Airports of the world April addition has a feature spread on Bristol, its growth, future and an in depth interview with the CEO. Should be worth a read for all those interested in all things BRS...

Immigration Queues

I note that (presumably) in response to numerous complaints about the length of queues at busy times the airport has now posted this notice at the top of its website home page.

Arrivals redevelopment work January - April 2017: Work is underway to enlarge the immigration hall and increase the number of passport control points available from April this year. We apologise for any delays to passengers arriving back in the UK while this work is taking place.

What really baffles me is why they didn't do this right from the start, it may of helped reduce the amount complaints on twitter, it could of been handled much better than it has been. When you read some of the tweets, it suggests arriving passengers were completely unaware of the development work going on. So its seems a lack of communication directly to its customers has promoted such negativity.

I agree. I often say that we live in a time where the means of communication, often instant or nearly instant, has never been so widespread yet the communication itself from organisations is often found wanting.

Having said that I would bet that many passengers, if they read the airport website at all, would somehow miss or not take in the content of the notice. I was listening to the local radio last week where new restrictions have been placed on people turning up at recycling centres with their discarded rubbish - I think it was in North Somerset.

The radio interviewer spoke to several disgruntled local residents who complained that they had not been informed of the new restrictions and had made wasted journeys as a result. The local council representative said they had sent notices to every householder warning them of the changes and had followed this up with 30,000 emails to those they could contact in this way. Clearly a lot of people had not bothered to read, ignored or forgotten about the notices from the council.

So I have some sympathy with the airport management in getting their message across but they could have been more proactive in this from an earlier stage.

The airport makes constant announcements to a incoming passengers that the reason for the delays is building work in the immigration hall. So that is not the issue.

When passengers are made to wait for 30 mins in the walkways, because the areas around the staircase have to be kept clear for H& S reasons, the passengers are asking why do so many planes land at once? If airport knows there is ongoing works then reduce flights or spread them around the clock. The afternoon and evening peak remains. Its all about revenues.

It's down to the airlines as to what schedules they operate. Airlines obviously want to maximise the use of their aircraft. The only way that BRS would be likely to see a more even spread would be if airlines used many more non-based aircraft.

The problem there is that most airlines don't have that many bases around Europe (Ryanair excepted), therefore routes served from BRS would be substantially reduced.

As it is with easyJet basing 14 aircraft, most will do at least three rotations a day leading to the peaks and troughs.

I suppose passengers must decide whether they want a large array of routes and put up with some inconvenience or go back to the BRS of the period up to the early 1980s when there were few flights and few destinations. It was a leisurely and pleasant experience for the passenger though as I recall from personal experience. I don't enjoy flying these days one bit, whether from BRS or from anywhere else.

Precisely. The peaks will remain as long as the BRS based aircraft do three rotations.

Next question is, will the 10 egates help? Probably. If they all work. They dont all work at the same time in most other airports.

Plus we have the same issue of the staircase. I bang on about it as that is the biggest pinch point. I am afraid if the summer traffic goes up the holding of passengers will continue if the egates are down or partially working. Twitter feed will go ballistic i guess.

I still maintain that the new security clearance area for outbound passengers will create havoc in the summer peaks.

The area is large and airy but i think the process is much much slower. The trays move far too slowly down the aisles.

So they wont have queues snaking down to the checkin areas but the crowds upstairs in security will be huge. Twitter will bear the brunt of it.

Let's hope it's not as bad as you fear. When I said in my previous post that I don't enjoy flying one bit these days I was referring mainly to the airport experience - any airport. it's just too much hassle. I suppose I was looking back, probably with rose-tinted spectacles, to the days when passing through an airport was a civilised and enjoyable experience, especially if you liked aircraft.

I've gone through the new security search are about a dozen times or so now, and I'm still impressed. Also love the big screen in the background, now that it works again. The colourful photos never fail to put me in a good mood. As you say, it remains to be seen how things will go in peak time summer. There is not that much space to queue. Does anyone know what is being worked on up there at the moment, in the boarded-up sections before the boarding pass gates?

Having said that, I feel that the airport at least does an honest effort to get things moving through security, instead of using long security queues to force people into buying fast lane tickets.(I wouldn't say the same about, say, Belfast intl).

As a farewell tour 4 Lynx helicopters will be doing a flypast of the airport at 10:15 am today 17 March.

For those interested.

As any news about BRS seems to have dried up at present and it doesn't look as though there will be anything new in terms of routes/carriers announced for summer from now on, I've been idly trawling the internet to see if anything of interest was around.

One thing caught my eye in a web newspaper article about CWL which brought this response from a poster to that newspaper site.

Remember when British Airways launched their low cost airline, called "Go"?
Go wanted to be based at Cardiff.
The private owners of Cardiff at that time, told them "No, Go somewhere else".
They did Go, to Bristol.
Go were then bought out by EasyJet.
If the private owners weren't such a bunch of clueless idiots, Cardiff could've had all those EasyJet routes that Bristol has now.

It's clearly nonsense that Go wanted to be based at CWL. Go's CEO Barbara Cassani in her book go an airline adventure set out the process from which Bristol was selected as the airline's second base after Stansted. Consultants were used to keep the airline's identity secret and the net was cast widely across mainland Europe and the UK. In the end a shortlist was drawn up that involved East Midlands, Newcastle, Glasgow/Edinburgh and Bristol. CWL may have thrown its hat into the ring at one point as did no doubt other airports but to say Go wanted to be based there is just wrong.

Anyway, apart from wondering where people get such notions, which they probably convince themselves are true, I thought, what if?

What if Go had gone to CWL?
Would they have established over 60 routes there as they have at BRS?
Would BRS now be limping along with 2-3 mppa? (it was over 2 mppa before Go began to operate)
Would other airlines have filled the void?
Would Ryanair have had a greater presence or would it have gone to CWL too? (there were rumours of expansion when the then CWL management effectively pulled the plug in 2006 by raising charges and the sole Ryanair route [Dublin] was axed by the airline)

My alter ego did a post last year on another aviation website posing the question whether Bristol needs an airport at all, surrounded as it is by other airports at such places as Cardiff, Birmingham, Exeter, with Bournemouth and Southampton useful for some parts of the catchment, not to mention the major airport which is the de facto long haul airport for West Country travellers along the M4 at Heathrow. I didn't get much of a response, one way or the other, although the said aviation website was a well-known one.

It was really meant to generate some 'out of the box' thinking. The proposition could apply to a number of cities.

Easter 2017 – Busy Easter getaway at Bristol Airport

Created: 11th Apr 2017

More than 100,000 passengers are expected to use Bristol Airport this Easter weekend (Friday 14 April - Monday 17 April) an increase of over 18% growth on the same period last year.

The recently commenced Ryanair flight to Zadar, as well as the Thomas Cook flights to Malta offering Fly Cruise holidays adds additional choice and options to passengers wishing to get away this summer.

But it’s not all one way traffic. Bristol Airport is expecting an influx of visitors from around the UK and overseas as travellers head for the South West to catch up with friends and family or enjoy the region’s attractions.

Passengers are advised to arrive at least two hours ahead of their flight’s scheduled departure to ensure they have time to check in, clear security and board their flight. Passengers are also advised to check roadworks or travel congestion and plan their journey accordingly over the busy Easter getaway.

Two, customer improvement projects in are nearing completion. Two new dedicated Fast Track security channels for departing passengers will be available late-April, and the final stages of the £2.3m Immigration improvements offering an increased number of ePassport gates for passengers will be available before the end of the month, ahead of the busy summer.

Woman crashed into BMW and VW in Bristol Airport car park as she drove like she was 'at the dodgems'

http://www.bristolpost.co.uk/news/bristol-news/woman-crashed-bmw-vw-bristol-20027

I mist this post on Friday. We had a person who did something similar in a local supermarket car park. They totally lost control of their car causing injuries to a number of people in the vicinity. I don't know if they got their foot stuck on the accelerator or what but it was a nasty accident.

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
