I was trolling through some old Photobucket pictures and found these which gave me an idea for a new thread. The nostalgia threads in the airport forums work well so I thought maybe it's worth a go here too.

This is known as Granary Wharfe and it was taken at Leeds City Station back in about 2007 just after the worldwide recession kicked in.

Of course, nostalgia can go back many many years but I'd say between around 2000 and 2007 probably saw the largest boom in Leeds since the second world war. Since then we've seen many visions but so far nothing has really come to fruition.

This was the last ever railway service from Yeadon, Leeds back in 1964. Credit to the photographer.

Hard to believe that picture was taken just ten year before I was born. Yeadon is of course the location of Leeds Bradford Airport which is now seeking a rail link. The madness of the railway closures of the 60's.

Mrs TLY and I were married the year after that but we were both barely out of our teens - that's true actually. 53 years and looking at 60 as the next target but you never know what's along the road.

The romance of steam is often mentioned although drivers of steam engines weren't always so enamoured - dirty, draughty, often uncomfortable places to have your office. I used to know very well a chap who as a 15 year-old started as an engine cleaner on the old Somerset and Dorset Railway in WW2 (known as the Slow and Dirty or the Serene and Delightful depending on your point of view). He finished up driving high speed trains on the main lines into Paddington.

When he was driving or firing on the S and D he told me all sorts of tales including how uncomfortable driving a steam locomotive could be. Outside Bath is the Combe Down Tunnel (now part of a cycle path) which is over a mile long on a steep gradient. It had no air vents. It was often the case that when they had a heavy goods train the footplate crew would finish up lying on the floor in order to breath as the locomotive exhaust beating against the low tunnel roof would be forced into the cab as the train climbed the hill.

On one occasion in the 1920s the crew of a goods train passed out because of the breathing difficulties and the train burst from the northern portal of the Combe Down Tunnel which was near the summit of that part of the line and increased speed rapidly and uncontrolled on the steep bank down into Bath. The train was derailed at the bottom of the hill killing both train crew and another railway employee who had been near the lineside.

I still love seeing, smelling and riding behind steam locos though.

Here's a bit of Leeds Nostalgia...one of many photos I have of 'proper' Leeds buses from the years when I was growing up.

This attractively styled bus, TNW 744, fleet no 744, is a 58 seat AEC Regent III, and was built in Leeds by Charles H Roe of Crossgates, and just like me, it entered service in July 1954. It was withdrawn in 1970. Based at Headingley Garage for almost all of its working life it operated mainly on the 9, 30, 33, 36 and 56 routes (Ring Road, Ireland Wood, Cookridge, Tinshill and North Lane respectively).

The photo is taken in August 1963 and the bus is 'off route' and seen outside the then Odeon Cinema, about to turn from New Briggate (then two way) on to its regular route up The Headrow. This diversion was due to its regular terminus at Leeds Central Bus Station being closed for redevelopment at the time. Buses on the 30,33 and 36 routes terminated on Vicar Lane, opposite the then West Yorkshire Bus Station. They returned to their regular outbound route via Vicar Lane (northbound) and New Briggate.

If anyone is interested in old Leeds buses, I have loads of photos not taken by myself as I was too young to own a camera!IMG_20200429_113556577.jpg

A sign of how young you are!

@White Heather it's something @Bigman would be interested in but he doesn't seem to visit the forum these days. He probably likes buses and trains more than planes.

Hi, I was born and lived in B36 for a long time - Lindale Avenue, just around the corner from Hodge Hill Comp.
I just noticed your postcode on a post.

Do you still live in the area?

49 trips undertaken last year. First done this year which was to North Wales where surprisingly the only slippery surfaces were in Conwy with the castle and it's walls closed due to the ice.
