bmibaby to launch new flight between Birmingham and Newquay

Cheap flights carrier bmibaby will launch a new flight between Birmingham International Airport and Newquay on May 22nd.

The new route, which will run until September 20th, will operate on Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, with bmibaby expecting to carry more than 20,000 passengers on the flight over the summer.

bmibaby's managing director Crawford Rix said that the airline was "proud" to introduce a new flight from Birmingham International Airport.

"This destination is currently not served by any other airline from Birmingham, so by launching this new service we are offering customers a unique summer destination at fantastically low fares," he said.

Newquay has been a popular holiday destination for a number of years, offering a stunning coastline and a number of gold, sandy beaches.

Earlier this week, bmibaby confirmed that it will launch a new flight between Cardiff and Almeria.

The flight, which will run on Mondays and Fridays, will operate between May 22nd and October 22nd as part of the airline's summer schedule.

Speculation is mounting that the airline is on the verge of announcing that is to withdraw services from Birmingham. Does anybody have any more information about this?

No information except that the fruit board says there will be an important announcement on Wednesday.

As you may have seen, some people's imaginations are running riot over there suggesting all sorts of doom and gloom for the airline, and not only for BHX.

All the speculation about what is likely to happen to bmi and its baby must be mind-blowing for the staff. They have my sympathy.

Doesn't Lufty own Germanwings? They might have decided to tie-up the Bmibaby business with the German company to create a new pan-European airline....?

Yes they do. Germanwings has a fleet of A319s and there has been conjecture they might merge/absorb baby but I think that's just one of many scenarios that has been put about.

Addendum

I've had a flip through some websites this evening (2 Nov 09) and find Times Online reporting that Lufthansa has withdrawn bmi from sale, having failed to attract bidders. The report says they will try to turn around the airline and also says that Regional and baby might be closed down or sold to Flybe that has expressed an interest.

[textarea]BMI axe Aberdeen – Birmingham route

BMI has announced it will axe its route between Aberdeen and Birmingham from October 29 because the route has not ‘performed as expected’, the Press & Journal reports. The airline currently operates 11 weekly flights in each direction between the cities. Competitor Flybe immediately moved to fill the gap left by BMI and announced it would add four flights per week to its schedule to and from the north-east and the Midlands.

A spokeswoman for BMI said passengers booked on flights after October 29 would be refunded or rescheduled. She said: ‘The route between Aberdeen and Birmingham has not performed as expected, and with no sign of the situation improving BMI has taken the difficult decision to cancel this service.’ The spokeswoman added the cancellation means the airline will add a sixth weekly rotation to its service between Aberdeen and Manchester, ‘enabling us to meet the demand for seats during the peak afternoon travel period’.

With the closure of the Manchester and Cardiff bases from this autumn aircraft will be redistributed and BHX will receive an additional based aircraft.

New routes will be announced shortly.

How many aircraft does Bmibaby have at Birmingham airport, any idea?

baby has three aircraft based at BHX at present so even my basic maths can work out this will go up to four this autumn.

EMA currently has seven so it will go to eight, and the new BHD base will take the other two which gives a total fleet of 14.

Bmibaby Summer 2012 schedule is out!

New routes from Birmingham International to:-

Rome
Barcelona
Lisbon
Prague

At last BHX has some new routes and to some new Exciting european cities not already served from BHX. Well done BMIBABY ;)

Were none of the new routes on offer before? I can't believe Rome, Barcelona & certainly Prague weren't on offer before. Perhaps Lisbon because that's an unusual one.

You can fly with Ryanair to Prague from BHX, but there are no flights at present direct from BHX to Barcelona, Rome or Lisbon.
So this is very welcome news indeed.
The very reason why BHX is not growing at the moment becouse its just relying on the same old routes and the same customers.
This is the kind of development it needs to get the PAX figures rising again after a few years of decline.

The next European routes i would like to see at BHX are Madrid and Berlin????????????

Just looked at an old timetable from Winter 1996/7 and BA were flying daily to Barcelona.

Not good news to report.

But its been rumoured this afternoon that low cost airline bmi baby will be closed down by IAG in September. This will hit hard for Birmingham Airport as they currently have 4x based aircraft.

No longer a rumour. As it's just now been confirmed that bmi baby will be closed down in September by it's new owners IAG.

bmi baby routes from Birmingham Airport to both Ireland West Knock and Amsterdam will be cancelled from Monday 11th June 2012 while the airlines remaining summer holiday flying will continue to operate until September 10th.

No surprise really.

7 May 2012

Welcoming the announcement, Aer Lingus Chief Commercial Officer Stephen Kavanagh said, “Aer Lingus is delighted be extending its Aer Lingus Regional network to include Birmingham-Knock. The addition of this new service further demonstrates the continued success of the Aer Lingus Regional franchise.”

That's great news that the route is going to be taken on by Aer Lingus. Will it also be the second route for Aer Lingus with Aer Arann from BHX?

Last chance for some pickies. ;)
It will be sad to see them go. Bmibaby was a good brand it just wasn't given the propper backing from it's parent company it deserved.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
