That time of the month again...

August 2023 @ BHX

Total Passengers: 1,307,941
Up 11.6% on August 2022
Down 7.0% on August 2019

12 month rolling total: 11,002,128
Down 13.5% on 2019 highest (Aug 2019 - 12,717,223)

Some key routes:

Dubai: 58,440 | 90.4% LF
Istanbul: 17,455 | 84.9% LF
Doha: 15,141 | 96.1% LF
Jeddah: 6,822 | 80.6% LF

Again Qatar doing very well with their first 2 months back in operation both achieving over 90% load factor. August passenger levels this year to Doha were 15% higher than back in August 2019 and actually Qatar's busiest month at BHX ever. Assuming the loads hold up, hopefully we'll see some kind of increase in frequency or aircraft size in the next 12 months.

@Brum X you'll be happy to see Saudia's loads have improved from 60% in July to 80% in August. No flights in July were B787-10s, with only 1 out of 14 flights being -10s in August, but 8 out of 12 flights in September being the -10 so September should hopefully see another big bump in passenger levels and hopefully that translates across to good loads and yields.

Another honourable mention is Air India's services to Delhi and Amritsar which are up 32% and 29% respectively vs August 2019. Combined DEL/ATQ are now back to where they were in May 2019.

Numbers coming back but we are being outstripped by other airports. May change next year, but the steadier approach may be worth while on the longer term as routes are given time to settle and embed as BAU, before revival destinations and airlines come along.

Good work by all involved.

And great to see Saudi up.

BHX handled just over 1.1m pax in October 2023 which beat October 2019 (pre-pandemic) but fell short of October 2018 was was about 35k more, but good news and another sign the slow recovery continues.
BHX also went through 10m pax on 03.11.23 for 2023 to date, so should land around 11.45m for 2023 in total.
Leaving us to achieve a 13.5% increase in 2024 to get a record annual figure :)

12 month rolling total: 11,131,855

Down 14.8% on all time high of 13,058,440 in the 12 months up to Oct 2017

Istanbul: 16,433 | 81.1% LF
Doha: 13,714 | 90.0% LF
Jeddah: 6,564 | 81.1% LF

From looking at these figures it appears the other ME airlines are having an impact on EK after years of domination, should we be worried and does this show that we have reached saturation point ?

Or is it too early to say ?

Worrying should be a natural consequence of this latest snapshot regarding similar competitive businesses and more importantly, action should be considered to address this. It is clear that BHX is slipping further behind in the post pandemic recovery process. One only has to look at Bristol to judge the results of a singular management focus. Regarding the MEA’s, it is far too early to even consider any data regarding meaningful successful and profitable operations. All aspects of aviation are measured in relative long-term.

Having an impact in what way? September passengers always fall from August; pre-covid averaged an 11% fall from Sep to Aug and this year saw a 13% fall so not too dissimilar.

Dubai/Emirates recovering is continuing - at the start of the year 12 month rolling passenger levels to Dubai had recovered to 68% of pre-covid and by September had increased to 76%.

Looking at the Middle East as a whole, comparing September 2023 to September 2019, Dubai is down by 19%, Doha is up by 33% and Jeddah is a new route. In total, passengers to all three are only down by 2% so basically recovered. Essentially the same number of passengers are travelling as before covid, its just the split between airlines that has changed.

As long as Emirates (and Qatar & Saudia) 12 monthly rolling total keeps increasing, then there's no reason to worry about saturation I'd have thought.

The one to keep an eye on in my mind is Istanbul. September saw passenger levels fall by 10% vs last year, and over the last 3 months passenger levels are down by 7%. They're still above pre-covid, but with Pegasus starting next month, we may not see any additional capacity from Turkish in the near future.

Worrying should be a natural consequence of this latest snapshot regarding similar competitive businesses and more importantly, action should be considered to address this. It is clear that BHX is slipping further behind in the post pandemic recovery process. One only has to look at Bristol to judge the results of a singular management focus.

As I highlighted in the thread discussing the master plan, the demise of Thomas Cook (Sep 2019) and Flybe (Mar 2020) prior to the pandemic - i.e. we didn't get to see the impact before Covid hit - had a massive impact on BHX with the two airlines accounting for almost a quarter of the airport's passengers.

The fact that the airport has recovered to where it has without any new based airline - unlike Bristol which has the benefit of a new Jet2 base, a smaller Thomas Cook operation and little to no Flybe - is a testament to how well the airport is doing.

Most airports have now (or by next summer) recovered to where they were pre-covid and unless they've received any large expansions or new based airlines in the last 12 months, their % growths will start to come back to a more "normal" level. With easyJet opening a base at BHX next year, the airport should continue to see strong growth throughout next summer which should not only keep us ahead of BRS, but will likely increase the gap once again between the two airports.

A new easyJet base, Saudia and Pegasus - sounds like the airport is addressing things to be honest.

From looking at these figures it appears the other ME airlines are having an impact on EK after years of domination, should we be worried and does this show that we have reached saturation point ?

Or is it too early to say ?

In fairness, i think its way too early to tell, but doubt it.

Emirates Figures 2023 vs 2022

BHX-DXB: 50,973 Pax 2023 vs 43,898 Pax 2022 (+16%)

In capacity terms, there is a 21% increase in capacity from the 2x daily 77W in Sept 2022 to the 1x daily 77W and 1x daily 388 in 2023... So the very fact that pax levels has broadly following increases in capacity up against significant competition from the likes of QR and SV is pretty impressive!

I agree, "all aspects of aviation ate measured in relative long-term" and as such i think the current success of Bristol should be seen accordingly.

With regard to Bristol,

  • an airport with established bases from all 4 key UK leisure markets (RYR/EZY/TUI/JET2) which it is currently reaping the benefits of.
  • an airport with very real physical and policy constraints on its growth. the current cap has been increased to 12m pax a year
  • an an airport which has benefited from the near collapse of its immediate competitor in CWL. its now has a monopoly in its immediate market.

Lets look at some key markets to show in Aug 2024:

BRS-ALC (BHX-ALC)
  • easyJet: 17x weekly (0x weekly)
  • Jet2: 4x weekly (11x weekly)
  • Ryanair: 14x weekly (11x weekly)
  • Tui: 0x weekly (3x weekly)
Total: 35x weekly (25x weekly) - 10 less than BRS

BRS-AGP (BHX-AGP)

  • easyJet: 18x weekly (0x weekly)
  • Jet2: 4x weekly (7x weekly)
  • Ryanair: 8x weekly (10x weekly)
  • Tui: 2x weekly (2x weekly)
Total: 32x weekly (19x weekly) - 13 less than BRS

The reality is that many people on here often complain when when airlines increase capacity on "dull routes" like the above, but this is where you can get the pax levels and revenues from! That is 23 weekly flights (or 8,250 seats a week) more available at BRS than BHX on just 2 routes alone.

The good news is that as of next year, we now have an Easyjet base starting from BHX. This is a slow start of only 3 aircraft to start, and current schedules suggest easyjet will only be adding 2x weekly flights to ALC and 3x weekly flights to AGP in the first year (TBC) but there is hope that as the base establishes, this could grow significantly over the next few years. Reports also suggest that (Boeing deliveries allowing) Ryanair could be poised to react also allowing for the potential for more capacity to be added.

The point being, BHX has by its own admission let its eye off the ball with regard to attracting Loco carriers, but seems to have turned a corner which i think will start to expand the current narrowing gap in pax figs between BHX and BRS.

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!
If anyone would like to share their local airport news right here in our news area let me know so I can give you the correct permissions to do so. It only takes a couple of minutes to upload a news story with an accompanying image. The news items can then be shared on the site homepage by you. #TakePart #Forums4airports Bring the news to one place!
survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
