Back in the late 1970's early 1980's there was a proposal for a new Severnside airport . The proposed airport would have been built in the area around Severn Tunnel junction with the main runway built out over the estuary. It would have been served by rail and the M4. The idea was that it would have replaced both Bristol and Cardiff airports. Shame it wasn't built as it would have been a major success. I dont know why it did not proceed but I suspect that local pride on both sides of the estuary put paid to it as both airports at that time were council owned.

Wasn't there also a proposal to replace Cardiff with a new airport on the Llanwern steelworks site? Or was that the same project?

The only problem I see with waiting until 3 million passengers a year is that I believe it could take a very long time for that to happen. It would require either a lot of airlines operating to the airport like Newcastle has or 1/2 airlines having a massive commitment to the airport like Leeds has with Jet2 and Ryanair. Although the terminal is functional I do think CWL needs a new terminal in the next 10 years at least.
I wasn't suggesting they wait until 3 mppa arrives. When I said in 'in sharp focus' I meant clear evidence that such a number was a realistic proposition rather than an aspiration.

If CWL is to make significant progress in the coming years it must be hoped, and expected, that it will be handling 3 mppa before the end of the next decade. If it isn't at least there or thereabouts it will have been a disappointing ten years. Currently there are a number of external factors over which the airport has no control that could either speed up or slow down that rate of growth.

In the UK government's White Paper of 2003 The Future of Air Transport the idea of a Severnside airport was not supported by the government. A similar proposal for a new airport at Pilning, north of Bristol, also failed to win UK government support in the same White Paper.

I take it you will become involved, Jerry. You'll have a lot to input after regular trips using the airport and your interest in the subject generally.

It would be something I'd like to do but I doubt I'd be able to attend as it's on a Wednesday when I'm working.

I can't see what time the session on Wednesday begins. If it's in the afternoon it might preclude people who are at work from attending.

Are any of you other CWL regular posters thinking of becoming involved?

I did fill in the form anyway and it does say only 15 people will be involved on a first applied first in basis.

Focus group in my personal opinion is a total waste of time and effort

Cardiff Airport has failed to re-schedule the cancelled at short notice ACC meeting.

They have however published on their website a behind closed doors session at 2pm on the 31st July which is the same day as this focus group.

Without any amended dates there will be 8months between the previous ACC and the next one available to be attended by the public.

Unless there is a good reason for having a closed meeeting (perhaps confidential matters are to be discussed) the airport will have to be careful it's not running contrary to DfT Guidelines for ACCs.

The Government expects all aerodromes to communicate openly and effectively with their local communities and users of the airport about the impact of their operations. Airport Consultative Committees (ACCs) are a well-established way in which airports can engage with key stakeholders in the local area and beyond.

I don't see what confidental matters they would discuss. The way they put out the tweet it's a feedback forum from anyone who has flown from Cardiff in the last 12 months.
Actually the only thing I can think of is if it's say to do with a design for a new terminal so includes a digital presentation and a model.
I can't see anything else in that they would bring a focus group in for that would be needed to kept secret.

Surely if matters are to be discussed confidentially then this will be aside from any ACC meetings.

My suggestion that confidential matters might be the the reason was simply a 'for instance' which is why I prefaced the comment with 'perhaps'. I can't think of any other reason why they would have a closed meeting which would appear to be against DfT Guidelines that state that 'aerodromes' (airports) should communicate 'openly' with their local communities with ACCs a well-established way in which to fulfil the obligation.

Homeless World Cup teams touch down in Cardiff

Cardiff Airport is preparing to welcome 18 teams to Wales, who are arriving from countries around the world ahead of the Homeless World Cup, which takes place in the capital city between 27th July and 3rd August.
International teams and groups of volunteers from countries as far as Australia, South Korea, Mexico and Chile will connect at key hubs and arrive into Cardiff on scheduled flights over the next few days.
Deb Bowen Rees, CEO of Cardiff Airport, said: “This event is going to be so exciting for Wales, and we’re delighted that many of the teams are able to benefit from the connectivity offered by our airlines, particularly KLM and Qatar Airways.
“Cardiff is a proud sporting city, having hosted major events in the past like the Champions League Final 2017.
“This event is a real opportunity for Cardiff to play its part and support the excellent work delivered by the Homeless World Cup Foundation, and at Cardiff Airport our team are very much looking forward to extending a warm, Welsh welcome to our international visitors when they touch down in Wales.”

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!
If anyone would like to share their local airport news right here in our news area let me know so I can give you the correct permissions to do so. It only takes a couple of minutes to upload a news story with an accompanying image. The news items can then be shared on the site homepage by you. #TakePart #Forums4airports Bring the news to one place!
survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
