Some great photos there, Ray!

Note in the 6th one down, the runway is designated '34'. Shows how the magnetic field has changed since then.
I love the three Viscount 700's in a row - note the oval doors.
Picture 17 of the terminal frontage with the Ford Anglia (my Grandad had one of those) parked outside is how I remember the terminal being when I first used to visit as a kid. Although that photo probably pre-dates my visits by a few years.
The photo of the ATC (23) is of interest to me as it's dated 1988. I was 14 then and wanted to be an Air Traffic Controller (I thought I'd be able to look out of the window at planes all day!). I remember at that age, I wrote to the airport and they arranged for me and my Dad to visit the control tower one Sunday morning. I was amazed to watch a JAT B707 land followed by a JAT 727. The reason of interest with the date, is that would have been the setup on my visit.

The link below has a nice trip down memory lane :)

Fascinating pictures! Many thanks for the link.

Nothing changes. One of the pictures is of a protest against the airport's expansion in 1979.

Anna aero have an article about the 80th birthday celebrations but it did have something of interest.

For S19 Ryanair will be the largest carrier from BHX in terms of seat capacity with Jet2 second. Both have overtaken Flybe (or have they just slipped back) putting them in third place.

According to OAG Schedules Analyser, Ryanair is the largest carrier at Birmingham by departing seat capacity in S19, with Jet2 in only its third year at the airport climbing to second place ahead of the now Virgin Atlantic-owned Flybe.

Great photos.

I hope that they return the Elmdon terminal back to its original splendour and get rid of the upper floor glazing which infills under the old 2 and 3 floor overhangs. Return it from picture 19 to that in pictures 1 and 14.

Lovely tribute.

And the last time I went past the old Croydon airport, it looked in very good nick as the entrance to a business park.

I remember going to a wedding there as a child and the view over the balcony on a summer night was magnificent.

Just a pity there wouldn't be a lot of business to convert it to a hotel, with early check-in, bar and restaurant facilities

Kev re your comments sbout ATC that Picture of ATC shows Peter Fothergill who was one of my friends mates from his years at Manchester where I think he retired

Given yesterday's news re Wizz and the apparent restarting of Amritsar as posted on the Air India thread perhaps BHX is beginning to turn the corner he says optomisticly, also Laudermotion start in October to Vienna.

As said on another thread there are some interesting whispers begin to emerge, how much truth is behind them remains to be seen but I hope that the corner has been turned and the new direction that they are potentially heading in is a positive one.

Time will tell.

Airport hotel sold in multimillion-pound deal
Holiday-Inn-Birmingham-Airport-500x333.jpg

The Holiday Inn Birmingham Airport – NEC has been sold off a guide price of £33m.
JLL advised Crest Hotels on the sale of the 241 bedroom hotel to 11 Hospitality.
The hotel offers on-site parking, 14 meeting and conference rooms as well as leisure facilities and Marcos restaurant and bar facilities.
The hotel will continue to operate subject to a franchise agreement with InterContinental Hotel Group (IHG) under the Holiday Inn brand.
Gavin Wright, director, hotels and hospitality at JLL, said: “We are thrilled to have completed on this high profile sale. The Holiday Inn has benefited from significant investment and development since Crest Hotels acquired it in 2005.
“Birmingham offers strong investment opportunities, supported by the forthcoming Commonwealth Games in 2022 and the high speed rail link HS2 scheduled for 2026. This sales represents the largest single asset sale in the region during 2019 and follows our recent sale of the Hilton Garden Inn, Birmingham Airport in 2018”.

Jason Hiley, on behalf of the directors at Crest Hotels said: “The sale is part of a wider strategy to look for new opportunities after 14 very successful years of ownership. The strength of the business is a testament to the great team at the hotel, and the company is truly grateful for their hard work and dedication.”
Stevensdrake Solicitors acted for Crest Hotels and Adams & Remers for 11 Hospitality.

That photo brings back some memories I spent my honeymoon night there in 1974 when it was the Buccaneer and next day we flew off to Ibiza (San Antonio ) on a British Aiways One Eleven 400.

No chance of either of San Antonio these days for me or BA for BHX I imagine.

I have only been in once, I took Mrs F to Marco's restaurant when it first opened.

The food was great but our trip unfortunately coincided with Body Power at the NEC, meaning that (apart from us) the whole place was full of body builders.

I see jfy1999 has posted on the Virgin thread about their short season of flights to Orlando, no chance of them operating a similar operation from BHX I suppose as it would impinge on their operations up the M6 or down the M40.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
