I understand that ELOR is opening next week and is included as part of the traffic management scheme to accommodate traffic attending the Leeds Festival. It is mentioned on the Festival website as a route for local traffic wishing to avoid Festival traffic.

ELOR has opened this morning. A very impressive improvement to the Ring Road, much quicker, should improve accessibility to LBA from the motorways and the East.

I tried the new Orbital Route the other day when it opened, it was great. At a rough guess, it shaved about 10mins off the journey from North Leeds to the M1 junction, very impressed.

No doubt that the area just East of Leeds is the ideal location for an airport, with the M1, M62, A1 and Leeds/York and East Coast Main Lines all nearby. It's flat land too although still quite high by national standards. Even in the 30s this area was the original proposed site for an airfield by Leeds Corporation, but Bradford, with whom the Corporation were working on the project, objected, stating it was too far and difficult to get to. So we got Yeadon, which ironically is now stated to be too difficult to get to.

Even now, and especially if DSA closes, East Leeds would be perfect for a new airport for the county, being very central and accessible nowadays for all parts of the county. But this is Yorkshire, so it won't ever happen.

Yes I take your point @radar but once the new homes are built the congestion caused will remove the benefits of the new road.

The outer ring road was originally going to be dual carriage way, and if you look the land is within the curtilage of the present highway there is sufficient land without resorting to compulsory purchase. The section from Horsforth to Dawsons Corner is ripe for that.

The reason they haven't done this, is the railway bridge at the bottom of the ring road section from horsforth to rodley. It would need considerable work/disruption to rail services.
Not to mention the canal and river bridges

It would be simpler to span all three (rail line, River, canal) with a new flyover.

That is the reason I was given some 20 years ago. I was to.d that they could not accommodate the footway. A separate footway slung over the river/canal/ and railway at one side, as was done in Otley many years ago to allow the river to be crossed. It really is all about the lack of will power and not difficult engineering.

People need homes to live in correct. The trouble is the infrastructure for those new homes is never built, thought of, analysed and put in place before the new homes - no government has ever sat down and come up with long term strategy for everything. Or worked collectively as one to deliver the needs of what we want. That's why I'm so against homes before infrastructure.

East Leeds link road should be kept housing estate free on both sides of the roads and left alone. Should be a link road with primary purpose to serve as a link road easing congestion on Cross Gates and Seacroft.

A primary reason I'm against it is a case study. If your local you'll know that the road between Horsforth Roundabout and Rodley Roundabout, and both roundabouts, are a nightmare to navigate. Yet we have some brown belt land renovated into a huge housing estate. Of which I don't object to. But the infrastructure of the area cannot cope and as such we now see traffic Jams and build ups at every hour of the day. As if that's not bad enough, I saw today, that they are building a new housing estate on one of what used to be the playing fields on the left hand side as you travel down from Horsforth to Rodley. Contributing to yet more traffic and straining the already strained infrastructure.

Do we keep just building new homes without new road and infrastructure? This is what will happen if we allow developers to get their filthy hands on the land around East Link Road. The road will become congested and drive traffic back to Seacroft and Cross Gates which is completely against its intention.

It's not just in Leeds. They are building new houses here on the east coast with one new roundabout, no schools/NHS facilities/shops shutting down. It's barmy.

Yes that is very true. The NWO wants people to move to the Cities and therefore more housing will be built.
Reading on another web site, another park and ride is to be built on 'the A64 beyond Whinmoor', I presume that the short bits of dead end carriageway to the north side of the A64 near the new road are for the park and ride.

As it happens the entire route from dawsons corner all the way to the start of the new east orbital ring road at roundhay has plenty of land on each side to widen it to dual carriageway.

LCC’s contribution (£57.16m)* to the overall cost of the road (£147.49)* is to be recouped from the developers by way of payments under provisions in the S106 agreements attached to the planning permissions.

A costed feasibility study into dualling the whole of the ring road was carried out some some years ago with, I think I recall, an estimated cost of £150m even though most of the land required is already part of the highway. It wasn’t progressed I assume because the funding wasn’t forthcoming. No doubt today it would cost far more with soaring inflation and as with ELOR major improvements seem more likely to take place with funding contributions from new developments which have a direct benefit from the improvements.

The initial consultation for the P&R site was beyond ELOR opposite Langlands Garden Centre which seems far from ideal. LCC’s response is awaited. The ‘short bits of dead end carriageway’ are to serve the new residential development. The first section to be developed will be between the A64 and A58.

In fact there's a proposal. How about one of they build a large reservoir next to the road? That would be beneficial for everyone.

One housing estate planned at the southern end near Springs and Colton. The other further to the northern end. My concern is them doing large estates on the road that connects Barwick in Elmet/Scholes with York Road/Ring road. That will ruin the country side and cause more congestion to the surrounding roads.

All this whilst failing to sort the other infrastructure problems out - reservoirs, transportation, health care, schools, colleges.

In fact there's a proposal. How about one of they build a large reservoir next to the road? That would be beneficial for everyone.

The proposed residential development all lies between ELOR and the existing built up area. The open countryside beyond ELOR is green belt. Within the areas to be built new schools, and other facilities are planned. A planning application has been submitted for the area north of LeedsRoad/Barwick Road extending to the A64, the Middle Quadrant of the East Leeds Extension.

I agree a major failing of government/the system is a lack of joined up thinking and forward planning on the provision of infrastructure and services in medium and long term. A result of politicians working to a 5 year time horizon to either stay in power or get into power to the detriment of the well being of the country.
