Yeah i've just done some quick sums and it should be around 40-45%.

Is the 130% trying to describe how much flybe have increased their own passenger numbers by as opposed to the airport as a whole?. (Sorry haven't read the whole article).
No not really as since 2015 that's 600% not 130%.

I'm glad we're all agreed that from whichever way you look the 130% increase quoted in the newspaper article makes no sense and bears no resemblance to either the gain in airport passenger numbers overall since June 2015 when Flybe opened its base or the gain in Flybe's own passenger numbers during the same period.

it's not the first time that Wales Online has picked numbers out of the air in articles about CWL. They regularly quote CWL's best year as handling 2.3 million passengers and on occasions have mentioned 2.7 million.

If we rely on the CAA, the best year was 2007 when 2,093,507 terminal passengers were handled. Even when adding the 17,641 transit passengers that year the total was only 2,111,148 - nowhere near 2.3 or 2.7 million.

Don't know where they got the 130% from, if they'd done a little bit of research then they would've discovered that the Flybe numbers had grown by 600% since 2015 and surely that would've sounded better.

Forgot to mention on Sunday that when I was watching the Wales v Italy game i noticed Flybe were advertising, i believe their Italian, routes from Cardiff Airport at the stadium on the touchline electronic advertising board's.

Flybe’s network makes it easier than ever for our customers to travel from the regional airport closest to where they live, saving valuable time, effort and money on non-essential travel to farther flung departure points.”

Maybe this is why BE are avoiding Spain, because there's something in the pipeline from another Operator.

I've just been looking at the route map and noticed these connections via CWL with wait times;
BHD-FCO TUE (1hr10 outbound & 3hr20 return connection in CWL)
BHD-VCE TUE (2hr15 outbound & 2hr25 return connection in CWL)
DUB-VCE TUE (1hr35 outbound & 3hr30 return connection in CWL)
EDI-VCE TUE (1hr10 outbound & 1hr5 return connection in CWL)
EDI-VRN SAT (3hr45 outbound / No return connection via CWL - SOU only)
BHD-MXP WED & MON (1hr10 outbound / No return - BHX/MAN only)
EDI-MXP MON (No outbound / Return 2hr55 return connection in CWL)
JER-MXP FRI (No outbound / Return 2hr35 return connection in CWL)
BHD-FAO WED & THU (1hr10 outbound & 3hr15 return connection in CWL)
DUB-FAO WED (1hr10 outbound & 3hr10 return connection in CWL)
EDI-FAO SUN TUE THU (various different connection times in CWL)
EDI-TXL THU (3hr55 outbound / No return connection to UK)

So not exactly ground-breaking connections that will turn CWL into Schipol, but certainly something that could boost the figures on these routes. No doubt there's competitive direct options from EDI and DUB, with alternatives probably available from BFS. I'm not sure if this is something new given the current timetable/frequencies, but I've said before this could work for CWL if the timings are right. The routes BE operate from CWL aren't all operated frequently from other BE bases, if at all. It does put CWL in a mini league of connections, which could be grown further. It will never be the hub of MAN, BHX and SOU because of the volume of domestic flights they see, but certainly a positive!

I know some of the flight times has changed to accommodate this.

Tue FCO was 10:05 - now 11:20
Tue VCE was 11:10 - now 11:30
Wed FAO was 10:05 - now 10:45

These are obviously to allow for connections, and I know that someone used the BHD-CWL-FAO today so fingers crossed it proves successful, and it allows BE to look at this option more seriously in the future.

Every little helps i suppose! I wonder if they want to look at turning CWL into a mini leisure hub.

Didn't they do that or try to do it at Southampton? I wonder how it worked out.

Flybe flights to Venice take off marking start of Flybe summer season
Flybe, Europe’s largest regional airline, started operating its extensive 2018 Summer schedule from Cardiff Airport at the weekend (Sunday 25th March) featuring 17 routes with a total choice of up to 75 flights a week.

The start of the Summer season has taken off with the launch of the first ever service between Cardiff and Venice; the inaugural flight took off from Cardiff today (Tuesday 27th March).

To mark the occasion, Cardiff Airport surprised passengers with a celebration at the Departure Gate, featuring popular Welsh artist Nathan Wyburn, who created a stunning Venetian mask live in the terminal.

On arrival in Venice, Paul Willoughby, Flybe Regional Sales Manager presented friends at Venice Airport with a commemorative gift made out of traditional Welsh slate to celebrate the inaugural returning flight.

Venice is the airline’s fourth Italian route from Cardiff offering conveniently scheduled twice weekly flights on Tuesdays and Saturdays particularly timed to suit the needs of those embarking on a Mediterranean cruise.

Roy Kinnear, Flybe’s Chief Commercial Officer, comments: “We are delighted to include yet another new route to Italy from our Cardiff base this summer and look forward to welcoming many new passengers on board. We are passionate about connecting people and communities and offering the widest choice of destinations possible with time saving, punctual and affordable travel.”

Deb Barber, Chief Executive Officer of Cardiff Airport, adds: “It’s been a hugely exciting day with a great buzz in the terminal. The start of Flybe’s new Venice route is a welcome addition to their ever expanding choice of destinations available from Cardiff and to see a busy first flight out is testament to this. What a great way to mark the start of Flybe’s third summer season at Wales’ national airport!”

Flybe’s franchise partners Eastern Airways and Blue Islands have also started operating their new summer schedules with a further four routes. Details of full schedule now available for booking at www.flybe.com.

Flybe also has codeshare agreements with many long haul airlines to provide both business and leisure customers with seamless onward connections available between Cardiff and the rest of the world. This wealth of extra travel options can be booked direct with the relevant international carrier or travel agent. Examples are to Dublin and onwards with Aer Lingus, Paris with Air France and Finnair, Edinburgh and Munich with Etihad, Glasgow with Virgin Atlantic and via Milan with Alitalia.

No before the departure at CWL they had an artist called Nathan Wyburn doing Venice themed art.
So was there anything yesterday in addition to the start of the Venice route, either in connection with it or something else?

For some weird reason, my days off work tend to involve being out of my flat by 5am and not getting back until 10pm. Back to work and the regular "fix" of 7.40am to 7.15pm hours
