Re: Infrastructure Developments

Is he concerned about competition as clearly the aim of expansion is to attract the likes of eayjet etc

Re: Infrastructure Developments

I am surprised at Phillip Meeson, but I suspect his comments are certainly showing his concerns that the expansion may signal the arrival of some significant competition for him at LBA in the form of another low costs airline. Ultimately they will also lose their Jet2 check in area too and they will have to be checked in with everyone else. Perhaps he likes the fact that his airline more or less have a check in hall to themselves apart from Thomson Airlines who are becoming increasingly scarce anyway.

I do find it extraordinary though that since his airline more than any other is responsible for the increased passenger numbers at LBA, he now starts complaining that the roads and public transport around the airport are not up to the proposed expansion. His claims are hardly likely to endear him to LBA management and could sour what had previously been a good relationship. Overall, I think what he has said (or what he is REPORTED to have said which could be completely different) is ill timed and ill advised to say the least. It is also strange that he has waited until the approval is given before saying anything.

Re: Infrastructure Developments

I think that most of the above comments regarding Mr Meeson are on the mark but i think he has deliberately waited until after the approval so as not to give the"antis" any ammunition.

Re: Infrastructure Developments

I do recall that he spoke out against the sale of LBA in the first place, so perhaps he is still sore at not having his previous cosy relationship with the old board at LBA and that he is now having to deal with a more commercially aware organisation. However, he is a shrewd businessman, so he must know that LBA, just like Jet2, is in business to make a profit. Anyway, what is WRONG with an airport having lots of shops??? I really don't see what he is complaining about.

Re: Infrastructure Developments

From working on BAA projects, the revenue raised from retail is extremely important and forms a large part of their business and profit. There's no reason why LBA shouldn't be in a similar situation on a smaller scale and rely more heavily on it's retail operations. As long as the investment spent doesn't run at a loss, then there shouldn't be any part of that cost passed on to any airline, and the passengers will get a much better experience all round. Looks like a win win situation to me, so not sure why Mr Meeson is complaining.

Re: Infrastructure Developments

Q. Whats wrong with an airport having lots of shops?

A. Cos his punters will spend less on his planes!

Re: Infrastructure Developments

[offtopic]I seem to remember being told that that was one of the problems with Gregg's. Not only were passengers not spending in other airport food outlets passengers were also taking Gregg's food onboard their flight to eat. My experience with this would suggest that those passengers will continue to do that by bringing their own sandwiches, many fed-up with rip-off prices of airport food.[/offtopic]

This development is unlikely to include further food outlets, but more other miscellaneous shops ie, clothes, electrical goods etc.

Re: Infrastructure Developments

To be honest, I think Jet 2 charge about the same for a butty as do SSP in the terminal.

Re: Infrastructure Developments

It seems rather obvious to me, but surely the airport should ensure that they don't fill the terminal with shops that will undermine the operation of their airlines by selling similar goods and so should concentrate on what you can't buy in-flight such as books, clothes, etc. However, I suppose that the more shops there are , the more likely passengers are to make themselves skint before they get on board and then cut back on in flight purchases. Somehow they have to work together to strike the right balance and ensure that both airport and airline make money. Commercial cooperation!!

Re: Infrastructure Developments

Correct.

I agree they need more of the so called "high street shops", but also eating outlets, such as McDonalds or Subway would be nice, just to have an alternative to what SSP offer in the airside food village or Cafe Ritazza upstairs in departures.

Re: Infrastructure Developments

T1 at Manchester is packed out with all sorts of shops, as I am sure are NCL, BFS and EDI. How does this impact on jet2 onboard sales from those airports I wonder???

Re: Infrastructure Developments

That's exactly the point Bigman, but if every other airport has a wide range of retail outlets why shouldn't Leeds? Passengers are more often than not disappointed when they ask what shops are available airside and you tell them "Duty Free, a WHSmiths and a Food Village". Shops enhance the passengers experience of airports as does the sweeping marble tiled floors seen at other airports, which again at Leeds, the plastic sheet style flooring that bubbles up does the airport no favours. Transforming the way the airport operates commercially will improve peoples entire perception of the airport making it look professional and recommendable. Mentioned before, the 3 million or so passengers from within the Leeds catchment area that don't even bother to look at Leeds Bradford as their main departure airport will start to use the airport in increasing numbers.

Re: Infrastructure Developments

So what other jobs are now in the pipeline? The fuel farm and covered walkway all went quiet some time ago.

Re: Infrastructure Developments

The fuel farm has been shelved for now - I don't think they will do that for a year or two now, and I suspect that if they do it will be linked to the proposed parallel taxiway, as both will be required if there is any significant increase in aircraft movements. The downturn and resultant reduction in movements has lessened the urgency for a new fuel farm.

The covered walkway is still going to be provided across the drop off/bus stand area, but it will be very much a stop/start affair as it cannot cross the roadways in either the drop off or bus areas. I think that it might form part of the terminal expansion project as there would be little point in doing it now, 'cos half what they put up, would be taken down again as the terminal is constructed. But they have confirmed they will not be installing a covered walkway from the long stay car parks and passengers will have to wait at the pick up points for the shuttle service.

Re: Infrastructure Developments

I think the covered walkway bigman was referring to was the one from stand 8 to stand 12. That was rather abruptly cancelled after the hoarding had already gone up for the project. As far as I am aware this is completely cancelled now, but I don't know the reason why.

Re: Infrastructure Developments

hi everyone

was just wondering when the airport plan to build the parrallel taxiway? i guess they would build it at the 32 end first? was it included in the recent planning approval?

thanks

Re: Infrastructure Developments

Soon i would hope, if any of the management thought as we do.

But i believe it may be a way off yet, the terminal is the next phase to be done, and work should be starting this winter season.

Re: Infrastructure Developments

The parallel taxi way is not part of the recent planning application and is not planned to happen until such time as aircraft movements reach a specified number per hour. Since the recession struck and movements have reduced, the need for it has diminished, although I am sure there are certain times of day when it would be very useful indeed, particularly between 0700 -0800. The first parallel taxiway to be built will be the one heading out towards the threshold of 32 (Horsforth end). Building one towards the Yeadon end will be problematic as it will require an extension of the existing road tunnel to allow the taxiway to cross the A658, plus a lot of land infill between the runway and the new Airport North business park area. That would only come later therefore.

Re: Infrastructure Developments

After today's news about Ryanair moving in, surely this will ensure the main extension works will be placed on more of a fast track programme rather than dragged out as a lot of developments seem to be at the moment. I was wondering if Bridgepoint may have been tempted to stall a bit on starting the works as passenger numbers have been declining slightly for some time, but this news should spur them into action.

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
