I imagine this doesn’t come cheap, it’s an expensive business running an airport.
Around 10 years ago, we were told that excluding any major projects , the cost of running LBA was £29m per annum. I can only imagine what that cost is today given the rampant inflation over the past few years, and that's before projects such as this one, and the new ILS aerials are added.

We didn't receive a press release for that. Some genuine good old fashioned positive reporting?

I thought LBA would wait until the equipment is moved to the new location before upgrading.
Left hand and right hand possibly not talking to each other? Not for the first time and CERTAINLY not the last either.

They have a new locally based marketing/advertising company so maybe thats the reason.

Well, relatively, I was told by one of the airport directors about 2 months back they had just switched from the previous London based agency to a local one.

The agents they used a couple of years ago was in Leeds. Aviador, LBASpotter and myself have had a meeting with them back then.

Work must of started inside the terminal security area as the following message has appeared on the airports website home page this morning.

We are currently upgrading our security area with new technology to enhance the security process for all our departing passengers; please allow extra time and plan to arrive a bit earlier than usual when going through security.

Possibly the new kit that removes the need for liquids to be in small containers and plastic see through bags?
Yes it is...When we went through in August one of the guys there said they were starting to install in November and you will be able to leave liquids and iPads/Kindles etc in your hand luggage...Shoes and belts remain on as well...He reckoned it would revolutionise security and speed of access....If so let's hope LBA make a big thing of it before the main holiday booking season starts...
Every little helps

Work to move the security area is some way off as it will be going where the current arrivals hall is. If I remember correctly the new scanning equipment will be mandatory from next year at all UK airports. I don't think the current location will be large enough for much of it although the new scanners will allow for quicker egress through the security channels into departures. Expect more equipment and more lanes when it moves to its new location later.

Yes that's correct. And not only more lanes, they'll be longer lanes too, and those staff monitoring the scanners will be located away from the lanes in an adjacent dedicated room. All part of phase 2 though

All major UK airports are required to have the new 3D scanners operational by next June. I don't know what the definition of a major airport is but Teesside for example already has them up and running. BHX security area is undergoing a pretty big re-vamp to accommodate them.

Half of the current security screening area is boarded off to allow for these new machines to be installed. They will then do the other half over several weeks.

This should hopefully make a noticeable difference for next summer and also when they open the new security area in a few years.

Lots of difficulties at the moment with very long queues at times ie the first wave...LBA now advising to arrive 3 hours before your flight but not more than that....you can imagine the social media response

Heads Up!

For some weird reason, my days off work tend to involve being out of my flat by 5am and not getting back until 10pm. Back to work and the regular "fix" of 7.40am to 7.15pm hours

Some explosive weather build-ups currently in the North of England. What is it like where you are?
