Turkish Airlines Increase Flights From Birmingham Airport


Turkish Airlines is increasing the number of flights between Birmingham and Istanbul from seven to ten flights a week!

Turkish Airlines is going from strength to strength at Birmingham Airport, increasing the number of flights to Istanbul from seven to ten flights a week, offering even more choice and greater connectivity than ever before.

To celebrate the expansion, Turkish Airlines has presented the Airport with a giant model aircraft which now hangs proudly from the ceiling of the Airport’s International Pier.

The extra flights on Monday, Thursday and Sunday offer even more opportunity for onward connections to the Middle East, the Far East and Africa, as well as providing greater flexibility for those wanting to travel from Birmingham to Istanbul.

Martyn Lloyd, Commercial Director at Birmingham Airport, said: “Over the last four years, we have seen more and more people flying with Turkish Airlines, so they can connect to over 200 onward destinations via Istanbul Ataturk Airport.

“This increase in the number flights per week is great news for our leisure and business passengers, who now have even more choice and flexibility for long-haul connectivity from Birmingham.”

Selim Ozturk, General Manager for Turkish Airlines at Birmingham, said: “We are extremely proud of what we have achieved at Birmingham Airport since we began operating flights from here back in 2008.

“The demand has been incredibly strong from the very beginning, which is why we have decided to increase the number of flights between Birmingham and Istanbul from seven to ten flights per week.

“To celebrate this landmark occasion, we are delighted to present the airport with an impressive model aircraft, which now hangs from their International Pier for passengers to admire before they fly out.”

I presume a significant number of passengers fly on to more distant destinations from Turkey. If so, is it having any effect on Emirates?

Turkish had a very slow start with some horrendously low loads, indeed many people were questioning how long the route could last but a massive advertising campaign saw loads pick up and they have been growing at a healthy rate ever since. Emirates did take a hit, and I'm sure Turkish was a contributing factor, with loads dropping into the 70%'s but there are signs of a recovery with loads now getting back into the 80%'s again (although still slightly down on last year).

Has Turkish ever managed 90%+ loads on average?

I can see it becoming double daily soon.

Load factors are consistently 75-85%.

The route is growing nicely with lots of upgrades to 739's and A321's, if it continues to do well expect double daily within 18-24 months.

I didn't know Yeovil were ever sponsored by flybe.

Logically flybe sponsored teams where they had a base at the local airport:

Birmingham city
Norwich
Exeter city
Southampton

Aberdeen also springs to mind but I'm afraid my knowlege of Scottish football is very limited...

Flybe sponsored Birmingham for four seasons 2003-2007, after the shirt deal ended there were still Flybe hoardings all around the stadium. I've not been for nearly three years now so I'm not sure if it's still the case.

It has been noted that Turkish Airlines seems to be doing well on the routes it currently serves from the UK. Interestingly there was something on BBC news earlier today regarding huge expansion at Istanbul's airport with a third runway planned.

Good news if it does happen. Turkish appear to be doing very well with the 739 a regular visitor now.

It would be nice if they were able to upgrade at some point in the future but I'm sure where they're at at the moment is fine.

It's not a true replacement in anyway shape or form. I've flown on both types the 900 was just like the 800 but with 4-5 extra rows of seats nothing much. When the 757 finally leaves our sky's airlines really will miss it the most....
