I would love to see Jet2 operate to DUB in competition with Ryanair. If they can make Belfast work, they should surely have no problem with Dublin? Yet it is a destination they have never seemed interested in, apart from ad hoc charter work.

I would have thought an Aer Lingus ATR72 morning departure to Dublin to connect with EI to New York would work better. The early arrival in Dublin from NY would also connect with an early dep to LBA before returning to Dublin.

I am sure DSA would be delighted if that happened, (NOT!) since they have just lost exactly that type of operation due to poor passenger loads. I think we also need to remember that Ryanair have shares in Aer Lingus, so is the airline likely to start up a route which challenges Ryanair operations and profits at LBA?

I would love another airline to do DUB from LBA, and Aer Lingus would be great. Whether or not it will happen - we will have to wait and see - but I think LBA are possibly victims of the ongoing war of words between Ryanair and Dublin Airport Authority, and it is to be hoped that someone comes in to pick up the passengers lost.

Taken from another forum:

A new Ryanair service to Lanzarote from Leeds Bradford has been announced today. It will compete against both Jet2 and TCX.

Maybe Heather or someone else can remember, was Aer Lingus the first airline to provide a regular scheduled jet service from LBA in the 1960's with the 737-200?

I understand that is correct.

Aer Lingus were the first airline to start scheduled jet services. In fact they remained the only
regular jet operator into LBA for many years. I would venture to guess they started jet operations in the early 1970's.

The BAC 1-11 replaced their Viscounts. The 1-11's were mainly used into Leeds but some services each week were operated by 737's and also 737 combi's.

Aer Lingus started their jet services into LBA shortly after the Government of the day turned down the runway extension application and against a backdrop of gloom and doom for the airport. There was talk of closure at the time, or a move to Church Fenton, but then out of the blue Aer Lingus announced they were replacing Viscount 800's with a mixture of 737-200's and 1-11's. The first one to operate was EI-ASC, a 737-200, which was shown in the YEP climbing steeply off the old runway 33 (as it was then). I would suspect it was around 1968, but I would need to check. I still have the newspaper cutting showing that first take off, but it is in the loft and its rather chilly up there right now!

The first charter airline to use jet equipment out of LBA was some years later, when Air Malta started flying also using 737-200's, closely followed by Britannia Airways with the same equipment.

Anyway, this is all making me feel rather OLD!!

Lanzarote now on sale (with Ryanair that is) Tues and Sat from 9th April, using a Lanzarote based aircraft. Jet2 are usually Thurs and Sun with their flights, so fits in quite nicely

I would rather though that they had picked Gran Canaria than Lanzarote, since we are very much underserved on that route and they would have had it all to themselves rather than competing with Jet2 again. I guess it just shows how many people are going there now though!

Ryanair's twice weekly flights operating Tuesdays and Saturdays from Leeds/Bradford to Arrecife-Lanzarote will commence from April 9th 2011 as follows.

Tuesdays
Arrecife-LBA 14:40 - 18:55 FR2047
LBA-Arrecife 19:20 - 23:30 FR2048
Saturdays
Arrecife-LBA 07:15 - 11:30 FR2047
LBA-Arrecife 11:55 - 16:50 FR2048

So no major announcement then. No surprise really but it's probably just as well he didn't come today because he might have expected to see the terminal construction underway. Whoever is at fault with the delay, we don't need another George Best scenario whereby Ryanair pullout because of the councils inability push through a runway extension there.

We can't complain at the addition of Lanzarote. This at least should ensure that more people fly from LBA to ACE rather than crossing the Pennines.

Hi all

Going back to the Aer Lingus comments they were the first to bring in a jet airliner to LBA EI-ANE BAC 1-11 was chartered by Leeds United to bring them back from a european match in March 1966.

I remember that picture White Heather of the EI B737 and I think it was 1970 if my memory serves me well.

You may well be right about that Nordjet 414, and yes, I remember the Leeds Utd FC charter. They actually used Aer Lingus for their charters quite frequently when playing in Europe. I have been trying to find some information about when the jet operations to Dublin commenced, but so far no success, so I may have to venture into the loft and brave the (frozen to death) spiders, to find my newpaper cutting.

Anyway, back to Ryanair...........................

Is there any word on what the announcement on Thursday was to have been, and has it been rescheduled?

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
