Hi there ray and all, so what passenger numbers are we looking at for July, 1,200,000.00 or more or less, plus what percentage growth are we looking at, 10 or 15 percent.....AndyC1...

Passenger figures for July show that Birmingham Airport has seen its busiest month on record.
Over 1.4 million people travelled through the terminal – giving a 17.6% growth rate year on year.

In total 1,437,528 passengers flew through Birmingham – over 215,000 more than the same month in 2016.

Short haul traffic saw the most significant rate of growth with an increase of 19.3% year on year whereas long haul services saw a 3.3% increase.

Jo Lloyd, Commercial Director at Birmingham Airport, said: “Every month we are seeing significant passenger growth and July is no exception being in the peak of the school summer holiday season.

“This has given us our twenty ninth consecutive month of record breaking growth and our forth million passenger month this year.”

Scheduled traffic accounted for 89 per cent of the total, with charter passengers making up the remaining eleven per cent.

Scheduled traffic overall grew by 20.5 per cent, with significant year-on-year growth to Sofia (+225.8%), Ibiza (+132.3%), Rhodes (+112.3%), Paphos (+81%), Bucharest (+74.1%) and Faro (+72%).

Charter traffic saw expansion on services to Montego Bay (+298.6%), Punta Cana (+79.9%), Malaga (+75.5%) and Antalya (+53.7%).

Great figures but not surprising there were lots of complaints. The infrastructure cannot cope properly with this increase.

July – 1,435,875 (+17.5%) *(Highest Monthly Figure on Record!)*
August -
September -
October -
November -
December -

Year to date total = 7,4935,229
Year to date growth = +16.0%

Rolling 12 month total = 12,688,043 (+16.2%) – passing the 12.5m pax a year figure!!!

So 7 months in and things are hotting up! Jet2 are really making their presence known and growth from the likes of Vueling, Blue Air and Monarch are playing their part. So applying the average rolling 12 months growth to our 2016 pax numbers, this gives us a 2017 projection of circa 13,530,000 pax for 2017….

We are now over half way through the year, and with this being the first Christmas being operated by jet2, I would expect similar growth to continue throughout the rest of 2017. The 13.4-13.5m figure then is looking likely. We may see a little dip as this will be the first winter without United, Norwegian and the Vueling spanish routes and EK reductions, but the dominant force here is jet2 and this is their first winter with a 4 a/c base..and remember EK down graded last year too! I would therefore expect growth to dip slightly to the lower teens but still in healthy double figures!

The figures really do speak for themselves, and whilst it hasn’t always been pretty with regard to the infrastructure, you can now see why. For the first time, BHX has passed EDI in the summer peak by a pretty decent 25,000 pax margin. With the exception of STN, BHX is also the only major UK airport growing more the double-digit growth!

  • LHR 7.5m +1.2%
  • LGW 4.7m +2.4%
  • MAN 3.0m +7.4%
  • STN 2.6m +10.5%
  • LTN 1.6m +6.2%
  • BHX 1.44m +17.5%
  • EDI 1.41m +6.1%
  • GLA 1.1m +6.2%

…and it gets better, in July, BHX grew by more that 215,000 Pax, Manchester ‘only’ grew by 210,000 Pax… (as Ian has beat me to announcing)… again, simply an amazing figure!!!

Great achievement by BHX but don't worry about us MAN lot and bringing in a paltry 4000 less growth in pax than you, as you can see from our figures we are doing just fine, still over twice as fine if I'm being pedantic.....

Glass half August will hopefully be 14-17% increase as well . Can't wait for those glass half empty people to start going on a bout the flights we will loose .

Terrific pax numbers.
I have to admit that I am more concerned with the infrastructure problems than the flights we may or may not be losing,as there is still plenty of time for more to be added in time for the spring.

Sitting here in Hardelot in northern France and a 400 metre container ship has just swum by. Massive, massive and more massive. Very impressive sight, but then I checked the July numbers and another impressive sight. Massive. Long may it continue.

What's next on the horizon...a yacht.

The infrastructure at BHX is a cause for concern, but the positive view must be that within a month we will be into autumn when pax numbers will begin to fall back slightly. Given the pax this July and August and the impact it has and will have on the running of the airport, it does give management there a full nine months in which to implement improvements.

My bigger concern is now that PK has left, and without a successor yet being appointed, do we have a 'voice' there sufficiently dominant to get these improvements undertaken swiftly?

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
