Wow, what a trip!

Was tempted to hit the Report button if only to warn you about the effects of alcohol and altitude. Then remembered the many inflight drinks, especially Cyprus Airways ex LHR when everything was free.:hungover:

I recall a flight to Nairobi when a passenger seat next to me guzzled his way to oblivion on free drinks. A constant flow of the hard stuff until they refused him, leading to him being noisy and illtempered towards cabin staff during dinner service. I can understand why that part of the fare has changed.

The Andover was a modified version of the 748, slightly shorter wing span, uprated engines with a raised rear fuselage with a rear loading door and uniquely had a main kneeling undercarriage to facilitate loading.
The HS780 Andover C Mk1 is the aircraft that you describe. There were also the C Mk1 (PR) photo reconnaissance and the E3/E3A radio and and nav aid calibration aircraft.
The aircraft used by the Queens Flight was the Andover CC Mk2 which was a VIP version of the HS748 (i.e. it didn't feature the rear fuselage changes or the kneeling landing gear.

I was on a flight many yeas ago (Continental B747-100 LGW - HOU) and the passenger behind me asked the Flight Attendant for a whisky every time she went passed. The trouble was, he kept sticking his head between the headrests to ask me questions about the scenery. The alcohol on his breath was enough to knock anyone out. The strange thing was, he was travelling with his wife and their very young daughter.

JennyJet, doubt it would have troubled his father.

Although Prince Philip took the controls of Concorde and was on the flightdeck for many of their overseas trips, not sure if he was ever proficient on Airbus. Methinks some research needed....

UK Charter/Scheduled Airlines,
Britannia 757 G-OAHI came in from LTN on 16/9 to operate t/f MAH whilst on 18/9 Nortjet 737-400 EC-EMY operated for Airtours while a MD83 was on check. On 19/9 BAF 1-11 G-AZUK positioned in to operate some BEA schedules as a 1-11 had gone tech.
With BEA 2 Jetstreams were restored to service by mid-month,and they gradually took over the work of the Shorts 360`s.Both left BHX on delivery to their former owners around 29/9,one going to BHD, and one to EXT.The third J31 G-CBEA remains in any pieces at the back of the BEA hangar after a lease to Brymon failed.G1 G-BNKO is back in the air,and is expected to be delivered to a Canadian operator.( North American Airlines as C-GNAK W/O 17/9/02 crashed in Canada).G1 G-BMOW will be restored to service after KO departs, and it is expected G1 G-BNKN will return from storage with NEA Aviation in MAN.G-BMOW and J31 G-WMCC are in full BEA c/s ,G-BNKO is all white, and J31 G-OBEA is white with BEA titles.
Turning now to the collapse of TEA(UK) Airlines.Last month it was reported that the parent company TEA Belgium was in deep financial trouble, and had applied for protection from its creditors, and 1 of its 737`s had been impounded at LGW by Eurocontrol in mid September.TEA (UK) had been trying to finf new financial backing.
However Manchester Airport decided to take steps to recover around £100,000 in owed handling charges from TEA(UK).Thet seized 737 G-TEAA at lunch-time on 27/9.As they were unable to pay up straight away it being too late on a Friday, word quickly spread to other UK airports about the situation in MAN.By 14.30 2 aircraft,G-DIAR and OO-LTK,were impounded at BHX,with G-TEAB held at EMA ang G-NAFH at LGW.So as the airline was grounded ABTA and the tour operators began a rescue plan. TEA(UK) major customer was Owners Abroad, with Sunworld and Thomson having contracts. At BHX by mid-evening a rescue was underway. The 737`s at BHX and EMA had passengers on-board when the decision to cease flying was made.
At BHX the 2 Friday outbound flights were rescheduled with MAH pax coached to LGW ,whilst a Monarch 757 positioned in to fly to AGP.Later that evening Adria MD82 YU-ANG arrived and became based until well into October.
The following flights operated for the first few days after the grounding,

28/9 EL-AKC AIR GAMBIA 707 from AGP as AMM4638,positioned out

30/9 LN-NOR 733 NORWAY A/L in as NOR900,operated BY701/2 t/f LCA on 1/10
LZ-MIK VARNA INT TU154 flew 1 more unknown flight
SE-DLD TIME AIR SWEDEN 737 arrived as SDN101 to operate AMM?
YU-ANG ADRIA MD82 operated AMM2671/2
In the first week of October the Adria MD82 YU-ANG with help from Varna TU154 LZ-MIR at weekends operated most flights, with Air Norway 733 operarting for Thomson.During the second week of Oct Atlantisflug 727 TF-AIA flew for Thomson.
After the collapse the 2 planes at BHX were released on the following Sunday, and the 3 at MAN,LGW,EMA left on Saturday.OO-LTK went to CBG,G-TEAA/B to GPA at SNN,and G-NAFH,DIAR to ILFC at DUB.
British Midland continued to use Dash 7s on the LHR service as the ATP`s were back at Woodford for mods. The DC9-10 continues to fly 3 daily to BRU.
Regards,Simon.

Elmdon 74, thanks for that trip down memory lane!

So many airlines and aircraft types. Was Alidair the airline where a Viscount ran out of fuel and landed in a field near Ottery St Mary? Also, used to work with a girl who went to work for TEA as cabin crew. Completed training and did a couple of flights before they went bust.

I could go on.....

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!
If anyone would like to share their local airport news right here in our news area let me know so I can give you the correct permissions to do so. It only takes a couple of minutes to upload a news story with an accompanying image. The news items can then be shared on the site homepage by you. #TakePart #Forums4airports Bring the news to one place!
survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
