Guys

Sorry, but this is going well off topic. All the above are about Aer Lingus from DSA/MME and the quickest way to get to the USA, which isn't really anything much to do with LBA and Ryanair.

[textarea]Lift for airport as Ryanair plans new routes

BUDGET airline Ryanair is planning to launch more routes out of Leeds-Bradford International Airport once its new base at the airport is up and running.

The news came yesterday as the airline said it had slashed average fares to a record low as it steps up the battle for recession-hit business.

Ryanair will open its new Leeds-Bradford base on March 25 with 14 new routes, which will operate in addition to the three existing routes to Dublin, Barcelona and Alicante.

Ryanair's deputy head of sales and marketing Dara Brady said that once the 14 new routes are running, it has plans for more.

"We see great potential for Leeds-Bradford, it's a stepping stone for the region," he said. "We will see further routes coming down the line – we see plenty of scope for new destinations. We are seeing a strong appetite for low fares from Leeds-Bradford customers."

The airline said its decision to cut prices to an average £26 in the last three months of 2009 helped it boost passenger numbers, which grew 14 per cent to 16 million.

Ryanair posted narrower losses of £9.5m in the third quarter, down 90 per cent on last year's £88.8m loss.

Fuel costs fell 37 per cent in the quarter, while average fares dropped by 12 per cent. The airline said fares had dropped as a result of the recession, price promotions and currency fluctuations.

Chief executive Michael O'Leary is slashing fares to attract price-conscious passengers and put pressure on competitors in the recession.

"The environment out there is, from Ryanair's perspective, great, because it's awful," said Mr O'Leary. "It's really difficult out there, but we're doing remarkably well because this is the time when the lowest cost producer wins."

Takings from extra products and services grew more slowly than passenger numbers at six per cent, as customers avoided excess baggage costs.

Ryanair deputy chief executive Michael Cawley said some passengers are spending less on extras like coffees and teas on board.

He said ancillary revenue rates had increased every year for 14 years, but added this "cannot continue" and having risen to above 20 per cent of total sales, these are now predicted to steady at around a fifth of turnover.

Over the first nine months of its financial year, the firm said fares were higher than expected at £29.80. This was driven by strong demand in Germany, France and Spain, where the firm did not need to reduce prices.

But it said the situation in the UK and Ireland remains weak, with regional airports suffering and fares heavily discounted to stimulate demand.

"We flew as many people, but we earned less revenue in doing it," said Mr Cawley.

He said this was partly down to weaker economic conditions and partly because of higher taxes in the UK and Ireland.

Despite the continuing problems in these markets, Mr Cawley is optimistic for Ryanair and said the firm had "turned the corner in demand".

Passenger growth is now expected to slow to six per cent in 2013 from as much as 20 per cent in the year to March 2008.

It plans to launch more than 200 new routes by the end of this summer although it expects between seven and 10 per cent to fail.

The firm now expects to make a full-year profit in the region of £239m

Fantastic news for LBA. I wonder how many MORE and which routes they will turn out to be? (I still have money on HHN) :) This would no doubt lead to a further aircraft being based here...

Good news overall, but I fear that DUS will be put at risk as I can see Ryanair trying to compete by flying to the 'other' Dusseldorf airport which is nowhere near Dusseldorf. I wouldn't mind a flight from LBA to Hahn as that shouldn't really compete and opens up that area of Germany a bit.

Ryanair.
Yes Hahn would be good for LBA. Flew from Edinburgh recently to Hahn departing at 6.30am on a cold sleeting morning and the flight was nearly full, but interestingly had the feeling that many were doing what we were doing that is connecting to other flights. Several Spanish on board for instance. Therefore the same could be happening from LBA too. Having said that the area around Hahn is well worth visiting. So I would imagine that Hahn is one of the routes under serious consideration from LBA. Hope so.

Further to Aviador post which he quoted the Yorkshire Posts artical this morning the Bradford Telegraph and Argus evening paper carried this artical tonight.

Flights to Nantes and Montpellier are said to be doing well for forward booking and are looking into developing the potential of Malta, which has strong links with the UK. The artical also states that Ryanair furture expansion maybe towards the East of Europe, eg Poland and so on.

Expansion planned to services to Eastern Europe from airport

Bradford’s large Polish community could play a key role in further expansion of flights at Leeds-Bradford International Airport.

An executive of budget airline Ryanair, which is establishing a new base at Yeadon, said its flights to Cracow could expand by providing a convenient link to family and friends in Eastern Europe for local residents of Polish descent.

Dara Brady, deputy head, sales and marketing, at Ryanair, hoped that the district’s Polish population of around 30,000 would provide a basis for expanding the Cracow service along with other Eastern European routes.

He said: “We believe there’s plenty of scope to develop these routes. We’re also seeing strong demand for Nantes and Montpellier flights and will be developing the potential of Malta, which has strong links with the UK.”

Ryanair is transferring its main Northern base from Manchester to LBIA in March. The move will help add an extra one million passengers at LBIA and will potentially create around 1,000 jobs.

Mr Brady met airport chiefs to prepare for the move, which is partly driven by lower airport fees at Yeadon as well as the prospect of attracting extra passengers from the major conurbations of West Yorkshire by providing a wider choice of regular services.

Tony Hallwood, LBIA commercial director, said Ryanair’s new base and expanded operation at Yeadon would play a key role in supporting economic regeneration.

“It will help us to attract more passengers and be part of our ambitious plans to upgrade and expand our facilities. It should also mean fewer people needing to drive across the M62 to connect with flights – which will help to reduce Co2 emissions from cars.”

Ryanair is progressing with its plans for LBIA after predicting better annual profits after a sharp fall in fuel costs helped it narrow its quarterly losses.

Ryanair reported losses of £9.6m in the three months to December 31, from £88.8m in the same period a year earlier.

Fuel costs were down 37 per cent in the quarter, while average fares dropped 12 per cent.

The carrier, which said it has benefited in the recession as its competitors struggled, aims to increase passenger numbers by ten per cent to 73 million in 2011 as it moves into routes vacated by its rivals..

Ryanair, which launched a series of low promotional fares, said passenger numbers rose 14 per cent to 16 million.

The airline said fares had dropped in the period due to the recession, price promotions and currency fluctuations between the pound and the euro.

[textarea]Airline spreads wings in France

Ryanair is launching for new routes from Leeds-Bradford Airport to France from next month.

The budget airline will be operating services to Montpellier, Carcassonne, Nantes and Limoges from March 25. It is the first time there will be direct flights to these destinations.

Tony Hallwood, commercial director at Leeds-Bradford Airport, said the new routes to four different French regions opened up a range of new leisure and business opportunities.

"France is the number one overseas holiday destination from the UK and we are thrilled to be able to offer these exciting new services."

It is also hoped that the flights will attract more French visitors to Yorkshire.

Lynne Walder, who has lived near Montpellier for several years, said: "I have family in West Yorkshire so it is great for me that there is now a direct flight."

Nothing we didn't already know but this is in the YEP today. Nothing wrong with a good bit of PR though.

I thought we might try something fun and completely different for once.

Seen its March the 1st 2010 and with it been only a short time now until Ryanair.com open there new base here at LBA on March the 25th I thought it might be good to start a daily count down.

So today is

24 days to go

Is Ryanair duplicating any of the routes from LBA currently operated by Jet2?

Yes they are competeing on the following routes.

Alicante, Faro, Ibiza, Malaga, Murcia, Palma, Pisa & Venice against Jet2 and some of the tour operators. Dont forget though ryanair will be flying to the like of Barcelona-Gerona and Venice Treviso which are in the middle of no-where while Jet2 fly into the main gateway airports at Barcelona El Prat and Venice Marco Polo.

Jet2 have also dropped there Krakow service becasue Ryanair are to operate that route while thomas Cook have also dropped there weekly Malta flight due to Ryanair doing it 2 times weekly.

It's not Barcelona, no, but you can hardly say it's in the middle of nowhere. I found it very convenient when visiting the Costa Brava last year, with good bus links.

Nice idea Lbaspotter. Such a huge event deserves a countdown!

As for Gerona vs Barcelona, both serve completely different areas and It was naughty of Ryanair to call it Barcelona when they first opened their base there.

A couple of years back I flew to Barcelona with the family. Other members of the family flew into Gerona instead of Barcelona. We were staying at a hotel in Calella on the Costa Brava (about 5 miles south of Blanes and Lloret de Mar. We found it was actually quicker getting to Calella from Barcelona than from Gerona.

I wonder what we will see for winter 2010/11. 3rd aircraft would be nice for starters. Routes such as Berlin Schonefeld and Frankfurt Hahn would be nice.

49 trips undertaken last year. First done this year which was to North Wales where surprisingly the only slippery surfaces were in Conwy with the castle and it's walls closed due to the ice.
