Edinburgh Airport will soon be taking passengers to Abu Dhabi, after Etihad Airways unveiled plans for new routes to the United Arab Emirates.

The UAE national carrier will next year launch its first service from Scotland with the start of a non-stop daily flight from Edinburgh.

The new route, which will commence on 8th June, 2015, will be operated with a two-class Airbus A330-200 aircraft, offering a total of 22 seats in business class and 240 seats in economy class.

EDI seems to be picking up a number of long haul routes, albeit some are seasonal:

Air Canada Rouge to Toronto Pearson
United to Newark and to Chicago O'Hare
US Airways to Philadelphia
Qatar to Doha
as well as Turkish to Istanbul which is probably not quite long haul.

Etihad will be a bit of competition for Emirates at Glasgow and also at Newcastle.

Reading some of the reviews it would appear Etihad is arguably a better airline than Emirates anyway.

At least we can discuss Etihad on this forum unlike on a certain well known aviation forum 😛lums: where it appears to be a banned topic.

It seems odd because most people regard Etihad as an excellent airline and the more publicity it gets that it's expanding would be, I should have thought, a good thing for it.

It's certainly a coup for EDI. I wish it would come to the South West but there seems little likelihood of that happening.

Etihad will reduce Edinburgh flights to 5 weekly from 25th October.

Flights will run Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday only.

Glasgow would have worked better for them. There seems to be an obsession with Edinburgh just because it's the capital of Scotland, where as Glasgow is by far the largest city in Scotland offering a better chance of making the route more successful.

Edinburgh have had a little trouble with their flight today. A6-EHL, which is an A340-600, was unable to pushback due to a towbar issue.

It doesnt have a longer runway but the taxiway must be wider or the bit at the end of the runway is. Im pretty sure the runway extension taxiway at BHX would be wide enough (Runway 33) but maybe not the Runway 15 end ??

It seems Hainan might have come at a cost as it is now being reported on another forum that AUH-EDI will be terminated from November 1 this year according to Skyscanner and EDI airport employees.

Obviously a lot of connecting traffic to the Far East is up for grabs, and with Emirates at GLA and NCL as well as Qatar upgrading to the A359 it seems something had to give.

While EK and QR continue to expand, EY are pulling routes and suffering financial trouble.

ME3 really are struggling on some routes at the moment

Noticed Qatar are still only around 69% load factor out of BHX in february, not amazing at all.
