From Summer 1990 when there was a nice variety of charters and scheduled traffic.
.A summary of the BHX based Airlines for Summer 1990.With BA they have 10 1-11`s based at any one time with aircraft rotating through MAN frequently, these are mostly ex BCAL machines. On 10/6 1-11 G-BJRT was involved in an emergency when a windscreen blew out on flight BA5390 BHX-AGP sucking out the captain who miraculously survived.(I have since found out that I had flown on the same plane on 1/6/1990 BHX-FRA!) An ATP arrives from GLA on Sunday returning next Sat after operating DUS/HAM for a week.
Brymon Airways began the Summer LGW service with SD330 G-BGNB leased from Celtic Airways, but both G-BIYH /BHHU have appeared recently,as well as Gill Air G-BIOE.BMA continue to base 1 ATP and a DC9-10 here, sometimes changed to a series 30.At weekends the 733 and 734 are seen to Jersey.
Birmingham European have taken delivery of its 5th ex BA 1-11 G-AVGP but has yet to enter service.3 G1`s are in service but only G-BMOW is in full new colours. They are used for 3 flights BHX-NCL-FRA-NCL-BHX,BHX-GLA-BHX and BHX-ABZ-BHX.1 Jetstream is still in operation,G-WMCC with the other 2 stored in the hangar and for sale.G-WMCC is only used as required and for ferry flights.BEA 1-11`s have been active recently on World Cup charters to Italy and to Jersey and the Med.Jersey European have a F27 based for flights to BHD and JER with a HS748 on the odd occasion.
Britannia have a 733 based all week and between 2 and 4 737 also based.A 767 arrives from EMA on Tues for 3 days Med flights, then does 2 MCO flights before going to MAN on Sun.G-BLKC was based for 5 weeks.Air 200o use 733 G-KKUH every Tues f/t PMI.
Air Europe has a 734 based all week.TEA(UK) has it`s single 737 based since early April and is joined on Tue/Wed by an EMA base 733.Monarch have 757 G-DRJC in operation since early May.Dan Air returned to BHX in June with 727-100 G-BCDA,replacing the TZ 727`s N285/286AT.This plane however had numerous technical problems in June/July resulting in a 727-200 flying in from LGW or MAN.A 1-11-500 visits Mon and Fri from BVA and Treviso on Fri.Caledonian use a 757 f/t MAH on Fri and Inter European have a Mon flight to LCA using 733 VH-TAX leased from Australian Airlines.Air UK use a 146-300 on Sat and Manx an ATP/SD360 to IOM.
Onto scheduled services and EI used new Futura 734 EC-402 to Dublin 13/6 and BMA DC-9 G-ELDG on the next 2 days.Ryanair 1-11 EI-BVG was used 19/6 and EC-402 gain 19/20/6.New 734 EI-BXD arrived 3/6.NLM continued to use Busy Bee F-27`s.With DLT FK50`s OY-MMU/MMV are still in use on the nightstopping service.Iberia used DC-9 EC-BPH in place of Viva Air on 3/4/6.
Turning to the IT flights and American Transair started to New York,Nationair to Toronto and Oasis and Worldways had extra flights.Adria continued their DC-9/MD80 flights 3 times a week,Aviogenex 737/727 4 weekly,Oasis MD80 2 weekly with Air 2000 757 G-OOOH 15/6 and new MD83 EC-479 several times.RAM 737 weekly OO-SDC 3,10,17/6 CN-RMN 24/6.Air Columbus 1 weekly with 727 CS-TKA.JAT 3 weekly DC-9/733.Air Malta 6 weekly 737/727 with leased 727 OB-1303 from Faucett Peru on 25/6.(This plane crashed into the Atlantic off Newfoundland killing 18 crew on 9/11/90 after running out of fuel on it`s return flight at the end of the lease).

Such a diverse array of types and carriers, the good days when I missed the bus home and had to walk back to Bordesley Green near St. Andrews. Compared to current times, aircraft observation was a pleasure, always a chance of something to miss the bus for. I recall waiting a field, the SGB scaffolding site, for Alitalia A300, the frost forming, hands going red holding on to the camera, getting dark and shivering as the bus pulled away, dedication getting the better of me.

This is an addition to my post about Derby Airways in the Eurowings tread.
I remembered I had a book on BMA by B G Cramp and it gives details of Derby Airways. I was wrong, they did operate from BHX to Ostend, Jersey and Cork. I am not sure where else they flew as Derby Airways before becoming BMA.
They also operated from Wolverhampton to Jersey via BHX for customs clearance.

I had the feeling they might have operated from Birmingham to Newcastle orJersey. I can distinctly recall one flight taxying onto the apron and parking outside the cafeteria in the old Elmdon terminal, Bhx members of a certain vintage will know where I mean!

I'd probably wagged of school not for the first time

I think Derby airways also Operated summer Saturday afternoon to Sandown in Isle of Wight ..... with its grass runway !
Very different times ....

The Elmdon terminal Cafe was my place of refuge from those mind freezing Religion classes at my school and the kiosk where I bought my postcards of airliners and Flight International. Was asked once by a Police officer why I was there and not at school,........so I told him why and he understood.

The 1999 final between Mallorca of Spain an Lazio of Italy was played at Villa Park and brought in a crowd of 33,000.This day was the busiest at BHX for passengers and ATM`s up till then

Would have loved to have seen the two Courtline one elevens diversions from Luton. Assuming they must have been due to fog. I can remember fog being much more common back then but seems a bit early in the year even by 1970 standards?

This was way before my time, but I do feel that aviation was a lot more varied and interesting back then, with lots of 747s and narrow bodies that weren’t A320s and 737s. I now regularly watch BHX, MAN and LHR clips from the 1990s and it’s amazing how things were in aviation.

It was always worth the effort back then. 1-11s, DC9s, 707/720s and the big days of CPAIR and Wardair turning up with their heavies, not quite knowing if it was a jumbo or a Douglas trijet.

Now we have websites telling us in advance and we choose to stay at home in comfort rather than go observe a string of Ryanair Boeings. In recent times we had the A380 to attract attention but nothing much else. I shall always be interested but the airframe builders have gotten boring with their output.

I think you've hit the nail on the head there, Jenny! I remember well the anticipation, enhanced by the smell of aviation fuel when arriving at the airport. The first thing we did, was run to look at the arrivals board hoping for something unusual. That was the only info we had - no FR24 back then. Diversions especially from LHR were heaven!
I remember arriving at school in Aldridge one morning and a CPAir DC-8 (great colour scheme!) coming over so low. Everyone in the playground stopped and looked up and I even heard a few expletives.

Great days!

Kevin

Much the same as us then. We would get a view of the eastern side of the airport when the bus drove up Bickenhill lane to the NEC but it was very unusual anything out of the ordinary was there.
Straight off the bus to look at the arrivals board above the information desk which was normally followed by groans of disappointment but if it was Autumn or winter time there was still hope of seeing something special if the fog came down which it did regularly or we had some snow.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
