A most bizarre afternoon of diversions, to and from BHX and EMA.
It seemed to start with TUI 738 G-FDZZ due at BHX around 13.30. It left Corfu and suffered a puncture on take off. Why it needed to go to EMA is unsure?. However it kicked off several diversions for both airports.

Been reported that G-FDZZ lost a tyre on departure from Corfu, no idea why it diverted to East Midlands, unless Birmingham would not accept it as it would involve closing the runway for a few hours, and thus 6 EMA flights diverted to BHX!
BBC reported the incident in their usual way... One diverted plane sat on the runway for an hour and was refuelled on the runway, apparently. Must have peeved off other pilots!

My guess would be favourable wind direction at EMA with the pilots knowing they were going to have reduced braking and unknown damage to the other wheel. Was there was a crosswind at BHX?
Reported that its a technical problem with the NATS system with widespread national disruption

a few BHX nbounds were diverted due to not being able to enter UK airspace
TUI B788 from Kos to Brussels, Easyjet A320 from Heraklion to Paris CDG, and 2 Jet 2 B738s from Catania and Kos went to Paris CDG and Brussels.

Not sure if it collapsed or was a belly landing but assume the runway will be closed for a good couple of hours at least.

Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
