Finally, some genuinely pleasing news and something for the airport, enthusiasts and fellow passengers to enjoy.

I'm sure I’m not the only one who can't wait to see the new layout of the airport! :dance:

That is great news and very much as we were told at the last meeting and as I reported at that time. There are a few who doubted this would actually happen! I am going to have to book a holiday now for 2011 just so I can try out the new facilities whilst they are still in decent condition!

Do you mean 2012?. Just that is when the first stage is due for completion.

Some pre-internal refurbishment work is to start as early as August with some basement office work being carried out by the local construction firm Triton Construction. I think it will be another firm carrying out the main works when they start in November.

I'm pretty sure the airport authority will be releasing some artist impressions soon. Having now had a sneak preview of the artist impressions, I'm impressed with what looks like a 'meandering river' of shops and food & drink outlets. It should greatly improve the airports income from retail concessions. At the moment my only concern is despite the increase in the size of departures of around 65%, there's no indication of any additional seating areas.

Indeed - the new terminal layout will replicate that of Manchester, for example. I suspect there will be more seating areas too...

I agree Richard. I'm sure the LBA management will have been notified on numerous occassions about the seating difficulties the terminal currently has...

The airport have submitted a modification to the planning permission for the terminal development. It went in this week and has an expected decision date of 19 Aug.

It is described as

NON MATERIAL AMENDMENT TO 08/06944/FU: Reorganisation of the internal layout of the terminal building at ground and first floor levels, including an infill above Check In Hall A

Revised ground floor and first floor plans are available. The change to the ground floor plan is that a new staircase, escalator and lift are to be installed roughly where the current travelex store that is where the entrance to the queuing area for security is.

However this will only be accessible airside after passing through security. So, it looks like you will enter security as you do now but upon exiting security, you will be directed to these new stairs / escalator to get into the new first floor area. If you're still following this, then you'll work out this will put you in the new area above check-in hall A. The first floor plans show that the first floor will be the new duty free shop, 2 new retail shops, a new travelex, an ATM station and a new 'leisure lounge'.

The bits I can't work out are
- the existing food village / burger king area on the first floor looks like it remains but is behind the duty free shop and appears to be airside only. So if you imagine the first floor being in three sections and you were looking at it from the apron, then you have the food village on the left, the duty free in the middle and the new shops and seating above hall A, on the right.

- it is not clear what happens to the existing duty free shop / pub / cafe on the ground floor, but I assume some of this will be ripped out and replaced with seating and waiting areas. It seems to make sense to get rid of the existing duty free shop if a new one is being built upstairs and likewise, if they want better use out of the food village, making this the only eatery available and making passengers who want to use it pass through duty free to get there sounds

If the links work, here are the plans

Those plan's sound interesting LS16, unfortunatley the links do not work.

In the original plans, they were wanting the BurgerKing and Yate'sBar to become part of the airside facilities. My only concern is that there will only be the Cafe Ritazza landside that actually sells food, asuming that Superdrug move airside. :dunno:

I think the airport are really pushing, quite rightly, for people to go through security and relax there and spend money, as oppose to passengers spending money landside. It concerns me that some passengers do like to spend time landside before they travel and the only real opportunity for them to do so now, is the Cafe Ritazza in Check-In Hall B.

slightly surprised that there are only plans for two retail outlets, other than the duty free area.

Don't forget that there are retail outlets on the ground floor of the departure lounge area, and some of these might well be retained or modified. If they are taking out the existing duty free there may be enough space to put in the additional seating and still retain the existing bar and cafe areas that are on the ground floor of international departures.

I suspect ;) the following will happen.

Food village move into new build and re-brand into somthing a bit stronger. As it will no longer be a 'village' haha.
Danby bar get the old FV back area and that get's turned into proper kitchen for them.
Yatess' and BK move into airside areas.

I am REALLY hoping starbucks come into a unit.

The pdf file is too big to upload so for quick viewing...

Here's a screen capture of the pdf of the first floor plan courtesy of Leeds City Council. (Click the top left of the image to zoom in).

Light Blue = Duty Free
Dark Blue = Retail
Orange = Seating
Pink/Purple = "Leisure Lounge"
Yellow = Walkways "Circulation Zones"
Green = Steps/Escalators

xboy999, looking at the photos that LBA released to the press, it's looking like their will be a huge central area for seating as well as smaller retail area's. The images also depict the large 'World Duty Free' retail area, 'News and Books' retail store and the 'Food Court' which is down some stairs. The Word Duty Free and News and Books store will be central as well to the new extension. I think that the airport are having to introduce smaller retail areas to give smaller business' a 'go' at running within the airport, just like the recently closed down foot-wear store which was on the current top-floor of the terminal.

Just as I finished writing this I found this extract from a website:

[textarea]The proposed extension on the first floor will provide:
A new departure lounge with a central seating area benefitting from natural light created by a glazed roof area.
A selection of retail facilities will surround this central area providing a relaxed environment for passengers whilst waiting for their flight.
The new airside departure lounge will be linked to the existing first floor catering facilities which are presently under utilised.
A single exit to all departure gates will be located at the eastern end of the new departure lounge.[/textarea]

Sounds good, so far - will it all happen though??

The other floor plan you mention was for the new section of terminal which isn't part of the internal refurbishment. As far as I am aware the work that is to be carried out wasn't part of the original plan to extend the terminal. If and when the main work begins, it will inevertably require changes to the floor plan to work with the newly planned internal refurbishment.

I'm not sure whether these 'changes' are known to anyone - but by the looks of things, LBA are making slight alterations to the terminal extension.

It's good to see though that it is constantly on their mind, and that they are putting a lot of thought into it - we may even see it earlier than we are all expecting...

[textarea]LBIA submits new scheme to planners
Article Date: 04th August 2011

Plans involving a two-storey extension to Leeds Bradford Airport have been submitted to Leeds City Council.

The application contains an amendment to the original scheme which was approved in principle two years ago. Leeds Bradford Airport’s £28 million expansion plan aimed to create 2,000 jobs, and attract up to five million passengers a year by 2012.

Now an application has been submitted to provide a new entrance, improved internal facilities and associated landscaping works to the terminal building forecourt. The application includes an amendment over the reorganisation of the internal layout of the terminal building at ground and first floor levels.

When the scheme was approved in principle two years ago it had already been deferred at an earlier meeting amid concerns over its impact on local roads. Planning officers had worked to thrash out a new deal with the airport, which included a commitment of funding in stages as passenger numbers increased.

It does seem that the airport are making changes, which are probably 'Financially Driven' and I think the changes may have something to do with the 're-organisation' and so they don't have to alter the current refurbished terminal...

As it's still in the development phase I've decided to mention this here as opposed to in the retail thread.

I have learnt that the airport is considering brands such as Soho in the new development to be constructed through the winter.

If Soho is brought to LBA it will be run as a franchise by SSP. Also worth a mention is the Yates bar is to go. The location will be taken up by the new duty free under the branding of either World Duty Free or Alpha. As far as I am aware, World Duty Free also own the Alpha Retail brand.

So-ho coffee, will be replacing the food village or so I’ve been told. Danby bar is expected to become a full functioning restaurant with both the loss of Food Village & Yatess’. Food village back, will become the Danby Bar kitchen. Well that’s what I’ve been told.

Looking at the plans, it looks as if the mothballed cafe is to be reopend to replace the Yates's which seems to be going to be replaced by the new duty free shopping area.
