I was just wondering as on Thursday i heading up to my sisters and i'm in 2 minds whether to go via MAN to do some spotting there which i'll have to take a detour for or stop at BHX which is on the route i'd take normally.

I was just wondering as on Thursday i heading up to my sisters and i'm in 2 minds whether to go via MAN to do some spotting there which i'll have to take a detour for or stop at BHX which is on the route i'd take normally.

The best two options for a short stint are either on top of the Elmdon site car park or Sheldon Country Park (weather permitting).

The Elmdon car park is accessed directly off the A45 and has pretty decent views over a large chunk of the buildings as well as arrivals and departures no matter which runway is in use. The top floor is blocked off for vehicles but pedestrian access is fine, although if it's raining level 7 offers good views and is in the dry, I'd put a couple of pounds in the machine as there have been NCP patrols in recent weeks.

Sheldon Country Park is a great spot if 15 is in use as arrivals are very low directly overhead and departures are not too far away. If 33 is in use it's not as good with departures already pretty high overhead and arrivals turning off at the bravo intersection. That said if you are only watching and not photographing it's still a decent spot. There is parking available on Hazeldene Road with direct access to the park through a gate, about a 2 min walk.

The viewing area in car park 5 is also an excellent spot but to avoid a hefty parking bill the best way to get there is park by Marston Green Station and get the train one stop to Birmingham International. That really depends on how much time you have.

Just have a few pound coins to hand in case a patrol pops by. From their website the prices are 1 hour £2.00 1 to 2 hours £3.50 3 to 5 hours £5.00 5 to 8 hours £7.50 8 to 24 hours £10.00.

I forgot to mention that it also has great views over the MAEL apron but I'm not sure what's in there at the moment.
