I'll believe it when I see it AND they tell the world and its dog what is happening. Until then - dream on!

All will be revealed by the middle of next week

Just heard an interesting rumour, that due to recent profitable investments made by Bridgepoint, they are now looking at a few other investments into LBA including; a permanent covered walkway ie. a building rather than plastic on a few poles.

It will most likely run parallel to the current road that runs in-front of the majority of the stands on the main apron and it is to be build onto the current slope which runs into the rather dis-used car-park at the bottom of it. I have heard it will be a similar building to that at Liverpool, which runs beside the 'newer' apron area in-front of the Control Tower, presumably to house some sort of Baggage facilities as well.

In addition to this I have heard that in preparation for the Terminal Extension, road markings and the rather infuriating 'hill-like' pavements, which were once used, are to be removed, leaving a flat temporary pedestrianised floor outside the main terminal...

I don't know what will come about these rumours, but it's the second time I've heard about the walkway.... :dunno: It could just be the rumour running circles...

I've heard similar and to expand on that the apron from around stand 8 down to stand 19 is to be widened to facilitate the construction of the new walkway. In addition, the apron lighting also requires moving outwards to make way for the new walkway.

It's all in the planning stages at the moment but it's good to hear things are in the pipeline at least.

I can confirm that a covered walkway is definitely on the agenda, although we have always been told it will be in a future phase of work. LBA have been given a hard time at various meetings about not having such a walkway to aircraft and from the car park to the terminal, so they might bring it forward, but I would be surprised if they do. It will be a tough call getting the terminal done and completed by Easter 2012 without trying to build a covered walkway at the same time. If it wasn't included in the tender package, then it won't be happening this time because doing it as a contract variation means it would cost premium prices.

Contractors don't put up compounds for the love of doing it, so it is starting to look like it might really be about to happen now. Perhaps an announcement next week about the terminal AND the arrival of a PIA Boeing 777 on the 10th is on the cards??

Morgan Sindall I think rather than Sandhill.

They were the main contractor for the new Bristol Airport terminal and have just recently completed an extension to the North Terminal at Gatwick. They are doing the new tower at BHX too. Looks like they have quite a bit of pedigree

Yes my bad.

Morgan Sindall it is. The Food Village is set to close on the 14th December if anybody wants to pay a last visit before it closes to the general public for good without passing security.

The landside Food Village has been closed for about 2 years?

Haha no the Food Village also consists of the Burger King and Yates not just the cafe.

i wasn't too sure if it was public knowledge about the walkway, but I can confirm this is planned to happen. As the first phase of the terminal does not include an extension just a refurb, the operational performance of the airport needs to be improved as not THAT much additional space will be provided. As a result the stands (9-18) will be re-aligned a bit further back towards the taxiway, along with the road moving back. This will allow a double covered walkway down to stand 14. The current shambolic set up airside outside gate 3/4/5 will be re-designed to (in theory) allow flights on stands 9,10,11 & 12 to board simultaneously (currently not possible)

With the changes to the stands, there will be a change in policy of who uses airbridge stands - expect to see Ryanair use 10/11/12 more than stand 8 which they primarily use at the moment.

Its not exactly all under the Food Village name though is it, with the franchise being SSP for all the outlets.

@LBIA, the problem also comes primarily with the gates inside the terminal to board to specific stands, so would they not have to be altered to allow the stand changes to be of any effect. Ie, gate 7 being used as its most beneficial for holding passengers for the Ryanairs.

The ground floor is going to be gate queue areas in sections, so Ryanair can use more than just Gate 5 & 7 like they do now.

10am on Tuesday for the grand unveiling of the plans

I do hope you are right LS16 and I for one will welcome this move to perestroika. They must have engaged Mikhail Gorbachev as their new PR man!

I do hope that whatever they announce isn't a damp squib though. Only time will tell.

I've got the invitation to the event here with me now, so don't worry it's happening. It is described as a briefing to announce the airport's terminal investment plans. It starts at 10 for 45 mins and it then has time for photography.

The next consultative committee meeting is next Thursday and the MD's report includes a comment that planning is now commencing for the covered walkway alongside the apron, so it looks like its definitely going to happen, but as for when, we will have to wait and see.

My bets are on it being built along-side the work on the Terminal Extension, or not soon after.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
