1989 LBA - Knock twice weekly (Tuesday and Thursday) on a 1-11 FR492 / 493

Crikey, the flight codes as well, is that from memory?

Hi Bobleeds

Your'e definitely not wrong. Ryanair did operate from LBA to Knock using a 1-11, some years before they came back to operate the DUB route with a 732. The Knock service didn't last long and seemed to be full of priests and nuns on the odd occasions I saw it come in to LBA.

Probably before Father Teds time but Father Jack will remember.Well, maybe not actually.

Unfortunately not! I do have many old timetables etc from the 80's and the 90's so happy to help if anyone requires specifics about long forgotten services and schedules.

Flew with Ryanair this week to Weeze and back, good load there on Monday, seemed about 3/4 full, less coming back today, maybe around 1/2 full. It's a nice little airport Weeze, but only seems to be Ryanair there? Anyway if you are thinking of flying LBA to Dusseldorf, I'd still say that Jet2 is a better alternative, but for Duisburg or East Holland LBA - NRN with Ryanair seems like a good option.

Knock now looks to have been taken off sale after 30th Oct.

Seems to be part of a wider reshuffle of the LBA timetable compared to the first release of winter at the start of MAy

Knock, withdrawn
Fuertenventura, Monday flight withdrawn
Weeze retimed into the slots previously used by the Knock service and all flights now operating from the LBA based aircraft
Karkow retimed
Sunday Treviso retimed
Arrecife retimed, but still on ACE based aircraft

There is now a free aircaft for most of Monday, all of Wednesday, most of Saturday and most of Sunday. I guess we'll have to see whether this is part of the winter downsizing mentioned in the Ryanair results this week, or an indication of more routes to come. One observation is that it now looks as if FAO may come on sale afterall as the booking engine is now indicating that schedules are about to be loaded.

At todays Consultative Committee meeting, it was intimated that all airlines, including Ryanair, are now having to axe flights that would normally be operated and be profitable, entirely due to the continuing high oil prices. Airlines are reaching the point whereby the costs are not sustainable, and they need to either put up fares or drop the flights. It will be the marginal flights that are dropped - those with the lowest yields. I guess that these changes, in particular the axing of Knock/Ireland West/Connaught, are part of that process. Perhaps the dropping of Malta previously for the winter was for the same reasons.

Faro is now bookable for the winter. Monday and Friday with Faro based aircraft, so the gaps on the LBA schedule remain.

Talking of Faro.

The Summer 2011 schedule to Faro from Leeds Bradford has been increased to 5 weekly.

The extra flight will to start with run on a Saturday. This flight started yesterday and will run until Saturday 25th June and will operate to the following schedule.

Arr LBA: 11:35
Dep LBA: 12:00

From Friday 1st July there will be 2 flights to Faro on Fridays. The new flight will run until 29th July and operate to the following schedule.

Arr LBA: 10:20
Dep LBA: 10:45

The whole of August returns to 4x Weekly. Then September starts again with 5x Weekly (using the same times as May/June 2011) and will run like this until the end of the Summer season..

Although only a small increase, good news for the airport.

Hope this makes sense.

Hi

Just a little reminder that Ryanair have now gone back to operating the LBA - Dublin route twice daily on Tuesdays and Wednesdays so now back up to 13x weekly.

The morning Tuesday flight is now operated by a Dublin based aircraft while the Wednesday morning flight is operated by a LBA based aircraft which then gose onto operate the Palma flight.

Could that be a case of Ryanair caving in to public demand??!! My goodness!!

In all seriousness though, the spat with the Dublin Airports authority is ridiculous and it is clear who is losing out in that battle. MoL would do well to just let that one slip away quietly. Perhaps the situation at Shannon airport is more in their hands as they are very much the key player but they absolutely cannot afford to lose their market position at Dublin. All they are acheiving with their argument at Dublin is a loss of revenue and DAA don't seem to have the slightest concern for that.

The statistics show that Dublin is a key market for LBA and it has to be one of the better yield performers out of LBA for Ryanair.

For several years, DUB was the busiest route out of LBA. It has surprised me that when Ryanair dropped flights, nobody else tried to pick them up. I would have loved to see Aer Lingus (using the Aer Arann ATR72) come in to compete with Ryanair, perhaps with a daily flight. I am certain that there are loads of DUB passengers who would love to fly on an EI flight rather than FR given the choice.

It is said, Ryanair don't like to use the 2 airbidges because they are too slow.
I was on the flight yesterday that landed just after the Thomson 767.
The 767 was holding in the loop, we parked on stand 11,the 767 on stand 8.
We parked first and the doors were opened. The 767 was just pulling in. I was at the front and by the time I had reached the staircase, at least half of the Thomson passengers had poured out in front of us.
Airbridges load at the correct level.Ryanair pax are subjected to the obstacle course up and down many steps and sometimes up and down the balcony gate and still load through only 1 door of course. So how can airbidges be slower.

White Heather you're not wrong there. I recently worked for Menzies Aviation at MAN mainly on the EI flights. 1 prime example was Emmerdale actor Frank Kelly who flew with EI MAN-DUB weekly if not twice weekly. He told me he would NEVER set foot on a Ryanair aircraft and was happy to pay for a taxi from Leeds to MAN every time he wanted to go home.

Thanks Markietg. I know that Aer Lingus is still very much the airline of choice for the Irish and I do think that if they had a reasonably low fare, with a better quality of service, one flight a day from LBA to DUB would do OK. It would be great to see Aer LIngus back at LBA, particularly since they were one of the first airlines ever to use this airport in the early 60's with their DC3's, progressing then on to the new (at that time) F27 and then Viscounts. They were also the first scheduled airline to operate jet equipment to LBA with a mix of 737-200's and 1-11's. LBA has missed them!!

Sorry guys, I'm far too young to remember Aer Lingus as an airline at LBA, and I have never associated them with LBA. Although, I do agree - with what has been said about many Irish Residents preferring to fly with EI, then I don't see why it wouldn't work. The only problem is, is that they seem very happy at MAN, and we boil down again to whether or not they would want to operate from both airports when, as they see it, they have no point to....

[offtopic]Aer Lingus Regional (Aer Arann in new clothing) to DUB might be more likely than Aer Lingus mainline.

They fly 3 x daily from Bristol to Dublin on the ATR 72 against Ryanair, also 3 x daily. My wife and I used them a few weeks ago even though Ryanair would have been a bit cheaper. The product was good and it was pleasant having our seats assigned at check-in.

If they do turn up at LBA I can recommend them.[/offtopic]

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
