AN AIR fares war is set to break out at Leeds Bradford Airport.

Irish low-cost airline Ryanair on Tuesday revealed plans to invest £85m in the airport, launching 14 new routes across Europe catering for one million new passengers.

Ryanair chief executive Michael O'Leary claims the move – which follows the announcement of a £28m revamp of the airport – will help create and sustain up to 1,000 jobs.

However, many of the new routes mirror ones already being run by Leeds-based Jet2.com.

Mr O'Leary threw down the gauntlet to Jet2.com and flybe.com, which also operates out of Leeds, saying: "We have come to Leeds because it is one of the airports that doesn't really have any of the low cost airlines.

"I know it has a couple masquerading as low cost and I have been told not to criticise any of the current airlines, but it's a fact to say that they charge high fares.

"This (announcement] is nothing but good news for everyone with the exception of a couple of the high fare airlines who are charging fares that are too high. But we will force them all down over the next year.

"If the airport can support three million passengers currently paying high fares then I don't think we will have a problem getting another one million at low fares."

Jet2.com boss Philip Meeson retorted: "He would say that because he doesn't have much else to say. Ryanair pretend to have low fares but there are lots of hidden extras which make the advertised air fares extremely expensive for families in particular who need to take luggage.

"We are sorry that he has not chosen new destinations because we feel we are already meeting demand in that area. Let's see if Ryanair are still here in two years' time."

Airport chief executive John Parkin said the deal with Ryanair, coupled with the forthcoming expansion, would help the airport with its ambition of achieving five million passengers a year.

He added: "This is a vote of confidence in the region and in the airport. It makes Leeds Bradford an important player."

Deputy leader of Leeds City Council Andrew Carter said: "This expansion is extremely welcome in these economic times."

Ryanair will open its Leeds Bradford base – its 11th in the UK and its 34th in Europe – in March 2010.

Its 14 new routes are to Carcassonne, Montpellier, Limoges and Nantes in France, Faro in Portugal, Ibiza, Malaga, Murcia and Palma in Spain, Knock in Ireland, Malta, Krakow in Poland and Pisa and Venice in Italy. Ryanair already flies to Dublin, Alicante and Barcelona. The new routes go on sale on Thursday.

So the gloves are off then. We can sit back and expect a war of words over the coming months between Philip and Michael, who was obviously trying his best to provoke a response yesterday with his comments aimed at Jet2. Whilst Ryanair may be cheaper if you travel light, many LBA passengers are already regular users of Jet2 who undoubtedly offer a better quality of service. Ryanair claim to be the Worlds Favourite Airline - (pinched from BA??). In reality they are one of Europe's most hated by their passengers, but they must do something very right as they keep on pulling the passengers in don't they? They all grumble about the airline, but in the end money does the talking. I think Jet2 will need to look at some of their prices though because when I have checked fares out between LBA and ALC, Ryanair have invariably been cheaper by some margin. I would still fly with Jet2 though if going with my family.

Off topic, Scousefowler s obviously several years out of date regarding his knowledge of the financial state of LUFC, and trying to stir a reaction from LUFC fans (like me - the 'White' bit of my user name might suggest). All I can say is I am not taking the bait. Wrong forum.

LOSS OF 44 WEEKLY FLIGHTS AND 600,000 PASSENGERS FROM OCTOBER

Ryanair, the World’s favourite airline, today (17th Aug) announced that it will switch/close 9 of its 10 Manchester routes to lower cost competitor airports in East Midlands, Leeds Bradford and Liverpool (from 1st Oct) after Manchester Airport refused to lower its charges to reflect the lower fares being paid by passengers in the current recession. This move will result in the loss of 44 weekly Manchester flights, 600,000 passengers p.a. and up to 600 local jobs.

Ryanair had offered Manchester an additional 28 weekly flights and 400,000 new passengers which would have created 400 new jobs if the airport reduced its high charges. Manchester Airport rejected this offer and Ryanair’s Manchester routes to/from Barcelona (Girona), Bremen, Brussels (Charleroi), Cagliari, Dusseldorf (Weeze), Frankfurt (Hahn), Marseille, Milan (Bergamo) and Shannon will cease from 1st October. Passengers affected will be emailed directly by Ryanair and provided with a full refund or the alternative of flying to some destinations from competing, lower cost airports in East Midlands, Leeds Bradford and Liverpool.

Ryanair has recently announced new bases at low cost airports in Leeds Bradford and Porto and will continue to grow routes and traffic at lower cost competitor airports to Manchester such as East Midlands, Leeds Bradford and Liverpool.

Ryanair’s Stephen McNamara said:

“Ryanair continues to lower fares to encourage travel, but with passengers paying lower fares airports must lower their charges – particularly high cost airports like Manchester, London (Stansted) and Dublin. Ryanair had offered new routes, traffic and growth to Manchester Airport but since they prefer to preserve their high cost base than to grow, Ryanair will now switch/close nine Manchester routes to East Midlands, Leeds Bradford and Liverpool from 1st October next resulting in the loss of 600,000 passengers p.a. and up to 600 jobs at Manchester.

yes, it means fewer passengers travelling to MAN for what should be an outbound LBA flight, on a few routes anyway, but does it mean FR are paying pittance to use LBA, which you'd expect they are, and will they drop LBA at a drop of a hat should they get a better offer elsewhere?!

Erm... isn't EMA still part of the MAG group? For that reason wont there fees there be subject to the same conditions as those at Manchester airport? I can't imagine why EMA should be cheaper than Manchester airport, or is EMA at risk of loosing flights as well?

I wonder if LBA can pick up any additional flights because of this announcement?

The BBC news (Radio 2) had this on their news this evening and they said that routes were being switched, and in fact they only mentioned LBA, which nearly made me swerve off the road with shock in view of the routes operated that we could inherit. If this happens it would certainly mean yet more new routes unless our share amounts to Gerona or Dublin which we already have. But there are some tasty routes going from MAN including Brussels, Frankfurt Hahn & Hanover. They also include Shannon though and the latter has already been operated and failed from LBA. An extra DUB rotation daily wouldn't go amiss though.

If we were to get some of the ex MAN routes, they may need to base a 3rd aircraft with us I would imgine. We shouldn't have long to wait to find out as they are switching from 1 October, just 7 weeks away (ish). This could be great news for LBA and terrible news definitely for MAN,

If we do indeed pick up any additional routes it is unlikely to mean any additional based aircraft. All the Manchester flights are currently operated by aircraft from their European bases.

I have been hearing the same at the airport regarding their ex routes coming to us. Examples such as GRO, BGY & SSN may not come to LBA. (GRO because we allready have it, BGY because jet2 do it and SSN because we are getting Knock as of March 10)

They also do Bremen (BRE), Nurenburg (NRN), Frankfurt Hahn (HHN) and Cagliari (CAG). I think these along with Brussels Charleroi and Hanover could be `switched` to LBA?

If we compare MAN traffic for this example, their most traffic destinations are;

1) Irish
2) German
3) Spanish & Canary island's

I think, to say LBA, has only one German connection is a shambles. DUS performs well and im sure their is demand for more such as HHN etc. I will be very surprised personally if FR do not choose to operate HHN from LBA, and/or at least another German destination.

I personally think we will pick up at least one German route and possibly Brussels. We could do with another decent German connection.

How would bmi react/do if Brussels was operated by FR? Not sure on demand currently for the bmi service operated on an ERJ 135/145 - but i don't think i could see FR filling a 189 seater B737-800!

I noticed your post on the Manchester Forum, LH have never even provided a half decent service to FRA from LBA forcing passengers across the Pennines to prop up passenger numbers there. I hope FR can open up LBA to Germany operating to Frankfurt and other routes LH should have operated from LBA over the years. FR hate LH with a passion and I would have thought a counter move by FR at Leeds will almost certainly be on the cards in the next 12 to 18 months.

I agree. The fact that we have only one route to Germany disheartens me. LH should of been an operator at LBA, for a long time now, but now i hope we see FR take what LH should have been doing.

One things for sure, we need to open up Germany from LBA! Does anybody think LH will ever operate services to/from LBA in the future? I think instead of increasing the FRA (main) routes at MAN, why not introduce a service from LBA. Surely using an Airbus A320 at a minimum would be cost effective?

As an exiled Otley chap living down south, I would still consider flying Ryanair from LBA. I have flown regularly to Limoges this year from Luton and even though I have paid small amounts for the flights. On one occasion I parked the car at the airport and it cost me three times the cost of the flight, return taxi fare from home to airport was more than the car park, so I would definately do it as still have family 5mins from Yeadon where I could leave car(and possibly kids!!). One note of caution for anyone travelling back from Limoges is that they are sticklers for bag dimensions and weight as my daughter`s friend found to her cost. Also had to show passport 4 times before actually getting on aircraft
