I don't think we need flights to Australia. There's no such thing as a non stop flight from the UK anyway, as they all have to stop and refuel. Qatar and Emirates through Doha and Dubai must be giving plenty of connections to Australia.

We need to fix Las Vegas & Orlando first in my opinion, beef up the Canada offering, and maybe something like Bangkok, Hong Kong & Johannesburg too.

I was thinking exactly the same thing. With Emirates, Qatar and even Air India, BHX does have flights not only to several Australian cities but also many Asian and Far East destinations.

It seems Norwegian have gone very quiet again. I was expecting a press release very soon but nothing has materialised. Hope it's not been another false alarm.

Things are happening we just need patience :)

We need the rest of winter on sale first.

And a few new European routes like Oslo. It would appear very strange if all of a sudden Norweigan give us 2/3 new long haul routes yet no European expansion ??? Very strange indeed.

JET2 or Norweigan Base FOR s17

As the rumours of either still havent gone away, i was thinking about this and in my opinion this is going to depend on who blinks first. Will it be Jet2 or Norweigan ???

I dont feel that BHX is big enough to have both and if e do get confirmation of one of the above airlines announcing a new base, we wont see the other one.

So who would you prefer, if BHX can only have one of the above, which one would it be ???

Mine would definately be Norweigan just becouse they are well known across the continent and offer so many more opportunities. Im not going to rubbish Jet2 however becouse they could bring growth to BHX, but if we could only have one airline, it would be Norweigan.

I think I would agree.
A number of posters have highlighted the lack of capacity on routes to Florida, and Norwegian could fill some of that easily.
Also NAX would increase our links to other US cities, again what we have been crying out for.
Jet2 would not do that, however they would increase capacity to popular sun and city destinations.I am not sure though that is what we need as a priority.
Unless new cities or tourist destinations are on the agenda,I think Jet2 could prove to be more of a nuisance to other carriers, but not necessarily to the benefit of BHX as a whole.
I don't want to sound alarmist, but we need to be careful what we wish for.
Where do you draw the line between healthy competition and overkill!!

That's like asking to decide between my children

I can see positives in both. Jet2 have a good reputation, they would most likely grow quickly and cover some much needed destinations (Pisa etc) and they have the Jet2 Holidays brand behind them bringing big numbers.

Norwegian are known across Europe, could open up more to Scandinavia, would also have the potential to open up unserved destinations and of course could bring long haul.

Lets have them both (y)

Jet2 are also mulling long haul.

They already have the EWR Christmas flights, but, seems to be growing rumours that the A330 could be doing winter long haul also. It's a situation to watch.

But you cant have both in this scenario ?? You must decide, :playful:

I don't see it as a matter of having one of the choice but rather having both. Jet2 bring growth on typical trunk routes to the bucket and spade will bring in city routes that are either underserved or have one airline on bringing in healthy competition (eg Rome with monarch).

Norwegian bring in different competition. They solely target the seat only market. They would open up new routes to uniquer (is that a word? :/ ) destinations, open up Scandinavia, but like you've all said more importantly bring those 787's opening up long haul.

I don't see it as a negative either; Norwegians direct competition is Ryanair and to an extent jet2, monarch and on routes flybe. Jet2 primary competitor is thomas cook, Thomson and monarch ... And to an extent Norwegian and Ryanair. Personally if I was put in that position, as BHX airport, I'd choose not to have either as if I couldn't have both I wouldn't want one. I'd entice the exisiting carriers to grow. Both bring different packages, benefits and most importantly different customers.

Im sorry but i totally disagree with your comment about if you couldnt have both, you wouldnt have either of them. If BHX managed to get just one of those 2 airlines to BHX, it would bring the expansion that the airport needs to repeat the success that 2016 will be. This would keep passenger numbers rising like they have recently.

BHX still might get both, my question was just for a bit of evening fun to see what people think. I know nothing.

Signs of a healthy debate is disagreement (y)

Evening fun; like I said I don't want one I want both. But if I really had to choose jet2. Seem loyal to the airport and the investmentment they put in. Norwegian could quite easily pull the 787 to somewhere more profitable and use foreign bases.

It is indeed mate and i thank you for your contribution. :)

Jet2 would indeed bring a very popular British Brand to the airport. Lets see what happens over the coming months.

An interesting article from Business Traveller interviewing Alex Cruz, the new CEO of BA. BHX was not mentioned but you can see the relevance.....

Would BA consider flying long-haul from Manchester?

“I’ll give you the same answer I have given my staff, and the answer is “not yet.” We are serving Manchester. We have an inherent interest in the city of Manchester because we have a pretty large call centre there and we have a fairly large number of Executive Club members from the Manchester area who are coming to Heathrow to fly to a number of places, so while I wouldn’t rule it out, at this particular time there are no plans to do so at the moment.

We will continue to monitor what opportunities surface, however. UK carriers’ Manchester propositions are mostly leisure from Manchester - Las Vegas, Florida, etc. Otherwise Manchester is being connected by non-British carriers coming in from the US or the Gulf. So how would BA fit in with that when BA is not strictly a leisure carrier? I don’t know. It’s not entirely out of the radar but it’s not in the immediate radar.”

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
