Yes indeed. Does anyone have any past experience of when Ryanair start new bases as to how things generally pan out? I am thinking in terms of when will the aircraft get positioned in etc.

To the person who said Girona airport is in the middle of nowhere, it is fine for the costa brave & it only takes an hour by regular cheap bus service to get to the city of barcelona! the same time it takes to get from heathrow to london city centre!

Furthermore you can fly to Girona with Ryanair for a fraction of the cost that jet2 charge to Barcelona airport and even with the bus ticket save well over £100.

I think you need to do a little bit more research before making claims. Ryanair offer a great service and dont deal with BCN airport for a reason, busy & expensive. They use Girona and pass on the saving to their customers.

Do ryanair have offices/a crew room at lba now then. how many ryanair staff will there be as opposed to Servisair?

Yes Ryanair have their own Crew area, as do bmi, KLM, eastern airways and of course Jet2. There will be less Ryanair staff than Servisair staff. LBA will only be a crew base.

No where for Eastern anymore, not a base!

Great to see new growth at LBA but for some reason I am a bit concerned that if it works well the airport could end up being a "one airline" fingers crossed it wont.

Conversely, Ryanair coming in and if it goes well expanding would be a counterpoint to Jet2 who were themselves effectively turning LBA into a one-airline airport.

This will always be a conundrum for airport operators.

An airline like Jet2 turns up at an airport like LBA and transforms the place. For the most part it is popular with punters and operates regular scheduled services never previously enjoyed at the airport.

Other airports have similar stories with easyJet or Flybe, for example.

It' great for the airport and its punters but there is a danger that if the golden egg airline is suddenly no more, because it has gone bust or decided to move elsewhere, the airport might be just up the road from Queer Street.

So a much needed second significant presence arrives in the form of an aggressive airline like Ryanair. It's fine so long as the routes don't overlap with the incumbent but some will because they are inherently popular and potentially lucrative.

There is then the danger that the presumably long term and stable ralationship between LBA and Jet2 might suffer BUT the airport will have two major players instead of one, albeit the original major may be slightly less major at the airport than it once was.

This scenario is being played out at other airports such as Liverpool and Bristol, both big provincial easyJet bases but in recent years infiltrated more and more by Ryanair.

Exeter Airport, much smaller than LBA it is true, is a one airline airport of mega proportions. Apart from a once a day Twin Otter from Scilly Skybus its only scheduled airline is Flybe.

Flybe exercises such control over that airport that it regularly weighs in with its views regarding the operation of Exeter.

For example, It didn't like the original preferred bidder when the council put up EXT for sale and said so publicly and threw a wobbly when the airport fire brigade threatened strike action.

On both occasions it made public statements about reducing services or even pulling out altogether. In the past 18 months EXT has suffered horrendous drops in passenger numbers because Flybe has axed both routes and rotations. Because they have no other scheduled airline EXT can do nothing about it.

I think that a second significant based player is very important to an airport even if it is someone like Ryanair and the original based airline has its nose put out of joint. To me it's the lesser evil to the situation at a place like Exeter that is effectively in thrall to its only based scheduled airline.

I wish I could explain my feelings as well as that, yes thats exactly what I mean ( honestly ).

Hopefully both airlines with carve out there part of the market and we will all live happily ever after....

I believe that will happen. The routes that they are both operating are underserved from LBA and every year we have lost thousands of passengers to airports such as MAN and LPL because passengers couldn't get seats, or prices they like on Jet2. Had Jet2 concentrated solely on development at LBA, some of that leakage might have stopped, but their expansion into other airports has resulted in them having insufficient aircraft at LBA to operate additional flights at peak times, and with less 757's their ability to upgrade to a larger aircraft will also be reduced at LBA. Ryanair will bring to LBA many passengers who would otherwise have flown with them from MAN/LPL in the past.

Beyond the obvious routes such as PMI, AGP, FAO etc, Ryanair appear to be targeting routes which Jet2 would have been unlikely to operate. Jet2 are also clearly moving away from City routes towards Sun, Sea, Sand, & Ski routes, largely in connection with their Jet2Holidays brand. That leaves the way clear for Ryanair to operate to those places that Jet2 are not interested in, and there are many of them.

Provided Ryanair don't set out to deliberately harm Jet2 operations at LBA (just because they think they can) I believe there is room for both at LBA, and still room for expansion by Flybe too, especialy if BMi finally do the decent thing and disappear to leave their routes for an airline that puts more effort into it.

Hi, I was born and lived in B36 for a long time - Lindale Avenue, just around the corner from Hodge Hill Comp.
I just noticed your postcode on a post.

Do you still live in the area?

49 trips undertaken last year. First done this year which was to North Wales where surprisingly the only slippery surfaces were in Conwy with the castle and it's walls closed due to the ice.
