Bidding starts for Birmingham Airport terminal expansion

Birmingham Airport is seeking to appoint a main contractor to undertake the construction of its Terminal 3 Extension project.

The scope of the project known as TE18 involves the construction of a three-storey extension to the existing terminal building and refurbishment of existing toilet facilities within the terminal building.

This will involve demolition of existing slabs and structures to make way for construction of a structural frame for the extension.

Firms have until 17 August to express their interest in bidding for the project on the procurement portal. Shortlisted firms will be invited to tender in early January.

That sounds quite substantial with demolition involved as well. Wherever it is, I just hope it's not a cheap supermarket-plastic-clad job like Luton.

I can only think of two locations where they could put an extension without reconfiguring any aircraft stands/taxiways - on the (landside) end of the Eurohub extending SE, and the eastern end of the International Pier extending NW.

I would have thought the latter is a better candidate for extension as I've heard of it being a real bottleneck when flights are boarding down that end.

This is apparently a £15 million contract which, in the grand scheme of things, doesn't seem a huge amount of money.

I have a feeling that it may be the departure lounge extension which fills in the gap between the existing facility and the shorter pier. It was discussed at a recent meeting with rumours that it was imminent.

Would this not come under permitted development and therefore not require an application?

I always try to be a glass half-full type of guy and don't go out of my way to be cynical, but this latest 'expansion' plan does worry me a bit.

The total cost, quoted as being £15million, does not sound very much to me, if fact it sounds not much at all.

So what are we going to get for the money? Given the schedule as appeared in the Birmingham Post i would have thought that after designers, engineers, builders and whoever else will be involved, that amount of cash would just about cover the toilets.....

I hope i am not being cynical and that there will be some significant development details contained in the schedule.

I do share your cynicism Richard.Particularly when you read "toilet refurbishment" as part of the scheme.
It might improve some passengers experience but i suspect not many,

I've just had a look at the Solihull MBC website for an application but there still isn't one listed.

One thing I did notice is an application for the demolition of Hangar 2 which the letter suggests is due to start in September.

The infill application is now on the SMBC website number PL/2018/02090/PPFL.

The proposed development will deliver an enhanced retail offer, improved passenger experience and a new toilet block, whilst providing additional operational areas for baggage handling and logistics, and further airline lounge provision to meet the requirements of increasing passenger numbers at Birmingham Airport.

There should be 5 new retail units and 10 new food and drink units.

This is actually much bigger than I thought it would be....

For those yet to look at the application, the proposal includes the following as shown in the images above.

- a 2,500 sqm extension to baggage reclaim. The plans do not need to show internal fitting so it isn't yet clear as to how many additional luggage builts this can accommodate but it appears this will equate to an increase in the baggage hall by about 30-40%

- a small 100 sqm extension to arrival passport control

- a large 5,400 sqm, 2 storey extension to the existing departure lounge including 10x new retail units, 5x restaurants with mezzanine level of central glass ceiling. Other features also include 2,500 sqm of seating/circulation space, a new external smoking terrace, new toilets and a 2 storey high green wall.

- 1,340 sqm of external offices and stourage.

The initial sketches I say envisaged this being a 2 storey building not 3 but the addition of a glass roof and atrium will really help add natural light to the departure lounge! Also great to see the baggage hall extended....

Forget the enlarged baggage reclaim and passport control,glass roof and new toilets.Just a byproduct of the big news. 10 x retail units and 5 x restaurants.
Presumably the existing outlets are not bothered by the reducing footfall.Pity one of their employees is not on the forum and could tell us what they know and we don't.

...well it looks like 3 units will be lost in the process ...boots being one of them! Based on pax figures and capacity, I suspect they would want less footfall or more space. The current status quo isn’t an option
