Procurement for the new HS2 station will begin in the new year. The article below gives a little more detail about the automated people mover.

The APM will connect HS2 to the NEC, the International Station and the airport and will take six minutes end to end with a three minute maximum wait time. It will have a capacity of around 3,900 people per hour in each direction, upgradable to 6,000 by “simply changing the carriages” in a future upgrade.

Historic terminal building in line for upgrade as Atkins appointed to Birmingham Airport job

£500m scheme will include revamping 1930s Art Deco landmark

Atkins has been appointed to project manage a £500m upgrade of Birmingham Airport which will include bringing back into use an Art Deco gem at the site.

The firm will oversee work to extend the airport’s terminals and reconfigure the airfield by 2033.

Among the proposals for the next 15 years is a plan to refurbish the airport’s first terminal building and turn it into an accommodation and training centre for airport staff.

A visitor centre would be nice for aspiring spotters. When I was little going to the little shop to get aircraft postcards and the cafeteria to drink pop and watch the planes being serviced in the comfort of indoors was my weekend treat and bagging a seat with a little telly was the best. Set me up for a lifetime interest in aviation.

The original terminal is ideal if not to be used for passenger purposes. Open a terrace upstairs for photography and ATC feed. A modest entry charge to cover costs.

I remember trying so hard to sit on the sides of the viewing area! The counter tops were so high! There was a disabled area with raised floor that helped me as a small kid. And I always remember that Jimbo the jet-set ride that would constantly churn out the same song.

I thnk JENNY JET is referring to the original Elmdon terminal as I well remember the cafe, shop and of course the steps etc going back in my case to the1960s.

Yes Rollo, the spiral steps outside offered a limited view but was an excellent position to take photos of the giants from Canada. All before the current terminals were constructed. There was another shop a little up the road selling airband radio stuff at the back of the hangars, wondering if they gone now. All this with the Art Deco terminal as the centrepiece of my free/wagging it time!! School hours were so inconvenient!

Architectural master piece please rather than drab functionality. HS2 Curzon Street on speed, rather than dull concepts for UK Central Hub station proposed a mile or two away. Of course mut still be functional. It is after all the stopping off point for many million or so who use the station to visit the National Exhibition Centre and the 39 people who use the airport....😏

Does anyone know how many people use the station for the airport? It handled c6.7 million passengers in 2017/18. So I would hope more than my jestful 39.

Just rename it as BIRMINGHAM AIRPORT & NEC. Keeping things simple yet INTERNATIONAL should say it all!

Don’t know how many, but met some visitors from Dublin on a Sunday last July and it was possible to see when a train had arrived, by the surge of passengers and the fact that one of the airport link units would not take them all

No idea of the actual numbers but it seems to be quire a lot. I have always found it strange that the airport has never seemed to
make a point of the rail connection. I cannot recall it ever being used in any advertising campaign yet they now plan their future on a rail line
and station a long way from being built.If ever
They are promoting their new electric busses and discouraging car use but i bet if you asked them how many passengers used the rail station they would not know.

Thanks all. That is what I thought. Integrated transport, smart transport and efficient mass transport is the future. What HS2 and 3 will do, should do, is eradicate the need for internal flights in the UK.

So how about this for a change in direction: use the airport as a multi modal transport hub. Wanna fly across the Atlantic? Come to Birmingham airport, check in and catch a train to Heathrow. Get to Heathrow in 30 minutes. Likewise coming to Brum. 30 minutes from Heathrow.

Check in at Brum but fly out 100 miles away.

That is why HS2 and 3 puts Birmingham once again at the nations transport core.

No city in the UK is better connected when you consider all modes of transport. I work in strategic planning in sunny Esex and down here the Midlands is the envy of all when it comes to connectivity. Put the airport at the heart of something far bigger than just planes.

Just a thought.
