Personally, I think that given any public inquiry is likely to be 12 months away, and might take another 12 - 18 months to reach a decision (taking us to mid 2024), and then even if approved, and the terminal built, it won't be operational until 2026 at least, LBA can't wait that long. To do so would mean another 4 years of stagnation. They need the enhanced arrivals process now, not in 4 years.
There are issues they simply cannot fix without something being done.

It would not surprise me if they build the extension now ahead of the Inquiry. If the final decision is then that the new terminal can be built, the airport have another 3 years in which they could start it - possibly as late as 2027. And, if they actually start work on it in a meaningful way, that 3 years can be extended. Yes, it will cost them an extra £25m or so for an extension that will be short-lived, but the alternative risks stagnation and falling further behind competing airports.
And, if the worst happens and the new terminal is rejected, then they can at least still expand, and haven't wasted years doing nothing.

Building the extension makes sense now. At a fraction of the cost of the new terminal, it allows for the industry to recover and it gives the public enquiry time to reach a conclusion. If approved, S106 agreements linked to the new terminal will no longer stand. It might even be possible to use the terminal extension as a book end to the new terminal pier!

If they build the extension, it provides a significantly better arrivals experience, and will enable the airport to better handle larger aircraft types.

However, for the airport to get to 7m pax per year, it will be necessary for those areas of the existing terminal that are currently allocated to arrivals, to be fully reconfigured, to change them into airside departures. That will significantly increase the area available for seating etc. However, by the time they would be thinking of this, the outcome of the public inquiry may well be known. If the new terminal is approved, I doubt they would do it. If it's not approved, then really they have no choice but to do the reconfiguration if they want 7m pax per year. And, to avoid having to submit any planning application, they need to do the work without adding to the existing building or changing it on the outside. It needs to be entirely within the confines of what's there now.

If they want to then tart up the exterior to make it look better, the time to do that is later, when the growth is already assured, and the planning application can be demonstrated as having no impact in terms of growth ,,(ie: just cosmetic).

The airport needs to get on and build the extension, it will take too long for the public enquiry results to be announced.
They also need to get an "apron view" from the departure lounge, couldn't see a thing on Thursday. It would definitely enhance my experience of the airport. It would be nice if it could be done by April, nest time I use the airport.:happy:

Reported on the Bristol thread that, following a public inquiry, the airport has won its appeal against refusal of its planning application to expand from 10 to 12 million passengers per annum. The application was refused by the local planning authority against the recommendation of its planning officers. The appeal was determined by the Planning Inspectorate, the Secretary of State not wishing to intervene in the inspectors’ decision. Another airport expansion allowed on appeal.

Its ironic how Somerset council rejected BRS airport expansion and now that's been overturned, LCC approved LBA's and now been called in.. couldn't make it up. I unfortunately can see it getting rejected and I really hope I am wrong. would be great if we got an update from LBA regarding all this.

The inspectors will be fully aware of the outcome of previous inquiries and the reasons for approval - and that those reasons apply here too. More so, given the supposed levelling up agenda .They are going to have some damned good reasons to reject it or recommend rejection to Gove if he makes the final decision as it condemns LBA to the use of an archaic and unsuitable 57 year old terminal into the forseeable future.

Given planning inspectors have in both planning and appeal stages recommended expansions plans be approved at both Stansted and Bristol, I'd be interested to see on what grounds they would recommend against expansion at LBA.

I'm no expert on the matter, but I could only imagine some local issue or only relevant to the LBA proposal would make the planning inspectors recommend against the new terminal - i.e. matters like climate change or noise aren't enough as these issues are present at both STN and BRS and both were approved.

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
