Hello Everyone

I am new here but have been reading the forum for a few years now. I really enjoy reading the posts on here particularly the movements and heads up thread.

Recently i have been becoming increasingly geeky about flying and related topics. What interests me most is airport development, runway extension and getting some big craft landing at LBA.

I have been bugging my colleagues at work about LBA and flights as i use FR24 a lot. they have been getting more interested also and as we work directly under the flight path on the ring rd by mcdonalds this has intensified things and we have a few questions to ask.

Firstly some of us are concerned by the high rate of RAF flights coming into LBA recently there have been 3 tornados this week alone. Does anyone know why this has increased of late?

Secondly is there anyway to know when to expect a RAF flight inbound? FR24 doesnt show military but do any others? we have a great viewing area under the flight path on our 4th floor it would be awesome to see if we knew in advance.

Thirdly will the runway ever expand? id love to see LBA command more international flights, long haul. But are we too high to warrant lots of commercial planes with the high winds we get? would too many be diverted for it to be worth it for LBA?

Thanks and great to finally say hey.

Keir

Just booked a day return from Heathrow – Newcastle next month as have a meeting in the North East, but decided to take the last flight home so I can have a good look around the airport.

Be interesting to see how it compares with Leeds from a regional airport perspective and should give a good indication how far behind our airport lags in terms of facilities.

I’ll post a trip report after the event.

Hi Keir welcome to Forums4airports and thank you for joining us at long last after lurking for so long!

I'll answer the points that I am able to.

"some of us are concerned by the high rate of RAF flights coming into LBA recently there have been 3 tornados this week alone."

This is nothing to be concerned about at all, the RAF aircraft are training flights.

"Secondly is there anyway to know when to expect a RAF flight inbound?"

Unfortunately I can't answer that question. There maybe somebody on here who can.

"Thirdly will the runway ever expand?"

Bridgepoint who own and operate the airport currently have no plans to extend the runway. This doesn't mean flights to places further afield won't ever take place. There are an increasing number of aircraft that are capable of operating flights further afield from relatively short runways. The new Boeing 787 "Dreamliner" and the airbus A350 are capable of operating a number of medium haul and long haul routes from LBA unrestricted.

Hi Keir
Re your question on the RAF aircraft flying into LBA dont know how much it has changed but many years ago the military aircraft station operations would book a fly by or roller (if the aircraft was to touch and go) at the start of the day, a second way would be whilst the aircraft was on a training exercise the aircraft would call up the airfield or sometimes ask the military radar unit who were controlling them at the time to ask the civil airfield for permisson. The tower would get the request anything from 10 mins to several hours before but it would not appear on the departure/arrival board. This proccedure used to happen several times a month

Yet again the local press have swallowed press releases from MAN as good news for Leeds. Both the YP and it's free offspring (Wharfedale Express) have lead articles about how a direct link to China from Manchester is good news for Leeds students and business. Hang on - LBA has 7 interlining flights (at least) with AMS and LHR which offer EXCELLENT onward links to China. I live in "Greater Leeds" and can be at LBA within 20 minutes. MAN is 2 hours away. Could the LBA PR folks please respond to this and put out the REALITY of travel times & CONVENIENCE to Leeds residents or do we just lie down and whisper "foul" quietly!

Hi, just wondering if there's a Summer timetable with alpha numeric callsigns anywhere on the net as spotting can be quite confusing without one. Kind Regards

Would that have affected EXS443 LBA to Heraklion due to depart at 14:00 left at 17:55? It didnt even fly over France!

The aircraft operated to and from Palma this morning which did overfly France and returned to LBA 3 hours late; hence delay to Heraklion most likely a knock-on effect.

Something different, beats the generic asking on the plane like nobody's ever done it before!

The pax figures for May are on the CAA website. Superficial look would appear to indicate a modest performance.

I was wondering could dreamliners be seen at lba when more are made and flying? They are a 2 engine plane so could they be the longhaul solution?

It is of course at the mercy of airline and tour operators but toth the Boeing 787 dreamliner and the shorter variants of the A350 can operate a small number of long haul destinations direct from LBA.

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
