BIRMINGHAM AIRPORT WINS UK BEST AIRPORT

The achievement for best airport handling more than 10 million passengers a year, was presented at a glitzy awards event in London on Monday evening (29/10/18). It recognises excellence and achievement across a whole range of areas, including: retail, security, operations, facilities, community relations, environmental awareness and customer service.
Simon Richards, the Airport’s Acting Managing Director, said:
“We are delighted to be presented with this accolade by the AOA, beating off stiff competition from other major UK airports in our category.
“We are particularly delighted that the award was judged by our airline customers, who have appreciated our progress and chosen to recognise it with this award.
“Credit must go to our employees and partner companies for the huge amount of hard work that has gone into improving our processes and customer experience over the last year.”

The Airport Operators Association is the trade body representing more than 50 UK Airports in the UK and the views of UK airports to Government, parliament and regulators to secure policy outcomes that help deliver their mission.
Chief Executive of the AOA, Karen Dee said:
“Aviation is a UK success story and our vibrant and innovative work is globally leading. The AOA Annual Awards showcased just a sample of that best-in-kind work, including around improving efficiency, reducing the impact of aviation on the environment and delivering an ever-improving passenger experience.”

Cue the professional whingers on social media who have nothing good to say (I need to stop reading the comments although I have replied).

Based on my own experiences it's thoroughly deserved. :)

Heard something rather interesting about BHX in my lecture at university today, my lecturer used to work in management and ops there and he said that when VS initially bought the A346 they approached BHX and asked about it being a diversion from LHR, but the airport had to turn them down as at the time the infrastructure couldn't handle the A346. They obviously will be able to today with the A380 ops, but it got me thinking, could it have harmed BHX's prospects for more long haul routes and flights in the early 2000s. An interesting one to ponder

Hi Ashwo99

I believe that there is an issue that is specific to the A346. Basically the distance between the nosewheel and main wheels is so long that the aircraft can't use standard radius turns on taxiways. Even though BHX added fillets to some taxiway turns in order to improve A380 operations, I believe that this still precludes A346's from operating at BHX.
As the A346 was never produced in vast numbers it is unlikely that BHX would go to the expense of upgrading the taxiways for a possible occasional diversion.
Hope that is of interest - might be worth asking your lecturer about.

Hope you're enjoying Uni life - I loved it!

Regards

Kevin

A340-600s still cannot operate from BHX

If you consult page 11. Section 4. Warnings F) on this document from the NATS website

http://www.ead.eurocontrol.int/eadb...FXUS/EN/AIP/AD/EG_AD_2_EGBB_en_2018-11-08.pdf

It states "Operators should note that Birmingham Airport is unable to accept A340-600 aircraft due to limitation on taxiway curves."

This caused quite a stir on a certain Facebook group a while ago as one member was convinced BHX could handle the A340-600 but this document clearly states otherwise.

Its a shame really, would love to see one at BHX but as Kevin says it wouldn't be worth the airport's investment as visits would be few and far between.

I've read on the Manchester forum that Ryanair want to add more based aircraft there but have run out of space at T3. At both MAN and BHX, Flybe and Ryanair share terminals.

I don't know if Ryanair are still interested in adding more from BHX (could this be why they have stagnated recently at EMA?), but it seems unfortunately that losing based aircraft from Flybe would be the only way to enable some serious Ryanair growth here.

A positive story from October record numbers , at last ! The item is positioned as the start of the push towards meeting the strategic growth numbers issued recently in the plans. From this month onwards, the Monarch impact should become a positive when comparing to the previous year so the management doesn't need to hide the monthly stats under a bushel !! Having said that, I wonder why its taken them 3 weeks to report such positive news?

Birmingham Airport Experiences best October on record
Birmingham Airport has reported its highest ever recorded passenger figures for the month of October 2018. The Airport welcomed 1,141,864 passengers through its doors – a 6.1% increase on last year and the overall best October to date.
The top three most visited destinations in October were; Dublin, Amsterdam and Dubai. The destinations which experienced the highest passenger growth in the month of October versus last year include Venice (+98.7), Krakow (+95.1%), Naples (+83%) and Prague (+52.5%).

Simon Richards, Acting Managing Director at Birmingham Airport said: “Recording our best October in the Airport’s 79-year history signifies an exciting period for us. We have recently released our draft Master Plan which explains how the Airport plans to grow passenger numbers and deliver improved facilities for our airlines and passengers over the next 15 years, and these figures show that we are moving in the right direction.
“We have already made significant investments across the terminal and the surrounding areas of the Airport including an improved security search area, a new on-site hotel and more car parking. This investment has recently earned us the title of the *UK’s Best Airport for airports above 10 million passengers as well as the most family friendly airport in the UK and Ireland. Looking forward to 2019, we will continue to place customer service at the heart of everything we do.”

If several sources are to be believed it's been no room at the inn for a while now when it comes to Ryanair which, on the face of it, seems ludicrous when we have so many missing routes.

Highest October ever, a great achievement given the circumstances and a huge debt of thanks must be owed to Jet2.

That said with so many missing destinations and the list of unserved routes getting ever longer I find it hard to celebrate numbers alone :(

I agree Ray. They really do need a leader - it's remarkable how the absence of one, or possession of a poor one, has such an unsung influence on a company. News always emphasizes the successes - witness our local Stoke girl from Bet365 this week.

Great to see BHX back in postitive territory (y)

However as others have said we need more routes and more airlines to be attracted to the airport for it to be a great success. This city of ours deserves nothing less.

Lets hope the management have something up there sleeves.

Evening guys, hope everybody is ok.

Im sorry to ask but i had a question given to me regarding the Draft master plan and i dont know the answer so just asking if anybody can help.

'National Air Traffic Services (NATS) currently restrict the number of flights from our runway during the early morning departures peak throughout the summer because there is not enough airspace capacity in the south-east.'

Is it just BHX that is restricted like this because if it is it must be costing BHX a fortune?

Whenever I have experienced delays on early morning flights out of Birmingham the reason given by the flight deck is almost always due to ATC restrictions.

I guess there is no easy answer.

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
