Think you can buy specialy lined wallets to prevent it.
Until they find a way of getting around that.

I've just watch a piece on BBC News 24 about cybercrime. It's frightening how relatively easy it is for anyone of even moderate computer skills to get hold of software and programs on the so-called 'Dark Web' that will open up all sorts of criminal cyber doors.

I'm sure I'm a dinosaur when it comes to such things but I won't run any bank or savings accounts online. I might lose out a bit with interest but I believe that if it's possible to hack into the Pentagon then it will surely be possible to hack into my bank account.

It was brought home to me a few years ago when I booked some accommodation online with a credit card only to find that within a day someone had used my credit card fraudulently. The credit card company did brilliantly. Their system recognised an unusual payment and prompty blocked the card. It led to some inconvenience and a little embarrassment for my wife when she tried using her card on the same account in a local shop to find it had been blocked - we weren't aware of the fraudulent attempt at that time.

There are things such as low-cost airline travel where the Internet is the only realistic way to buy but I'm always very cautious, and in fact we now have a second credit card with a low spending limit that we only use for Internet spending, and only then when there is no alternative to buying something online.

I'm sure that at some point in the future credit/debit cards and whatever future developments in that field come along will be the only way to spend, but I doubt that I shall be around then. For some reason I keep getting emails exhorting me to go along the Bitcoin route. I assume that's what they are from the email heading because I never open them.

I must admit that I now carry my cards in a special safety case that is suppose to protect against RFID scanning - exactly how effective it is I don't know, but at least it is a bit of a deterrent. The cost was less that £10.00.

I go cash only abroad. Always a risk but only take what I need for the day but stash the rest somewhere noone will look in the hotel or apartment. Never had a problem.

But had money nicked in London.

45 Years ago today....

My first flight in a wide-bodied aircraft! As a very excited 10 year old, we travelled from Bloxwich to LGW for a flight to JFK. Our ultimate destination being a suburb of Philadelphia to stay for 2 weeks with relatives.
I knew we were flying with Laker Airways, but had no idea of the aircraft type. As we came to board, there were two Laker Airways aircraft at the end of the pier, a B720 and a DC-10 (both boarding at the same time). It wasn't until we showed our boarding passes, that we were directed to the DC-10. My excitement increased exponentially!
The aircraft was DC-10-10, G-AZZD 'Western Belle'.
I'm sure my Dad knew the aircraft type, but he kept it quiet. This may have been to keep my surprise to the last moment - I was already 'aircraft mad', or possibly not to worry my sister (who was, and still is terrified of flying), being only about 6 weeks after the Turkish Airlines DC-10 crash departing Paris.
The flight was amazing. I'd never seen an in-flight movie before. The meal was one of the best I've ever had on an aircraft, with tender steak, potatoes and vegetables. I even had a flight-deck visit.
The holiday was equally impressive. My Uncle and Aunt had arranged something for every day of our visit. Highlights being a day spent in a US school (equivalent to our primary schools - No, seriously it was very interesting), a 'VIP' visit to the 'Philadelphia Phillies' (here, we were given a guided tour by their ((then)) star player), a trip to the Smithsonian Institute in Washington along with seeing the Whitehouse, the Kennedy Memorial and a trip to the top of the Washington Monument. The views of Washington National airport (since re-named 'Reagan National') were exceptional.
One other thing I discovered was 'scrapple'. I was given this for breakfast on my first morning at my Uncle and Aunt's house. I was told it contained 'every part of the pig except the squeal' (I think it's a Philadelphia specialty). It was much like sausage meat and I loved it. I had it for breakfast every day that we were there.
The flight home was less memorable as take-off was after midnight and as a 10 year old, I soon fell asleep. One thing does intrigue me though. On boarding the aircraft, I thought I read 'Western Bell' painted on the nose of the aircraft. Shortly after we returned home, there was a documentary about the Turkish Airlines DC-10 crash near Paris. In this program, it was stated that the only British registered DC-10 that (at the time) hadn't received the cargo door latch lock update was G-AZZC 'Eastern belle'. On the outbound journey (G-AZZD), every seat back pocket had a leaflet saying that the upgrade had been carried out. On the return flight there were no leaflets. Did my tired eyes miss-read 'Eastern Belle' for 'Western Belle', or were leaflets just not placed in the seat back pockets? I guess I'll never know for sure.

Sweet memories!

Kevin

Does not affect BHX, but Jet Airways have cancelled all international operations. Not enough aircraft and serious debt issues - not making lease payments etc. Hopefully they will survive but the industry woes spreading.

Yes BrumX interesting fotos. It is interesting to see what i always knew as 'the Hockley Clock' now seems quote dwarfed by its surroundings. the last time i was in that area it seemed quite a prominent feature.

Times they are achangin'...

What a job the fire fighters did. My Frenchness came out last night. Chapeau. And what an attitude. It is still burning and donations were coming in for the rebuild.

Nearly two years on from Grenfell and our pathetic lot are still arguing. And people blame the foreigners....duh.

Sorry but i really don't understand any how comparison can be made between the Grenfell and Notre Dame fires.
The comparison is how slow we have been in this country and unlike notre dame the urgency in this country should have been more intense given that it affected so many peoples lives. It is a shambles and a disgrace.

That's the way we are unfortunately. Remember the Windsor Castle fire when the reaction was largely "well were not paying for that to be restored."
Or the fire at York Minster a few years ago ,a building just as impressive as Notre Dame. I cannot really remember the reaction to that which
says it all really.
It certainly wasn't reported as is some global disaster had occurred and we should all dress in our mourning clothes.
I guess the media are just happy to have something to replace Brexit to lead with and boy are they milking it.

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!
If anyone would like to share their local airport news right here in our news area let me know so I can give you the correct permissions to do so. It only takes a couple of minutes to upload a news story with an accompanying image. survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
