Not directly related to LBA but all part of the current 'battle' between aviation and its opponents, Southampton Airport's planning application for a 164-metre runway extension will be heard by its local authority planning councillors on 25 March. The airport says the extension is needed for the airport to remain a viable operation. Without it the airport's future is in doubt.

They just claim that aviation jobs are unsustainable. Unlike the power industry, clothing industry, cement industry, and various others, all of which generate considerably more CO2 than aviation, but which are apparently ok.

I have often wondered why it is that these groups focus so much on aviation when it's relatively small fry in the list if top CO2 emitters at 2% globally. I remain convinced that the roots of the likes of GALBA is in NIMBYism. It's so convenient now to hide under the banner of climate change but they do slip up regularly and start banging on about noise (not a climate issue) and night flights (not a climate issue - CO2 emissions are not picky about the time of day). I think these sort of comments demonstrate that GALBA are very much NIMBYs in disguise and have just joined forces with the environmental fanatics.

We all understand the climate issues even if we don't always agree whether it's entirely down to man or not (given this has happened before when man wasn't in any position to cause it), but there are ways to tackle it that that don't involve paralysing travel.
As I said in an earlier post, this is because aviation is of international importance and like a terrorist organisation, these groups can get media publicity for their cause easily. As we have seen countless times over the last twelve months, the aviation industry has featured heavily in the media, whether through the effects of Covid, or because of Bristol or Stansted airport expansion. When they compared the LBA terminal replacement with a coal mine in Cumbria, I had absolutely no knowledge of that whatsoever. Clearly a coal mine is way down the media pecking order for importance and somewhat different to an airport terminal replacement.

They can not like for like a coal mine with a airport.Coal is on the way out and i sure wont say airports are on the way out, even with many airports across the globe in a struggle to keep going.

Whilst airports are struggling at the moment, they have recovered from challenges previously. I'm fairly sure most of the industry professionals agrees with that. The pandemic has undoubtedly been the most challenging period ever faced by the aviation industry but flying and international travel is not something that's just going to go away. We trade internationally, and we like to visit new places around the world. Like all other industries, there is room for improvements to reduce emissions and that is going to be the way forward. Stopping flying is not an option.

Ominously that application has been called in by the Secretary of State for the stated reason of “increased” controversy and will now go to a Public Inquiry.
Green campaigners say the mine will increase carbon emissions and send the wrong signal in the run-up to a UK-hosted climate conference in October.
LBA beware, if the protesters kick up a big enough stink this is what can happen.

another big step forward for LBA and great that press releases have been issued. on wards and up wards

Based on them issuing a press release can we assume they are accepting the councils recomendation on the taxi situation, and no extra flights until the terminal is complete?

Odd isn't it? Nothing on BBC. Most unlike them with their Climate Change agenda. Perhaps it was considered academic having previously been approved in principle. Had it been rejected yesterday you can bet they would have been shouting it from the rooftops as a triumph for the climate change agenda.
BBC Look North had two stories about Sheffield - the most important place ever - on their lunchtime bulletin so there was no time for anything else.

In view of the current situation with airport applications and the climate change lobby they are no doubt being advised to take the permission and run!

Wharfedale Observer article

YEP now have a story about the council decision with no judgemental response.

Our totally useless MP, Alex Sobel , has written to Robert Jenrick MP, on his posh House of Commons paper, asking him to call in the decision.
This battle isn't over and we could still be fighting it in another 18 months due to people like this. I have no doubt the other 4 Leeds MPs will copy and paste on to their own letters too.
This is why it's important that as many of you as possible send a quick email to Jenrick via his Ministerial web address to counter the demands of the anti airport lobby.

I always believe I am a realist and as much as I am very happy about the current situation I do think we should perhaps take a step back, take a deep breath and relax. I really do share in your happiness and the future does look really promising but I have never been in favour of gloating at opponents wether in sport, life or business because it can have a bad habit of coming back to haunt you. If I am speaking out of turn please put me right and I will apologise unreservedly but I believe we are better than this current invective against protesters. Rise above it I say.

We have to consider which side of the political fence the naysayers are sitting. I do believe the majority of them support those sitting on the opposite side to the government benches in the Houses of Parliament. Within the Planning Panel the political divide wasn't as clear cut as some Labour members voted in favour of approval of the plans, where as others decided to vote against. The Liberal Democrats seemed to be against the airports plans. The Conservatives on the plans panel were largely in favour of the airports plans but the party's wider political view on aviation is less than clear. Locally the Conservatives are far from clear in my opinion. I can't wait for wannabe councillors to come knocking on my door this May.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
