I feel we are getting a little carried away with the "slot request" from easyJet. I believe they could make money on the BFS service with BFS base a/c, so lets get them doing that first before we start talking about an easyJet base.

Makes sense that they would start with away based aircraft which is what they are doing down here at BHX.

They started with Belfast a while back and built that up and were scheduled to go twice daily from Edinburgh and Glasgow before conavirous but are due to start them up shortly hopefully.

So slowly slowly catch a monkey as they say, patience is a virtue.

I'm having 2nd thoughts about easyjet. As they have just imformed the unions that the closing 3x UK bases at London Southend, London Stansted & Newcaslte Airports.

wow that is a shock if there closing those bases esp Stansted and southend who massively depend on them! If that news is true it means nothing to LBA because it might even free up an aircraft for Belfast operations and easyjet will look for the most profit routes of which the flybe LBA-Belfast route saw high loads.

I still wouldn't rule it out. Flybe had a successful route between Leeds and Belfast and if easyjet have capacity at Belfast, or they have another route that they believe isn't going to perform sufficiently then LBA might be an option for them as a route that's already proven.

This is a shock...it wasn't long ago that we were saying Easyjet might be a substantive (and very welcome) addition for a wide range of routes at LBA. I've said it before... but...thank goodness for Jet2. I guess we now pin our hope's on Wizz coming up with the goods post covid? Otherwise, where is our growth going to come from?

I would not write off EasyJet on the BFS -LBA route. It looks a good prospect to make a profit over the years.

Fingers crossed. It seems a no brainer to me to operate it and we would at least have one Easyjet route, if not the selection we were hoping for.

What is clearly obvious is that many other airports out there are suffering far worse than LBA in this covid nightmare, Ok we have lost BA and flybe although I expect like has occurred some flybe routes will be covered in the future. The fact we have jet2 here at leeds with their increased programme next year and Ryanair who look to be adding an extra B737 together with all our other key airlines (klm, aer lingus, eastern) puts us in a healthy position. Many other airports will literally half their normal passenger figures and for some like Belfast city its very grim. Wizz would be a very good airline to get into Leeds I feel as they may look for a more populated area due to less foreign workers here now.

It's a 200,000 pax per year route. As long as they have aircraft at Belfast it shouldn't impact on them potentially doing the LBA route.
easyJet must have known about these closures when they applied for the LBA route slots.

I think easyJet have plenty of planes available to fly BFS-LBA without having to close down bases. Like all airlines, they have more planes than they need at the moment.

Those routes that operate to other easyJet bases can be covered from the 'other end' if easyJet so decides. It will be more difficult with routes to non-bases unless easyJet goes in for w-diagrams, something that they have done in the past but not to a great extent.

easyJet also says the rest of its UK network is 'under review' so there could be more changes to come, if not more base closures.

If its international travel thats up and down because of quarantines from time to time then surely domestic travel (on a route where pax have been at high volumes) where there are fewer restrictions would be more sensible especially over the lean winter - reports are the base at NCL will close end August.

I actually think the news yesterday reg easyjet closing 3 bases actually reinforces and strengthens the chances of an LBA-BFS route, it would appear easy will be flying into airports but not actually having a base there, for eg I can see BFS-NCL continuing, so a LBA-BFS I think is still on the cards.

I would agree! Its a 'trunk route' and won't be subject to international restrictions and BFS is not closing!

I really think post-pandemic easyJet could use this route as a profitable option in their business. The market is definitely there for someone to take the BFS route from Leeds and the passenger demand should and would be there for them. I would think of it as 'dipping your toe into the water' option. If it works then continue the route and possibly expand in the future with a new terminal or if it doesn't then simply end the route after a few months if its not proving profitable for them.

Time will tell and hopefully they'll make the jump and start the route up.

Not strictly LBA related but this has just been announced - the emphasis on domestic trade may still mean the application for LBA - BFS is bubbling around somewhere.

Thats quite a big blow for NCL, im surprised that Liverpool has managed to keep a fairly large easyjet operation esp with MAN nearby. Will be a fair few easyjet planes hanging about now!
