I totally agree. These can't be odd ball destinations like Lille.

However, there are plenty of other European destinations such as Lisbon, Madrid, Munich, Copenhagen, Paris to name a few that get the balance. Business, tourists and onward connections.

I remember when Sabena started with the Xingu on the Brussels flight and we progressed to RJ's by the end.

I understand Manchester offers lots of options but as some of the members on here say they don't want to go to Manchester. I have a brother and sister who have utilised most of the Jet 2 routes for sunshine and culture but lets have a better offering.

I find it hard to believe that with the 3rd largest conurbation area in the UK we cannot get Cityline, Hop, Cimber to run these routes.

I'm a firm believer in that if you provide a service locally people will use it. It's just they don't have an option at the moment.

I am just staggered the local chamber of commerce can't try and push for more routes. You land at Manchester after 5pm today and good look getting to Leeds by 9pm!! My brother in law visits from Basle and he always has issues with getting out of the airport and the M62!!

So with the developing security situation in Turkey, and the latest US Embassy warning of "credible threats" in tourist areas, how many flights do we stand to lose in the event that this flares up?

You land at Manchester after 5pm today and good look getting to Leeds by 9pm!!

Allowing 1 hour to get through security and customs and get to the railway station. Trains to Leeds at:
6.00pm (change at Piccadilly) arrive 7.15pm
6.03pm (change at Piccadilly) arrive 7.37pm
6.35pm (non-stop) arrive 7.46pm
6.40pm (change at Piccadilly) arrive 8.09pm
7.00pm (change at Piccadilly) arrive 8.17pm
7.20pm (non-stop) arrive 8.31pm

Not too bad? That is if you are not wedded to your car and frankly, even though I don't drive, at the moment it's not worth driving in/around Greater Manchester with all the roadworks going on


For long-haul routes, I think the reasoning is that it would render 1 profitable route catering for the north of England into 2 unprofitable routes. I recollect that at one time AA said something like 40% of their MAN passenger came from Yorkshire. For the European routes, it's a case of getting the right airline with the right sized aircraft - i don't think you'll get 2 or 3 daily 100+seaters to some destinations... maybe 1 150 to 180 seater. Which airlines have the 40 to 75 seaters that could offer the frequency for business travellers?

My example was for car use rather than rail but your point is valid. However, many would opt for car use to their destination so whilst rail is still king is not everybody's preferred travel!!

I understand your point re AA although my post related to European routes rather than long haul. Most national airlines have smaller aircraft in their fleet to operate successfully from LBIA.

What Security issue! To be honest with you I don't think it will flair up in Turkey, I just think it's the press making an issue out of knothing on a slow news day to scrce and remind people to be vilagent where ever you are.
As we already know the terrorists don't give a dam about life and can strike anywhere, even in our own backyard!

Also do you on realise how big of an Armed Forces Turkey has? I wouldn't want to mess with them...

Don't think I don't agree with you Lbaspotter because I do. Terrorism can happen anywhere, especially these days but I don't share your optimism so far as the potential for losing flights. Look at what happened with Tunisia. It didn't take much for the entire programme to be withdrawn. Anyway to repeat my original question as it was only a question. How many flights do we stand to lose IF flights to Turkey are stopped?

If I have to travel from Manchester I always look to use the train first as although there can be delays it is generally more 'secure' than driving which can be a nightmare. However, train is not a viable option for a departure before 09.30/10.00am for me and if I do use Manchester I can be landing around 10.30pm on one of the German routes and there is no train to get me back home the same evening. Having said that, the car journey home is usually fine at that time of night but getting there - even very early morning can be another matter. Manchester is a last resort for me in terms of European short haul - not because of any issue with the airport itself - OK - I waited nearly an hour for luggage and took 2 hours to get out of the airport on the last occassion but that's how it goes sometimes - it is the uncertainty of getting there on time however early one sets off. I'm sure there is merit in what David_itl is saying which in a way agrees with my point that airlines probably will be reluctant to set up services from LBA which 'compete' with Manchester and will draw some passengers away, but whilst passengers continue to travel accross the Pennines, they are sitting pretty.

Hi Scott,

The Multiflight cafe is a good location to get to by public transport and other locations are fairly easy to walk to from there. If you don't know the area too well the easiest way to get to the cemetery road location is probably through the airport tunnel and left past Hawthorn Farm pub. Following the road until the junction and left at the end. Past the end of the runway and you'll see cars parked up. Obviously if you need the toilet you'd need to go back to the pub or the multiflight cafe. If the weather isn't all that good the multi cafe is best.

LBA marketing department have missed the opportunity for publicity as Doncaster/FlyBe have a car going around the Tour De Yorkshire routes as part of the entourage (many of which encroaches LBA's North Yorkshire territory.)

They even got a photo op with the French Secretary of State for Sports.

All companies have a limited PR budget.
I would frankly let Doncaster spent their money on this event and then see the results, to me as an ex very keen cyclist and racer in my day, I am not sure any mileage in this event.
There has to be a lot better ocassions I would have thought that LBA could use their budget, especially with the current weather people wont be waiting around 90 minutes before the off for the advertising procession. Jet2 and LBA did a lot of work with the tour de France,.
Have to say will be great to see Lizzie Armitstead a local girl in the rainbow strips of the reigning world champion and to see Asda sponsoring the ladies event.

It would have been nice to see LBA get involved with the Tour De Yorkshire but I think they already have their "fingers in too many pies" with all the various football clubs etc. I know the Tour De France was extremely expensive to pay for sponsorship and understandably so, but I also understand the Tour De Yorkshire is equally expensive. Maybe it's something the airport might try in a few years when sponsorship of the various football clubs ends?

It's a hypothetical viewpoint to be honest because unless they can see into the future there's no way anyone can tell if building the new road will lead to greater success of the South Yorkshire airport. #peelairports #DSAairport #DoncasterFARRS

From my point of view it's the first time I've actually thought of DSA as a threat. I know it's a very biased article and some of the facts mentioned are slightly exaggerated but if they do continue to get new routes, and have the space and wider area for growth that LBA doesn't necessarily have, it should be something LBA should look at.

This AeroPark is something that caught my eye.. where's this come from? Aero Centre Yorkshire is a new one on me..

I forgot to mention this from the weekend just gone, but did anyone happen to watch Middlesborough Vs Brighton Championship football match for the promotion to the Premier League?

Leeds Bradford Airport were advertising around the electronic boards which surround the pitch. There was a lot of hype surrounding it as promotion for one of the clubs, whoever one the match got automatic promotion, was worth £170million to the Premier League. Sky Sports reported it was one of the highest watched matches for the Championship season too!

Interesting they've decided to sponsor a football team up that way! I know, in association with Monarch they now have an agreement with Yorkshire CCC and Monarch did sponsor at Leeds United before!

Wonder whether it's part of their wider catchment attachment trying to lure more people into the airport! It only said "Fly LeedsBradford (R) Airport". As far as I recall it didn't specify routes.
