Wishlist and Predictions for 2024

I am sure if we write to Santa and ask for an extension built on the end of 32 on stills like Funchal has !
once the houses on Scotland Lane are demolished we could have another 1000ft of landing distance each end.
I have been good all year but not too sure about you others on here.

Sherburnflyer92, as regards white heather, do you digger! I am happy to call a spade a spade! Seriously though how lovely would it be to be able to flatten The Chevin. If only
Just the matter of a cemetery though, they would be enough distance between the runway and cemetery I'm sure and a tunnel would need to be constructed for cemetery road. What height do aircraft fly over otley chevin when landing atm, I guess it's more the ils that would faulter if they were a little lower?

If ever they extended the runway at that end, the cemetery would have to go, at least in part, as it falls within the area required either side which has to be flat, and yes either a tunnel or significant divert would be required for the road. Can you imagine the stink kicked up at a cemetery being dug up and the residents moved? It won't happen.

Not sure what height aircraft are when clearing the Chevin but the glideslope is 3.5 degrees instead of the usual 3 degrees, hence Cat 1 ILS only.

I don't believe part of the cemetery would have to be removed as cemetery road runs between the two so there is a fair bit of space, but like you say can you imagine if bodies had to removed from the cemetery, what a performance that would be! As an example at Southend airport there is a church fairly close to the side of the runway. Best thing for LBA is to adjust the ils and touchdown zone for more landing length.

Whether you believe it or not I can assure you it would as it would interfere with the ILS. I have been told by several ATC staff and at least two airport management that it would have to be removed as there has to be a given width either side with no obtructions, and the side of the cemetery nearest the runway is within the restricted area.

The old road that runs round the side of the cemetery must have some bearing on the airport curtilage as many years ago there were some No Parking signs on post which were above the height of the cemetery wall, and the highways department were requested to reduce the height of the said post or one of the airlines would refuse to land! Which airline I can't remember for sure, but Brittania may have been the one.

The bushes and trees on the embankment between the cemetery and road, and between the road and airport boundary fence, are cut back regularly so they don't go above a set height. Nothing to do with spotters having a good view! It's to prevent problems with the airport's equipment, presumably the ILS.

They moved an entire hillside at Toncontin in Honduras!

Flatten the chevin, will make it an easier walk 🙂

Imagine trying to flatten the chevin. It would be great for the airport but I'd suspect ALOT of backlash from certain folk.

When stood at the cemetery rd viewing point looking towards otley chevin the hill does not look a threat to aircraft but when stood on top of otley chevin looking down towards the airport that's when you can really see the issue as the aircraft fly down the hillside! How much of the hill would need to be chopped off? lol

Quite a bit. It's not so much the hill, it's the impact on the ILS glideslope and the fact that the CAA won't approve Cat 3 with the necessary 3.5 degree glideslope. I presume they have similar issues, or worse, at many airports surrounded by hills , mountains or tall buildings. In the UK , London City springs to mind.

Heads Up!

For some weird reason, my days off work tend to involve being out of my flat by 5am and not getting back until 10pm. Back to work and the regular "fix" of 7.40am to 7.15pm hours
Heatwave Mk2 next week?
Some explosive weather build-ups currently in the North of England. What is it like where you are?
LBA: B737-300 G-GDFK empty down to Paris at 16:15 to operate the return LS268 back to Leeds 20:00 ETA where it will then operate the delayed LS265 to Malaga 20:40ETD
LBA: Albastar B737-800 EC-MUB positioning in tommorow afternoon from Gatwick 15:45 to operate a charter to Lourdes/Tarbes on Friday afternoon 14:00 AP7721 STC
I don't believe I am quite covering enough roles at work. Its now 4 on a bad day, 5 on a good day and there is scope for a 6th and 7th role. Still on minimum pay but had the biggest payrise in the company,
