The Government should champion investment in regional infrastructure to support economic growth and help eradicate the north-south divide, according to a new report published today. The 32-page report, ‘Investing in the Future’ by the economic consultancy, Metro Dynamics, concludes that the Government should work more closely with regional and city leaders to ensure that economic ambitions of all regions of England are reflected in national priorities. So I returned on Thursday (15th) from once again a lovely week away in Gran Canaria using BHX for the second time, and once again it was a very enjoyable visit We departed Cardiff at around 03:30 and arrived at BHX shortly after 05:30, We paid the £2 to drop off outside the terminal and it was a very quick and efficient process, We approached the TUI bag drop area, which was very quiet , A friendly greeting arrived and we were asked if we had used the self service bag drop before, indeed we had so we proceeded to scan the boarding pass and place the bags on the scale to weigh and print...

I recently booked a package holiday to USA. There was one long haul flight (UK to USA) then one connecting internal flight in USA - this was bought as one journey rather than 2 separate ones. Both flights were with the same airline (US based). On the way home the first (internal US) flight was cancelled (bad weather elsewhere in US meant the plane never made it on time to the airport). We were booked on the next available flight - the same one 24 hours later - free of charge. As a result we incurred various extra costs such as accommodation and food etc. Normally I believe if the...

The airport received a ‘gold’ award for a scheme which began as a trial in 2017, ‘recycling’ non-perishable food, drink and toiletry items which had to be surrendered by passengers due to hand luggage security restrictions by giving them to local foodbanks across Uttlesford, Essex and East Hertfordshire. Now a permanent initiative, it has contributed to supporting more than 3,000 local families to date and is run entirely by...

The future of Domestic UK air travel

What is the future for UK domestic air travel ? We are not a big country and yet getting around by any form of transportation can prove taxing to say the least ! Our roads are clogged ( don't even mention pot-holes ! ) . Train travel , in my opinion its worse since BR days , more expensive , more packed with shorter trains. It's ok to and from the capital in general for most big towns and cities, but cross country, that's very different, with still scant investment, outside London and SE for getting around. And what of domestic air routes, over the years these seemed to have diminished...

Newquay coup as Scandinavian Airlines announce flights

Well, I bet few people saw that coming. That's certainly a coup for the airport. According to another website the CPH-NQY route begins on 28 June. There are no details of frequency or duration of the service. In the past SAS has operated short season summer routes from Stockholm to Bristol from the end of June to mid-August. I wonder if SAS sees this primarily as a route for Danish tourists to visit Cornwall along the lines of the Eurowings routes from Dusseldorf, Berlin and Stuttgart.

Wildlife at airports

As I'm interested in wildlife as well as aviation, I'm often looking out of aircraft windows when taxing to see what creatures might be about. Recently when I was watching aircraft at LPL doing the Kiev flights, I was aware how many birds were around me in the grass around the taxiway and shrubland surrounding. I saw Kestrels Blackcaps, Swallows and Whitethroat , but most exciting was quite a number Grey Partridge, a once common farmland bird which is now on the countries "red list" being in severe decline. They seem to have a little safe haven around Liverpool Airport, which was great to...

What is the smallest airport you have flown from? For me it was the Bristol and Gloucestershire Gliding Club at Nympsfield in the Cotswolds above the Severn Vale near Stroud in Gloucestershire. My first and so far only glider trip was in a Schleicher KA-13 which was towed into the air and the pilot, who was brave enough to let me 'have a go' for few minutes, kept us circling, riding the thermals for nearly an hour. More recently I was taken up in a Tiger Moth from what is perhaps pretentiously called Torquay Airport in Victoria, Australia. It's a grass strip but the company running it...
