[textarea]Ambitious proposal for new North-East airport should spark new debate

AIRPORT PLAN: Artist's impression of the proposed new North-East airport

A RADICAL vision for a new North-East international airport has been unveiled, just as the Government considers the future of the UK’s aviation policy.

The ambitious proposal would see the region’s existing airports - Newcastle and Durham Tees Valley - replaced with a new hub for up to 25 million passengers a year built between the A1 and A19 north of Peterlee, in east Durham.

The state-of-the-art passenger and freight facility would be situated within 20 miles of the region’s major population centres in County Durham, Teesside, Wearside and Tyneside.

Re: New North East England Airport Proposal

I am not from those parts but I find the location of the proposal less than ideal considering the largest city in the area is Newcastle, which is to the North of the Tyne. Getting across the Tyne can be a real pain at peak times - queues for the Tunnel can be lengthy, Newcastle city centre and the Tyne Bridges are also very busy and the A1 along the Team Valley can be a nightmare. Locating the airport here means that the people of Newcastle are losing out compared to those from further South - I doubt they would be very happy at all with this proposal, especially as there is nothing much wrong with Newcastle Airport as it is

Re: New North East England Airport Proposal

This is just typical of the North East. They come up with ides like this...but usually end up getting on and doing them!!! I could actually see this happening. Close to lots of populated areas and good road links.

It is a real shame that the councils of Yorkshire never got together years ago and has a similar discussion. A new international airport somewhere near Castleford or Wakefield with decent rail links to the main cities would have been ideal. Sadly, never going to happen now.

Re: New North East England Airport Proposal

Building an airport with a capacity of 25 million in the North East. That's a third of the size of London Heathrow, the largest international airport in the world and more passengers than Manchester airport, I have my doubts. It would struggle to ever reach it's capacity without a significant number of passengers coming from outside the airports natural catchment area and without airlines committing significant hub activity.

Re: New North East England Airport Proposal

Its just to spark debate, nothing like this would get off the ground. If anywhere needs new airport capacity its the South East, not North East.

Also, they clearly dont want Ryanair flying from there with all those airbridges ;) .

49 trips undertaken last year. First done this year which was to North Wales where surprisingly the only slippery surfaces were in Conwy with the castle and it's walls closed due to the ice.

Well over 4 million steps taken this year already. And about 12,500 photos.
The joys of travel. Train from Edinburgh to Leeds is cancelled so having another night in Edinburgh and heading back in the morning!
Tbf Edinburgh isn't a bad city to be stuck in.
