You are correct. It will be demolished but not immediately. They do need a new tower first and once demolished, the airport have plans for future developments on the site of the current terminal.I'm 100% certain I've read online within the planning application the existing terminal building will be totally demolished, as the site has been ear marked by the airport's owners for new future use. It wont be demolished straight after the change over seen as they'll have to wait until a replacement ATC Control Tower is in place.

The planning application does indeed clearly states that the current terminal will be demolished.
Just get the feeling that even if aircraft were completely silent and emission free the Labour MPs, the planning Councillors, GALBA and ER would still find reasons to oppose any airport planning application.
Yes, the're Nimbys.
Perhaps with a few BANANAs thrown in (Build Absolutely Nothing Anywhere Near Anyone)Most of the time they're NIMBYBOISEs - Not In My Back Yard But Ok In Someone Else's![]()
And just to make it worse, it looks like the Eastern leg of HS2 has been canned. They are not bothered about this side of the Pennines, they are only bothered about Manchester.

Claims HS2 Leeds leg will be scrapped 'simply not true', says Transport Minister
A government Minister says it is "simply untrue" to say the Eastern leg of HS2 going through Leeds and Yorkshire is to be scrapped.www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk
The eastern leg of HS2 between Leeds and Sheffield could be delivered under the NPR/HS3 proposals - hopefully they'll then link that up to the rest of HS2.
The image below shows HS2 as dark blue/grey and NPR/HS3 as purple:

As things stand it looks rather cluttered and could be laid out much better, so hopefully they'll deliver the western leg of HS2 and NPR/HS3, and redesign the eastern leg to make better use of NPR/HS3, i.e.
Stage 1: Build HS2 Phase 1
Stage 2: Build HS2 Phase 2 (western leg only)
Stage 3: Build NPR/HS3 (trains run from Leeds to London via Manchester - still quicker than today)
Stage 4: Fill in the gaps on the eastern side of the network
Shame that the East of England is being considered behind other areas but hopefully it won't be completely forgotten about.
See that Leeds City Council are pleading with the Government not to impose even stricter lockdown rules because of the detrimental economic effects yet at the same time seem willing not to back a project that will bring both short and long term prosperity to the city and beyond. Totally crazy, the lunatics are definitely in charge of the Planning Committee if they don’t pass the planning application.
