Probably be a knock on the door of Vincent Hodder by an Irish bloke saying they’re doing a road resurfacing nearby and they’ve got enough tarmac left over to resurface the runway at a great price. All work guaranteed!

Just read an article in the T&A online and it mentions the massive diversion, I thought why not make one side of the tunnel 2 way......it was raised later in the article. Honestly some people just like making over complex diversions for the sake of it!

The road was designed the way it is to allow for one side to close for maintenance. It will be the kids club running the T&A trying to make up a story to serve as click-bait.

I don't know what they are actually doing, but there is no need for a diversion of any kind is what I meant. I suspect it is the T&A kindergarten who have got the wrong end of the stick.

According to someone I know, who lives adjacent to the runway end on Cemetery Road, Yeadon, ALL traffic heating from the airport (White House Lane) towards Yeadon and Rawdon last night was diverted off the A658, around the runway, down Cemetery Road, and up Yeadon High Street to the junction with the A658/Bayton Lane. She says the works are not due to complete until Sunday.

According to this the other carriageway is too narrow for a contraflow. Still Im unsure why traffic lights couldnt be used instead.

How utterly ridiculous if that is true. The road was built to allow for one side of the carriageway / tunnel to be closed for whatever reason. It is even written in the old LBA Handbook if anyone has a copy handy.

Some more weird reporting in this, suggesting the divert to Rawdon is via Pool Bank New Road and Otley Road which is plainly in the opposite direction. The actual divert to Rawdon, is surely via Cemetery Road and Yeadon High Street to Murgatroyds then back on to the A658.

Well it is true as reported above. LCC say the road is too narrow for two way traffic separated by cones. Perhaps since the tunnel was built the requirements have been amended in terms of required width, given that just about all vehicles are now wider than in the early 80s, especially HGVs.
Yes, traffic light controls could have been used instead although they would have had to be 3 way and there would need to be measures to avoid queuing across the airport roundabout .
As you point out though, Cemetery Road and even High Street are not exactly wide and both are littered with parked cars. Far from ideal and it seems that once again the Council have picked the cheapest option. Certainly not the safest option though.

A few years ago they replaced the lighting at the contraflow worked perfectly fine then.

There is a long crossover section at each end therefore they are OK for two way working, but there may be need for a temporary lower. speed limit as from my experience of inspecting the lighting on that section, traffic does travel a bit quick through the tunnels - even at 4am on a Sunday morning!

They're probably converting the old cycle lane into a duelled pathway and the main road into a duelled cycle lane if what they're doing everywhere else is anything to go by. This shower need voting out at the next local elections. Leeds needs to get moving and it isn't going to do that using a pushbike.

Whoever is in charge of road planning for Leeds city Clowncil needs there P45, total shambles all over

I think it left to the contractor these days, and I also I believe that most of of the highway supervisor posts have been done away with.

Couldn't agree more. "Climate emergency" or not, we still need to maintain a working economy where we can get around our city easily. Getting from the M1 to North West Leeds is a complete joke right now and it's getting worse by the year. The main bottleneck close to the airport, the A6120 that could have been easily duelled is now becoming a new cycle lane. #LeedsCityClowncil is literally cutting off North West Leeds from the rest of the city and the motorway network.

I think you mean the A6120. It is an open cheque book to leave these matters to a contractor. Plenty of show and equipment and big diversions to make it look like a big job
