Friday’s were always a great day in the late 80’s & early 90’s
I remember we had a pair of Spantax Dc8-61early evenings.
On the subject of the Friday Tristar … I remember Peach air ?

Thanks Simon. I really love the memories these reports bring. Many of the registrations are etched in my mind forever!. It also highlights how many diversions there were back in those days. A spotter's delight and so many tuned in to our airband radios in those days waiting for a rare goodie to drop in.
I often used to go to bed with the radio tuned to Birmingham approach in the hope I'd get woken by something interesting. Mostly I'd wake up having heard nothing!

I used to do the same thing. I often fell asleep and would get woken with the fright of my life, as the radio suddenly blared into action. I also remember that there used to be a a late flight (around midnight - papers or something like that), which had the callsign 'Woodair'. The first couple of times I heard it, had me thinking 'what on earth are Wardair doing flying into BHX at this time of night'.

Great to see you here again, Wolfheze!

I checked your avatar recently and it said you hadn't been here in quite a while. Hope everything is OK, and please keep visiting.

Kevin
Hi. Yes everything is okay. Just been preoccupied with trying to work in the pandemic and moving house. Nice to see the same people are still here

BHX Summer I.T. Airlines survey 1970-2019 Part1 1970-1995

Hi all, inspired by this years increase in Turkish charter airline flights I got thinking as to which was the best time in the past for variety of Airlines during the Summer season at BHX,it always seemed that there was more variety of aircraft types and colour schemes in the "good old days".So with the help of my Airstrip magazines from 1970 to 1998,LAAS magazines from 1999 to 2019,and also using the "Logs to Blogs" pages and Gordon`s BHX Photo Blog I set about compiling a year by year list of overseas and based Summer I.T charter carriers from May to October each year.I have included any overseas Airline that operated for at least one month during each year, but excluded any one off sub-charters.I have also excluded some Airlines such as Air Berlin,Hapag Lloyd,Hamburg that operated semi-scheduled flights to Germany.I have grouped them by geographic region as follows-Eastern Europe/USSR//Spain//Portugal//Malta//Cyprus//Turkey//Greece//North Africa//Other European countries//Canada/USA//China.Part 1 covers 1970 to 1990,Part 2 1991-2019 and Part 3 stats for the busiest year, most years operated by Airline and by country.I hope you find it interesting and welcome any comments and corrections,I certainly had forgotten a lot of the short lived carriers that came and went.

18 Airlines 1990,1994,2001,2005
19 Airlines 1989
Best year 21 Airlines 2002

Having plotted these on a graph it shows the 1970`s were very low, slowly inceasing every year to a peak of 19 in 1989,then dropping sharply due to the civil war in Yogosalvia, increasing again to 17 in 1994,then from the mid 1990`s to 2011 large inceases and decreases probably due to countries like Greece/Turkey/North Africa becoming more popular, and the fact that Airlines came and went very often. From 2011 there is a steady decline with the exception of 2015 due to the rise of the UK Airlines resulting in the very low numbers of the last few years.

Thanks, Simon you've obviously put a lot of work into those tables. There are many airlines that I remember well. One standout memory I have was from when I was around 14. I was thinking of Air Traffic Control as a future career and managed to arrange a visit the the BHX control tower. I went along with my Dad (I'm pretty sure it was a Sunday) and whilst in the tower, I was amazed to see a JAT B727 land, followed immediately by a JAT B707. I never did get to be a Controller.

Kevin

Thanks Kevin, that was my ambition too but my lack of skills in maths put paid to that.Settled for a Travel Agents job in the end which enabled me to travel to a few far away places !.Regards,Simon.

Simon, I have a lot of the Airport Timetables UK books from 1984 onwards, if you need any help with the foreign UK IT flights, I have the 1985, 1986, 1988, &1989 in excel format if you want a copy? I also have a spreadsheet of the summer IT flights from 1985 up to present day if you find it useful! Send me a message if you want a copy?

Hi Matt, thanks for the offer, yes I would be very interested to see all of those if you could email them, love seeing the old schedules and logs.Regards,Simon.

BHX LOG/INFO May 1982,

Passenger figures for May 1982 were down 0.9% a drop of 1279 to 148,789,not a bad figure as night closures led to many flights going to EMA and Coventry.

I.T. Flights,

Started with a vengence in May with the highlight being a Balkan TU134 which started the service,tech-stopping in Bratislava. The normal TU154 took over 2 weeks later when loads picked up.CP Air commenced DC10 services to Toronto on 9/5,but were upstaged by Wardair who used 747 C-GXRA on 19/20.5 instead of the usual DC10.

First visits from UK Charter Airlines were Monarch 737 G-DGDP 14/5 CFU-GRO,BY 737 G-BJCV 15/5 F/T PMI.Aer Lingus 737 EI-BDY 27/5 F/T DUB and Loganair Twin Otter G-BGPC appeared on Metropolitan`s Dan-Air service the same day.Problems with 1-11`s lead BA to use Trident 3`s on 20/5 G-AWZP CDG and AMS,and G-AWZK 28/5 DUB and AMS.
Having covered BA`s last Viscount service through BHX last month, they went and spoilt it in a nice way by using G-AOYM for a charter f/t GLA on 6/5.Dan-Air won the most charters in a month award with 727 G-BCDA starting the ball rolling talking Aston Villa to play a friendly against the Moroccan national team in Rabat on 2/5,postioning from LGW and returning on 3/5 ferrying to NCL.G-BAJW then flew a split charter LGW-ABZ-LGW on 10/5.A 1-11-400 was next,G-AXCP 18/5 LGW-Cognac and return, with a -500 on 20/5 positioning from LGW to operate to Oslo, with G-AWWX working the return 24/5,going back to LGW.Finally on 25/5 HS748 G-BHCJ was f/t NCL.
Aston Villa`s Rotterdam European Cup victory again brought a number of charters.Taking supporters out on 26/5 were Transavia 737 PH-TVH f/t AMS,Martinair DC9 PH-MAO f/t AMS,KLM DC9 PH-DNY f/t AMS,BMA 707 G-BFLE to RTM,and BAF Viscounts G-AOYH SEN-RTM,G-AOYI and G-AOYP both CWL-RTM.The BMA returned to EMA,joining G-BFLD which operated from there,as did KLM DC8-63 with the team due to reduced runway length at BHX.All 3 BAF`S returned to Coventry after the game,but on 27/5 Transavia 737 PH-TVH and KLM DC9`s PH-DNN,PH-DNY were all f/t AMS.
PH-DNY was operating for Martinair.Martinair also subchartered Transavia 737 PH-TVI on 25/5 for an NEC flight.Others for the same exhibition were TAT F-27J F-GBRU F/T LBG for Uni-AIr,E.A.T. Metro OO-JPK F/T RTM n/s on 26/27.5,delta FH-227 OO-DTE 27/5 F/T BRU,and WDL F-27 D-BAKA 27/5 DUS-SEN.
Finally Italian Air Force DC9 MM62013 flew f/t Ciampino late on 19/5 to collect a Kidney that had been affected by an Italian ATC strike.

BHX LOG/INFO May 1992,

Passenger figures for the month were 374,010 up 17.6% on 1991.

Scheduled flights,
Air France`s BHX services settled to a 737-500 in the morning, but continued to be a series 200/500 mix for the other 2 services. There were several cancellations in late May due to a continuing pilots dispute over the original A320 crash in a forest in 1990.Dan-Air 727 G-BNNI was used on both evening services on 27,28/5.Lufthansa started a daily service to the new Munich airport from 17/5 using a 737-200.The Sunday evening Frankfurt flight continues to provide the odd A320.3/5 D-AIQD.Stuttgart is still served by Dash 8 D-BELT,BEYT,BEAT.KLM Cityhopper used an Air Holland 737-300 PH-OZA on 27/5 (ex BA G-BOZA).Swissair continue to use a mix of CTA MD87 and Swissair MD80`s.Aer Lingus are increasingly using SAAB 340`s again,EI-CFA on 28/5 for an extra DUB and EI-CFB on 25/5 in place of a F50.
British Airways Regional came into being on 1/4/92 but there is a staff dispute to be sorted out satisfactorily. There is a second vote on industrial action by cabin crew. The good news is that BHX will be the admin HQ of the new Airline rather than MAN.The BAC 1-11 replacement is now confirmed as being 737-200`s from BA LHR as more 737-400`s are delivered. Our first is expected in mid-October.Meanwhile we have a MAN 1-11 permanently stationed here as a backup to the ex BCAL fleet.May saw 3 different ones ,G-AVMH/N/W at various times.

INFO BHX Summer 1992 UK Based Airlines Part 1 BA/BA Regional

British Airways, have a fleet of 13 1-11-500`s attatched to BHX,allowing one spare and one on overhaul at either BHX or LHR.Overnight the fleet is dispersed, with 2 at GLA,one each at EDI,FRA and ZRH,with the rest normally at BHX.A look at the Summer programme from BHX shows how destinations have increased and frequency improved :-
Aberdeen....Twice daily Mon-Fri by ATP
Barcelona ...Daily except Thurs
Berlin...........Daily except Weds
Brussels......Twice daily Mon-Fri,plus one each Sat/Sun
Cologne.......Daily Mo-Fri
Dusseldorf...Thrice daily Mon-Fri,plus 2 each on Sat/Sun
Edinburgh....Six daily Mon-Fri,plus 2 on Sat and 4 on Sun
Faro.............One each on Sat/Sun
Frankfurt......Thrice daily Mon-Fri,plus 1 on Sat,and 2 on Sun
Glasgow.......Five daily Mon-Fri,plus 2 on Sat,3 on Sun
Hamburg......Once daily Mon-Fri
Hannover.....Once daily Mon-Fri by ATP
Malaga.........Once daily Thur/Sat/Sun
Munich ........Daily service
Nice.............Once daily Thur/Sat/Sun
Paris CDG...Six daily Mon-Fri,plus 2 on Sat,3 on Sun
Zurich..........Daily except Sat.n/s
All flights are 1-11 operated except ABZ and HAJ by ATP.There has been an increased frequency to Paris and the 2 Scottish cities this Summer, aswell as increases to Nice and Malaga, compared to last Summer.Berlin now has a Saturday service, and Barcelona goes up to 6 a week to take account of the withdrawl of Iberia from BHX last Winter.
There are also some I.T. flights again. On Saturdays a 1-11 does BHX-JER-BHX,and whilst at Jersey operates JER-SOU-JER before returning to BHX.Tha same aircraft is normally then used to operate BHX-PMI-BHX,leaving at 15.15,getting back at 21.15.Meanwhile the nighstopping ATP from ABZ is used on several Jersey flights, leaving BHX at 09.05,returning at 17.50.In the intervening period it does JER-BOH-JER,then to/from SOU,and the back to BHX.On Sundays the same ATP is used on BHX-JER-BHX,with JER-SOU-JER in between.
In 1992,mainly since late March,a MAN based 1-11 has been regularly based here as backup to the BHX fleet. This may be due to increasing maintenance on the aged 1-11 fleet needing an extra aircraft being available,or it may be the start of the gradual transfer of redundant 1-11`s to BHX to see out their final days,as MAN is to begin receiving it`s 737-200`s from LHR this month. At the moment our visiting 1-11 is restricted to out/back services from here, with no through flights to GLA or EDI.It normally resides on the 70`s stands during the day.

BA Regional was originally set up to operate from 1/4/92,incorporating the services from the bases at MAN,BHX and GLA.BA at LHR had decided to separate it`s provincial ops from the main business, mainly for economic reasons,as,for instance, the BHX operation was losing £4.6 million in 1991/92.A package of cost savings valued at £8.25m was implemented this year, and already break-even targets are in sight. There has however been one obstacle for BA Regional in that pay cuts were a major part of the plan.
BA pilots were able to minimise the effect on them by remaining as LHR staff, whilst groundstaff reluctantly had to accept the new pay cuts. The third group of staff, the cabin crew, represented by BASSA,their union, took a much harder line. They ballotted their members and declared an intention to strike in mid-April.BA quickly took out a court injunction on the grounds that the ballot terms were misleading.BASSA had to re-ballot its members again, and we hear it was again in favour, with a reduced majority.A one day strike is planned for late July or early August to show it`s opposition to the new pay and conditions.
BA Regional cabin staff have had a 15% cut in pay, made up of 4% cut in basic pay, cuts in variable pay, loss of a year`s increment, loss of a week`s Christmas Holiday bonus, and a reduced profit share.Pending the strike staff have taken out writs on BA Regional on the grounds of loss of pay since 1/4/92.
A one day strike was chosen, but at the last minute talks took place and it was called off. However, the cabin staff did not get an improved offer, and so two short term strikes were called at short notice. The 1st took place on 7/8 from 00.00 to 08.30,and the second on 11/8 between 15.30 and 21.00.As a consequence all outbounds were cancelled, passengers being carried by other airlines or coached to LHR,with two BAF 1-11-200`s and a Ryanair 1-11-500 being brought in on the second date.
During July BA Regional were having equipment problems.A MAN based 1-11 is still loaned to BHX,but in addition Ryanair and BAF 1-11`s were in use on BA services. On 29/7 BAF had 2 1-11`s and a BAE 146 flying for BA at BHX.G-AZPZ was engineless at LHR,awaiting attention,G-AXLL was u/s after striking the airbridge on stand 13,and a 3rd 1-11 was out of service with a serious hydraulic leak.During August a pair of MAN based 1-11`s were based as Regional were so short of aircraft. Also BAF 146 G-BTIA was used on BHX-MUC-BHX for 2 weeks,on all days operating BHX-GLA-BHX before and after the MUC flights.By late August this 146 had been replaced by BAE`s demonstrator 146-300 G-BRAB in an all-white scheme, flown by BAF crews.
Meanwhile,in early July,BA Regional did announce more details about the financial problems of the old setup.Rod Hoare, the new MD of Regional, said that if the new company had not been given BA Heathrow approval, then BA was likely to cut it`s BHX operations drastically, leaving only 4 profitable routes.BA Regional claims it is returning to profit fairly quickly, and will be starting the replacement of it`s 1-11`s in December, with the first of 13 737-200`s from LHR,displaced by new 737-400`s.The company will have 3 divisions,at BHX/MAN and GLA,each base`s aircraft will carry the cities title after the BA logo. There will be 13 737-200`s at BHX,10 at MAN,and 13 ATP`s at GLA.Half of the BA Regional staff of 1,000 will be based at the Eurohub.
Around mid September BA Regional reached a settlement with its cabin staff over the new Terms and Conditions of Service following transfer from BA to Regional.Briefly they had been offered a better one-off payment as compensation for loss of earnings in the new company.Thet were ballotted again and accepted the offer.Quickly it was then announced that BA Regional would start daily transatlantic schedules from 28/3 /93 from BHX.They will be using 767-300`s with 4 services going direct, and 3 via GLA.Flights will depart at 11.00,returning at 06.45.New York Newark was initially chosen as it had a larger range of onward connections, but was changed to JFK later due to ongoing construction work at Newark and availability of slots at JFK.Manchester also gained a 5 weekly 767 service to LAX.
BA Regional will take over all the Transatlantic services from BHX/MAN/GLA from BA,and were allocated 3 767-300`s G-BNWN,BNWO and BNWU,all configured for Business and World Traveller/Economy only with no First Class seats.
G-BNWU operated the first BHX-JFK service on 28/3/93.

Heads Up!

For some weird reason, my days off work tend to involve being out of my flat by 5am and not getting back until 10pm. Back to work and the regular "fix" of 7.40am to 7.15pm hours
Heatwave Mk2 next week?
Some explosive weather build-ups currently in the North of England. What is it like where you are?
LBA: B737-300 G-GDFK empty down to Paris at 16:15 to operate the return LS268 back to Leeds 20:00 ETA where it will then operate the delayed LS265 to Malaga 20:40ETD
LBA: Albastar B737-800 EC-MUB positioning in tommorow afternoon from Gatwick 15:45 to operate a charter to Lourdes/Tarbes on Friday afternoon 14:00 AP7721 STC
I don't believe I am quite covering enough roles at work. Its now 4 on a bad day, 5 on a good day and there is scope for a 6th and 7th role. Still on minimum pay but had the biggest payrise in the company,
