Biarritz - 4,591 (was as high as 32,967 in 2009)

Those numbers really do highlight the difference in having a route served by Flybe as opposed to Ryanair.

As Ian's fantastic figures point out many routes now look ripe for a loco to help numbers grow even further. With Easyjet not interested in BHX I wonder if Ryanair may be persuaded to do a little more than seemingly just try to see off the competition. An entry into the German market from Birmingham could be interesting.

I won't be holding my breath.

Birmingham Airport has recorded two years of continuous record monthly passenger growth after February became its busiest on record for the Midlands’ biggest airport.
in-dep-lounge.jpg

During the month of February, the airport handled 807,733 passengers – 83,000 more than the same month in 2016 and an 11.5 per cent increase.

Demand increased on both long and short haul services with very significant growth again recorded on long-haul flights - up by a healthy 21 per cent compared to the same month last year. The number of passengers taking short haul flights grew by more than nine percent year-on-year.

Scheduled traffic in February accounted for 91 per cent of the total, with charter passengers making up the remaining nine per cent.

not bad number at all and again great to see double digit growth. Whilst this is set to continue until the end of March with QR started at BHX and the EK 380 started, it will be interesting to see if Jet2 and other growth and keep growth in the double digits moving forward... time will tell..

a quick back of the fag pack suggest the number would have been closer to 12% growth compared to last years 29 day February but still good growth.

for others context, Manchester +11.4% (beat them by 0.1% ;o)), Stansted down -2.2% (oh dear) Edinburgh up just 5.4% (we were only 4,000 pax behind them in February), Luton up 19.5% (in a league of their own) ... overall, the picture is looking good!

Another record (as expected but of course very welcome)! Was anyone else struck by Paul Kehoe's words 'later this year we will consult on our Master Plan to scope out how the current site can be maximised and the benefits of HS2 realised'.
1) 'Current site' doesn't suggest the new site - so much discussed of late
2) 'maximized' - looking at Gatwick's fantastic record for one runway, there is a lot to do on site (terminals, public transport)
3) 'benefits of HS2 realized (?).

The frustrating wait continues before the MasterPlan (a term I don't like) arrives.

Great numbers again (y)

I noticed it too.

Possibly some uncertainty over the future of OTTP? To date all we have heard is that they are looking to sell a minority stake, no further details have been given yet.

There was a lengthy interview with Mr Kehoe in which he said that he was yet to meet with the leader of the City Council to discuss the Master Plan and that when he did he hoped that they would be ambitious.

It'll be interesting to see.

February Pax 2017

January - 775,176 (+16.1%)
February - 807,773 (+11.5%)
March -

July -
August -
September -

Year to date total = 1,582,909
Year to date growth = +13.8%

Rolling 12 month total = 11,836,319 (+14.6%)

Still pretty early days only on the 2nd month so pretty hard to read much into it, but applying the average rolling 12 months growth to our 2016 pax numbers, this gives us a 2017 projection of Circa 13,345,000 pax for 2017….

Likely to change but a great start to 2017. Should be on target to pass the 12,000,000 rolling Pax figure around April?!?

Orlando and Toronto stung a bit but thanks very much for all or your effort it is really appreciated (y)

We had a discussion a few months ago about an airline potentially taking Birmingham by the scruff of the neck and really going to town with some expansion. Looking at your numbers it doesn't half show how the likes of Ryanair pull in the punters and get bums on seats.

Jet2 will add valuable seats to the holiday and city break market and Monarch are showing some promise but I still think we either need Easyjet, or some proper attention from Ryanair, to propel us towards the 15 mppa figure. There is good reason that they are Europe's largest loco's.

It certainly is interesting to see the number of destinations that are below their record passenger numbers. If these could get back to previous levels, that alone would represent some quite substantial growth for BHX.

Certainly agree with Rays thoughts regarding the need for easyJet/Ryanair going to town with expansion at BHX.

I agree coathanger. The airport can only expand within the limits of its physical capacity, and whilst we all want rapid growth and a return to peak levels or more on all routes, if the airport cannot cope physically, then any growth will be snuffed out. PK is no doubt on the case, but with the further announcement this week on UK Central Hub, the opportunities need to be ceased now and an up to date realistic and deliverable master plan for the whole area put in place. Remember the 2013 master plan for UK Central did not include a second runway.

To rerun to the figures, brilliant analysis Ian and another good month.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
