The Eastleigh Planning Committee started this morning at 10am, and have just decided to continue the debate at 2340. It will now apparently continue after midnight, so 14 hours plus with no vote yet.
It seems Eastleigh are Lib Dem, so opposed to this but the recommendation is to approve. If they do approve it, then there will, no doubt, be calls for Robert Jenrick to call it in. Now won't that be interesting? It's hard to see how he can call in LBA and not SOU too. Will he want to commit to two public inquiries as it will pretty much signal that any airport expansion that gets approval will have to go through a public inquiry.

I hope SOU get their extension and neither that nor LBA are called in. However, a panel made up almost entirely of Lib Dems approving this against their policy is going to take some explaining to their voters.

A big few minutes ahead for the future of SOU.

Addendum: adjourned at 0005. Will continue tomorrow. Seems Leeds Council were actually pretty good!!

Not LBA but just to confirm ( in relation to previous posts ) that Eastleigh Council Plans Panel have just rejected Southampton Airports application for a runway extension. As a result it will now go to the full council on 8th April for a final decision.
Yet another anti aviation vote. We need to be thankful that Leeds City Council took a more balanced view. We have all had a go at the Council, but in the end they did the right thing. A rare event these days. Reading the comments of the chair if Eastleigh's panel, you could be forgiven for thinking that a 165m runway extension was going to turn SOU into LGW.
I feel really sorry for the supporters of the airport and the staff working there, but it's not over yet......

My bold and underlining sum up just how stupid this countries planning system is
True, though as Southampton Council objected to the application by their own airport, the outcome would probably have been the same.
Aviation is becoming a lost cause due to Council's being taken over by people who use Climate Change to block anything that is seen as difficult while they continue to approve other schemes which when looked at cumulatively, are probably more harmful than the airport.

a runway extension at southampton airport would be a good thing for residents as aircraft on takeoff would gain more height esp heading south by the time they reach the populated areas and perhaps with the turboprops require less power and noise. but the moaners dont think of these things!
I'm afraid that the moaners, wherever they are, don't think full stop. If it is aviation it must be bad. This climate lobby thing is an excuse for NIMBYs to object no matter what. It is sad really but who is going to rectify the problem?

Have they been filling the cracks up again or is this more permanent work that has been done?

I heard that news report at 09.00. It was balanced but no doubt the objectors are purposefully raising the profile of what the BBC called 'expansion' to get more letters sent. BBC did say the SofS would need to think carefully about what he does as there are another 8 airport expansion plans on the table and LBA will set a precedent.

Yes he can't call in LBA over a new terminal and then ignore other aviation schemes around the country . Bristol is different as it was rejected, not approved. The same may well happen with Southampton Airports runway extension.

On another note, just got home to find a Green Party flyer in my door and guess who their Weetwood Ward candidate is? Only the one, the only, Mr GALBA himself, Christopher Foren. God help us! His flyer, of course, has the GALBA poster pic showing hundreds of aircraft taking off and most of his blurb on it is anti airport.

I serve notice now that if he wins this ward, I am leaving. His flyer is now in many bits where it belongs, in the trash.

I assume now the BBC have stated LBA is effectively a test case, there will be a national response by the environmentalist lobby. If they can nip LBA in the bud then they will have basically stopped all other airport development too. Much more effective to group your resources in one big 'push' than to fight individual battles. I think we really need a national aviation policy. Who knows the SofS may defer his decision pending one being developed.

Hopefully Leeds City Council planners will have informed the Secretary of State with their submission the terminal replacement plans replace already approved plans allowing the same level of growth.
It's in the Planning Recommendations anyway as presented to the panel. I would assume that would form part of the submission from LCC to Jenrick.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
