Manchester Airport can congratulate itself with joining the some worlds best airports for road traffic chaos. By under funding the layout of the internal roads around the terminal buildings along with the under funding of every other aspect apart from surface car-parks, they have now a world class diabolical infrastructure. This evening at around 8.00pm. you couldn't get anywhere near Terminal 3 or the Multi-story car park, without waiting for 15 - 20 minutes. It was so bad that it was affecting Terminal 1 as well, as cars were queuing down the Dual carriageway road towards the M56 slip road, reaching almost to that joke of a roundabout close to the M.A. Arches !
Have you tried to extricate yourself from the Jet 2 drop off point back onto the Dual carriageway again, another accident waiting to happen there. It's got to the stage now that most of the drivers could be charged with dangerous driving, as you just have to pull out in front of folk otherwise you would never move.
The development taking place now is ten years too late and poor old visionary, George Harvey must be turning in his grave at the state the current incumbents of his chair have let it fall into. I can think of only one place worse in the UK for its derisory road system and that is Luton.
I could go on, but I will desist, suffice to say a friend of mine who works at the airport told me that it now takes him regularly 40 mins on the staff bus to get to the New Staff East car park, - just what you want at the end of a 12 hour shift!

Welcome to @Arthur Pint !

Hopefully the traffic issues you describe will be resolved by the improvements to T2 (which will take traffic away from T1/3).

As for the parking, there is clearly a vast amount of surface parking around the site which I expect to be developed piecemeal. Hopefully that will include better staff parking but I don't think this will be high up MANs priorities (I'm sorry to say).

The lib dems will never win this election anyway, the media are making damn sure tressame will win this election.

Further to this, Theresa May's (she's a Conservative BTW!) manifesto contains a pledge to expand LHR, in addition to HS2 and NPR (HS3).

Did the manifesto mention how much public money would be used re LHR?
I suspect not.

I'm politically homeless but I would imagine Labour would have been heavily scrutinised re balancing the books had they proposed same.

Heathrow it seems is "off limits" for criticism or any form of scutiny Why ?

I do wish they would stop ramming Hs2 down our necks as if this is some panacea to placate The North!

We want investment NOW not in some mythical project 3 generations away !

My mood is however lightened by 1.30$ to the £. Hopefully that will help US flights.

Great stuff. And memo to self / all: this particular Europa League match is scheduled for the WEDNESDAY, in contrast to the accustomed Thursday night ties which we see in all preceding rounds.

Notes applicable to flights returning to MAN early hours Thursday.
1) Remember to allow for extra-time / penalties in your calculations if these are required to settle the final.
2) It is customary for fans of the losing side to be sent home first as this reduces the risk of aggro with the police.
3) If the match were to be decided on penalties and MUFC emerged as winners, this would raise the possibility of first-wave flights landing after sunrise. Bonus for photographers.
4) Weather forecast for Tue and Wed suggests dry / cloudy westerly (23) operations at MAN on those days. But 05 is expected to kick-in early Thursday based on current projections. However, these forecasts are constantly updated so keep an eye out for changes as the key period approaches. A higher chance of sunshine is forecast for Thursday.

Let's hope they do choose Airport City, the project needs a good anchor tenant.

Would also be closer to their Radbrook park site, and good transport links. Fingers crossed.

MAN have started building 'enterprise way' at long last, so maybe they knew something was in the offing requiring a start in construction?

Absolutely, I think some of the Chinese construction firms and banks were planning to anchor the chinese part of Airport City. Hainan were also planning on opening their european HQ on site (I think it's currently in manchester City centre).

Together with a major commit from
Barclays, it will be well placed to grow further.

Tomorrow marks the 50th anniversary of the Stockport air crash. The Evening News has a number of pages on it starting off with this one: http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.../what-happened-stockport-plane-crash-13117279

There is also a small portion of the ATC recording on these pages. A full documentary will be played in Stockport Plaza on 10th June including the last 8 minutes of the flight.
RIP to all the victims

Thank you for the link, David.

A fascinating yet poignant read.

"No room for car parking unless pre booked.
Please find other arrangements."

Samantha and Sue the twitterati interns have just issued this somewhat blunt nessage at 630am.

I'm possibly being a bit naive here but how long has it been critical to Pre book a car park space?

My family have always just turmed up without any problems.

I only ask because following the "worst airports in the world" league table yesterday I fear there could be more PR storm clouds gathering today.

Maybe it's me but that does seem a bit
brutal and a bit late ?

Could this have not been anticipated?

As occupancy reached say 95% could warnings have been issued a few days back ?
I don't recall seeing any.

I can see a situation where families arriving in the next hour and starved of a parking spot will

A) tie up access lanes

B) and then enter a vehicle holding pattern in South Manchester as they scramble for a location

Meanwhile Mrs Angry in the passenger seat will immediately reach for the oxygen of social media OR the MEN. Especially as the clock starts ticking and they see their 2 week holiday going down the pan, as they drive round aimlessly.

It's clearly not the airports fault, you can't build infinite capacity, but you can put warnings out well in advance warning of such an outcome.

Issuing this "on the day, as you arrive"
although well intentioned appears a bit late, a bit calamatous and a possible PR disaster!

There is nothing on the website that indicates they anticipated any problems.

They do sign motorway closures up well in advance could that not have been done here 2/3 days out ?

Ps Further to my last there is now a tirade of reponses re people driving round, no warning etc

I think this just goes to show how crucial car parking is to the airport. So much land has been developed for this purpose - and more will be as part of the TP - that I expect we will see more MSCP's in the near future.

It's going to be interesting to see what the current political situation has on a number of aviation issues:
  • APD - apparently on the table from the DUP (perhaps limited to Northern Ireland only);
  • LHR expansion - this looks vulnerable with no Tory majority, the labour deputy in an "anti" seat and Tory rebels;
  • Brexit - the elephant in the room: open skies for 2019 is a very pressing deadline for route planners;
  • Development of a U.K. wide aviation policy.
We continue to live in "interesting" times...

I've always pre-booked a car park space - even in winter. Apart from the fact that I like to know I have a space, it is usually cheaper.

It's not as if there's no public transport provision for people to use. My brother lives down in Exeter and when we went to Iceland he travelled up to my place, parked his car and we used a taxi to/from the airport. Similarly for his last trip ex-MAN - got the tram to and from the airport leaving his car with me. None of this faffing around desperately trying to find a space which could impact on check-in times Maybe it's become far too convenient for people to go door to door in their own transport.

To be fair most on here are articulate in delivery therefore it's probably a given they know there way around the airport and airport issues.

We have to consider the "hapless public" and here, I'm reminded of that famous Monty Python sketch "spot the brain cell".

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
