Even the BBC seem to think so. Charlie Stayt pretty much just insinuated to Sajid Javid that removing Plan 5 is purely a political ploy. I do wonder if we are being a victim of bad timing.

I really hope you are correct about this Easy289 !
We all thought the process to build the new terminal was a done deal and were assured every legal challenge had been looked at with care.
but look were we are now.
I do not want this airport to be closed or down graded and I certainly do not want to have a massive housing or industrial estate behind our present home.
I have been telling my neighbour local residents that the land between our houses and the runway belonging to the airport is safe from being built upon whilst the airport is operational because our local Mp told me the council had an agreement with the Airport owners not to sell it or build on it due to its proximity to the main runway which is a safety and environmental issue.
Even the anti-airport locals living on our street could see the sense of assisting the airport to prosper and put up with the noise and pollution some of them say they suffer.
They point out that they have never had any meaningful contact with the airport management but often have anti-airport campaigners and local council officials knocking on the door.
Would seem to me that needs to be on the agenda to try getting people on side.
The meaningful contact point is valid in my opinion. I've said all along the airport have been backwards in coming forward. It would be in their own best interests to become more involved in local communities.

As per my previous comment, why on earth was a GALBA member interviewed on the news last night and not the CEO of the airport? just sitting quiet which they have done all along he should be making his points and shouting it from the roof tops? where is support from Visit Yorkshire? the Mayor? you can guarantee if this was MAN they would have support from local interests.

funny how STN is allowed to expand no problem.. LONDON.. a joke.. I hope we hear something from the airport ASAP on what they plan on doing going forward. i hope them diggers are in as we speak.

The last line suggests LBA are seemingly prepared to await the decision of the PI.

Vincent Hodder, CEO of Leeds Bradford Airport, said: “While we are disappointed to see this decision taken after 10 months of deliberation, we remain convinced in the economic, environmental and customer service cases for our replacement terminal. Our proposals are robust and we are committed to being an outstanding airport for passengers. We hope this decision does not signal a lost opportunity to level up the North of England. The plans not only comply with national and regional legislation, but also present a faster way for us to meet our Net Zero Strategy and a welcome boost for the UK tourism industry to bounce back from the Pandemic.

“Our aim with this development has always been to bring the flight operating procedures of LBA in line with other UK and European airports – which are nearly 30 years old -, overhaul surface access solutions and deliver a level of passenger experience the Leeds City Region is striving to achieve. Blocking these changes would limit all of this and the region’s ambitions to become a modern, vibrant European city, attractive to the rest of the world as a place to invest.”

“We look forward to hearing the final decision in due course.”

if what goes ahead? very outdated. i presume any airport in the UK are going to have a very very hard time expanding like LBA is seeing. DSA cant even sustain simple links to AMS. Wouldnt say it was much to worry about.

It sound ambitious and I hope DSA is successful and I like their plans for cargo. But I echo user Ap1995 comments that any UK airport will probably struggle to expand as green muppets, MPS, climate scientists Ect all seem to rule the country and get to decide what we can and can’t have.

Especially when it comes to aviation it seems to be the biggest target in climate change even though it only accounts for 2% of emissions. If LBA can’t expand and build a nice new environmentally friendly terminal then I doubt any other UK airport will get to do their plans without a fight.

World wide emissions are about only 0,04% of Co2. I was told a few weeks ago that the human body needs to breath some 60% carbon dioxide in, to live, along with 40% oxygen. Climate change is the the Worlds way of doing things, not ours.

odd charter to Cancun and Florida is not exactly the most fantastic selection, nonetheless at least the do have the services. a main line carrier offering long haul & connections would be more to brag about.

'Without a fight' is certainly true these days when any criticism of the environmental zealots is regarded as a form of heresy in the eyes of many of them.

It doesn't mean that airports can't win out though. Last year Stansted was successful with its planning appeal to raise its planning cap by eight million passengers a year, although in that case the ineptitude of the local authority played a major part. A new 'greener' local authority had been elected and overturned the previous approval of the application. When the airport appealed the local authority barely defended its later rejection decision to the extent that the planning inspectors made an order for it to pay the costs of the enquiry, estimated to be nearly £2 million of local tax payers' money.

The next airport planning matter to be decided is Bristol. That's been a long-running saga. In December 2018 the airport applied to have its planning cap raised together with associated infrastructure expansion. The local authority did not get around to determining the application until February 2020 when it was rejected (against the advice of its own planning officers).

In August 2020 the airport gave notice of appeal and the appeal procedure began in January 2021. The main part of the process - the public planning enquiry held by three planning inspectors - lasted from 20 July 2021 until 8 October 2021 and involved a total of 36 sitting days.

The Bristol appeal was and is widely regarded by the environmental lobby as something of a bellwether and a huge amount of effort and money was put into opposing it, with local opposition groups at the planning enquiry arguing alongside national organisations.

The previous secretary of state (Jenrick) had delegated the three planning inspectors to make the Bristol decision, and after he took office Gove made no move to 'recover' the appeal to make the decision himself.

At the end of the planning enquiry the Bristol appeal decision was expected to be announced early this year so is probably imminent. I wonder whether Gove already knows the planning inspectors' decision and that is why the LBA case was called in this week.

LBA's application is different to Bristol's in a number of respects; in particular Bristol is asking for an extension of its passenger cap with related infrastructure, whereas LBA (which I believe does not have an actual passenger planning cap) is seeking to build a brand new state-of-the-art, environmentally-friendly terminal building.

Whilst this saga has (sadly) a long way to run, can somebody with a Law Degree comment on the reported reaction by Alex Sobel to the appointment of Inspectors to decide this issue.
The YP says Sobel says "I'm opposed to the airport expanding from 4 million to 7 million. But I'm in favour ofthe airport having a new terminsal building that is net zero & 4 million passengers" LBA responded by saying 7 million was legally approved in 2019.

Can he really be serious? Can a local authority WITHDRAW planning permisson. Is my house safe from demolition?
It would be interesting to see what the Inspectors make of that stance and I hope to live to see the new terminal uop and running!

He wants his cake and eat it, a brand, spanking new, expensive green terminal without any corresponding increase in business for the airport. Business doesn’t work like that and in all likelihood he’s going to get an already approved far less green terminal with the increase in passengers he doesn’t want. How short-sighted can you be?

Clever though not to object to the airport as it is with a new super green terminal but stop its expansion with an old bigger terminal and keep the nimbys and locals happy who are hell bent on stopping the place growing. He is not on his own in opposing growth is he ?

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
