getting back to Beatties model shop, I marvelled at those aircraft suspended on string from the ceiling envious of how brilliant they looked. I used to go there just to look at them. i cannot remember but I think there was a Braniff Orange B747. I begged my parents for one but was told it was for boy's only!

I have recently seen picturs on WIKI of BCAL aircraft at BHX. Can anyone ever recall being there?
Another couple, that I've found in my archive.

I don't remember models hanging from the ceiling, but do remember them in display cases. The painting was exquisite, with even the banding on the ejection handles depicted.

Sorry for my late reply. Yes, it's a Kenya Airways A310. Sorry I don't have a reg for it.

Not quite BCAL, but the DC-10's soldiered on for a while under the name 'Caledonian',

And also 'Cal Air' which later changed to 'Nov Air'.

I thought I had a photo of the Caledonian L-1011 Tristar, but can't seem to find it.

Yes, bring in the biggies. AN124, IL76 etc maybe AN22?
I've certainly seen IL76's at BHX. I remember one in particular. It was Aeroflot and landed R33. There was a large crowd that had turned out and were on the former grass viewing area adjacent to the R33 threshold. The Il76 taxied back down the parallel taxiway and would normally have taken the short runway (06/24) to the cargo apron. However, Air Traffic asked if they would take 'the long way round' in order to taxi past the large crowd. The Aeroflot crew were very obliging, and even waved as they passed, having to taxi back up R33 until turning off toward the cargo apron.

I believe it was IL76 CCCP-86866 on 8/6/88 f/t Riga, type f/v to BHX, remember him stopping on the taxiway next to the viewing area for a while for the many spectators and photographers there and the pilot waving to the crowd.Regards,Simon.

He parked on the old stand 21 diagonally (not Cargo area). Other visitors in later years were, CCCP-76758 in Heavylift colours, a Stansted diversion on 2.2.1992, RA-76756 on 15.10.1992, RA-76527 on 18.8.1993 and UR-76408 on 6.3.1994. There may have been others. Their travels were restricted in later years, I believe, as a result of European noise and emission controls. I’ll stand corrected on that. Visits for relief flights were allowed after that under special licence. Hope this is of interest to some.

Exactly 30 years ago today I logged my ever aircraft at BHX and my love for aviation began, It was the lunchtime AF flight from CDG it started F-GBY something Boeing 732 but if anyone cam help that would be great

Hi Dave. The lunchtime service was AFR940. Assuming you are certain of the date, a Google search shows 27/12/1992 was a Sunday. There were no services scheduled on Sat/Sun that month and no services for Fri 25th as the airport was closed. The only services were F-GBYI on Monday 28/12 (public holiday) and F-GBYD on Wednesday 30/12. The services on 29/12 and 31/12 were cancelled. Hope that helps.

Details from Airstrip magazine February 1993.

The IL78 and IL76 are my current favourites as I adore 4 engine T tails. Would be wonderful to see a C5 turn up.
I love the four engined jets too. From the VC-10, B707 and DC-8 through the soviet types, like the IL-62, Il-76 and the Il-86 to the modern B747, A380 and the A340-600.
The C-5 did turn up for the G8 Summit Conference -

Hope you enjoy.

BHX/LOG INFO January 1983,

Passenger figures for the month were 80,181 an 11.3% increase from 1982,mostly due to an extra 8,000 passengers handled on 90 extra flights from Manchester on 29,30/1 due to a firemans strike.
Aston Villa`s last European trip when they beat Barcelona in the two leg European Super Cup Final was disappointing charter wise as they used BA 1-11 G-BGKG 18/1 back 20/1,whilst supporters used Monarch 737 G-BJSO LTN-BCN 18/1,returning 20/1 BCN-GLA.For the second leg at Villa Park Barcelona came by scheduled flight into LHR.
Other charters were Genaie E110 G-BHYT from BRS 3/1 to Stockholm next day with Air Atlantique DC3 G-AMPY which came from Blackpool 4/1,both with Volvo parts.Centreline E110 G-CTLN 16/1 from EDI to LTN,then OY-ASL from LTN 18/1,back to EDI.
A rare visit from BCAL was 1-11 G-BKAW on 17/1 positioning from LGW for a charter to AGP,returning next day.Touraine Air Transport used FH-227 F-GCLM 21/1 f/t ORY with a party for the NEC.
BMA have been using F-27 G-BHMW on the LHR flights from 25/1 and around Christmas.BY had a couple of trooping flights 24/1 G-BADR from Gutersloh, departing to DUS,while G-BJCV also went to DUS
The only Air India 707 to visit was VT-DXT on 2.4,16,23,30/1 AI515/2 and 11,18,25/1 AI503/2.

The airport also published and sold a VHS tape of the whole event with some glorious shots of Bill Clinton and Boris Yeltsin descending the steps of their transports and climbing into their ‘beasts’. Plus the sounds of the heavy jets too. (For me the C141 was a star visitor. I think it parked on the end of what was the turning pan for RWY24 at the time.) It’s also in the loft somewhere ! Incidentally the last C5 to visit was a wx diversion from Mildenhall on 17.12.2016.
Was it the airport that published the video, or the spotters shop (I forget the name)? I have a DVD of the event, but it doesn't play well and keeps skipping.
As for the last C5 to visit, it was parked at the railway end of what was R06/R24, due to it having 'hazardous cargo'. I believe a photo was posted by Adil Ray OBE (Citizen Khan actor), taken from the train.

[EDIT] - found it, it was linked to by Ray Finkle -

Was pleased to see IL62 visited BHX, beautiful aircraft.
I like the IL-62 too. They look so similar to the VC-10, except for the much larger 'bullet' fairing at the top of the tail. In the photo I posted (sorry, it's a bit blurred), you can see a rod extending downwards from the rear fuselage. The IL-62 had a tenancy to 'tail sit' when empty so this rod (with wheels) was extended to prevent this. When retracted, the wheels were still proud of the fuselage and acted as a tail scape protection for take off and landing

The IL62 was indeed an interesting aircraft but I wouldn't call the tail wheel a clever solution more of a solution to a design fault. The clever one was the VC10 properly balanced therefore no problem to solve in the first place.
There are many photos of aircraft that have tipped often during loading/unloading freight.

Concorde had a tail wheel deployed on take off and landing due to the high angle of attack required on touchdown and landing 😀

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
