million passengers between Dubai and Birmingham. In its first full year of operations out of the city, Emirates carried just under 70,000 passengers. The growth in popularity of the route is clear, with over 40,000 passengers carried during a record July alone.

Home to Villa Park and Aston Villa Football Club, as well as St Andrew’s, home of rivals Birmingham City Football Club - visitors enjoy the city’s rich footballing heritage. Historic sites such as the Grade I listed Jacobean mansion Aston Hall joins the Symphony Hall and Hippodrome Theatre on the list of Birmingham’s must- see cultural attractions.

Laurie Berryman, Emirates Vice President, UK, said: “The launch of the second daily A380 service shows our continued commitment to this important route, allowing more passengers travelling from Birmingham to take advantage of our A380 to A380 connectivity via Dubai.

“Thanks to its strategic position in the Midlands, the route allows both visitors and businesses to travel to Dubai and beyond from the heart of the UK. Now in its seventeenth year, we have seen a pronounced growth in the popularity of our Birmingham service and look forward to a bright future with our twice daily A380 service.”

William Pearson, Aviation Director commented: “We are delighted that Emirates has launched a second A380 service from Birmingham to Dubai with this iconic aircraft. Emirates’ hub in Dubai offers connections to 154 destinations, over six continents, giving our region’s travellers global connectivity with an award-winning airline.

“Having this additional capacity on the lunchtime service to Dubai and onwards ensures flexibility and choice for passengers and also shows the commitment that Emirates has in the Midlands region.”

Emirates’ flight EK39 departs from Dubai at 07:25hrs and arrives in Birmingham at 11:25hrs. The outbound flight, EK40, departs from Birmingham at 13:30hrs and arrives in Dubai at 00:35hrs the following day.

This year, Emirates was recognised as the ‘Best Airline in the World’ at the TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards for airlines. The award was based on thousands of reviews Emirates received from the TripAdvisor community over the past twelve months. Emirates was the most positively reviewed airline in the industry over that period of time.

Passengers travelling in Business Class also enjoy access to a dedicated lounge at Birmingham Airport as well as Emirates’ convenient Chauffeur-drive service to and from the airport within a 70-mile radius.

Apologies if this is a stupid question, but is there a reason the one-off flights are using a different flight number (EK2643/2644) to the previous third daily flight (EK41/42) ?

I for one am hoping they don't reassign the flight number to another route and the third daily comes back in the next couple of years! :)

Hi nbdm

EK2643/2644 is a one off (as far as I'm aware) extra flight, to cope with the post Christmas rush. This will be an evening operation at BHX, not the timing of EK41/42.
Emirates have stated that EK41/42 is suspended not cancelled. As such, I would expect the flight numbers to be reserved for a hopeful resumption of that service at some point in the future.

Kevin

They are rumoured to be ordering A380s as well. Is there any confirmation of that yet?

Is it just me or would EK have been better off ordering the 787-8? Provides more variety of seating capacity than the 777, could allow them to serve destinations like Lyon, Bristol/Cardiff and Helsinki that they've possibly missed out on due to the lack of suitable aircraft and add new frequencies to routes like Birmingham, Manchester & Glasgow whilst they are marginal.

Emirates set to throw Airbus's A380 a lifeline with major order
Airbus’s troubled A380 airliner will be thrown a lifeline when Gulf carrier Emirates places a multi-billion dollar order for the “superjumbo” jets.

Not too sure if this is confirmed yet or whether the article was based on rumours. I hope Airbus do receive this order. It will be a shame if we get to a point where we no longer see any four engine-ed aircraft at our airports.

Yeah fingers crossed they do order them. It would be nice for an airline to have faith with 4 engined aircraft.

I think it's more about cost than faith though. The fuel burn on those 4 engines must be sizeable, even for such a modern aircraft.

What was the reason for suspending the morning flight? I suppose having two A380s might make up for that to some extent though.

Hi there ray and all, I couldn't agree with you anymore, not only a nice little earner. Again if this is marketed like Jet2 and how Primera Air are promoting, then who knows what it will bring, hopefully a new beginning for Emirates altogether and hopefully expand A350 demand even more... AndyC

It would be fantastic if Emirates re-thought their A350 turndown, but I fear not AC. I would think that the additions will be very popular and as you say, marketing is key.

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
