Manchester Airport is celebrating a record-breaking 2017, after it saw more passengers than ever fly from the airport.

Last year saw 27,791,274 passengers pass through the airport’s three terminals, representing an 8.5% increase year on year, with cargo up 9% to 123,576 tonnes.

Indeed, a truly phonominal 2017 for the airport, and all the signs are this will be replicated during 2018.

A pleasant surprise to see the month of December up 1.5% as well. They expect to see pax numbers continue to rise in 2018 so evidently confident the MON loss has been more than made good.

Fantastic numbers - my brother was amazed when I told him what the passenger numbers were like when we were coming through T3 on Sunday.

Looking at the growth in passenger numbers over recent years, we have:

Now let's attempt to some 2018 projections. I'll only do this on a 3 lots of increases- 1.5% (the pessimistic view), 4.5% (the figure we seem to have in mind) and hitting the magical 30 million passenger mark

So if the performance of the last 2 years is anything to go by, it is potentially this year for the 30 million mark. If it does happen then it will be on the back of the rumoured increase in easyJet based aircraft.

This, and the rumoured Ryanair increase, are key.
As a guide, and based on some estimates, the figures below give some indication of the importance of more based a/c.

Easyjet: 1 extra a/c doing say 21 departures a week or 42 sectors with say 170 seats (average A319/320), provides 7,140 seats a week.

Just for the summer, say 20 weeks with some flights only starting June is 142,800 seats.
So, on the same basis, 2 extra a/c is 285,600 seats.
5 a/c would be 714,000 seats.

Then, some of that growth would presumably continue into the winter months of Nov/Dec.

On the same assumptions, 3 Ryanair a/c with 189 seats is
476,000 seats over 20 weeks.

Yes, longer sectors might mean only 2 rotations on some days as opposed to 3, but short sectors could mean 4 rotations.

Extra seats have to be filled but as David alluded, the extent of expansion by easyjet in particular, plus Ryanair, on top of known increases by TCX and Jet2 will largely determine how close we can get to 30m pax, subject of course to outside influences such as economic crisis, wars etc. New long haul flights are very welcome for prestige and growth but in terms of big numbers, it's MAN's regular airlines flying day-in, day-out, that can make the difference.

Provisionally the 18th busiest in Europe. About 420,000 passengers ahead of Oslo but 69,000 short of Palma with a further 1.2 million passengers to Copenhagen. Therefore, it's not unrealistic to say that we've hit the upper limit of where we can be in Europe's busiest airports.

Just done a quick play with the Emirates passenger numbers. Averages around 495 per flight. For loads, I'll look at the smallest LF, the highest LF and what it may have ended up as (no, I'm not going to check up!)

3 x 615 seater = 114390 available seats = 80.43% loads
3 x 497 seater = 92442 available seats = 99.53% loads
1 x 615 seater, 2 x 519 seater = 102486 available seats = 89.77% loads.

Thanks David. I think it's normally just the evening flight that is 3 class with 615 seats. We flew out fairly recently on the lunchtime EK18, and the senior purser told me there were 509 pax on board out of 517 seats.

A couple of other LFs I looked at for December:
I made CX with 14,443 pax (an increase of 41%) to be 88.9%. based on 58 sectors. Average load 249.

Oman with 10,091 pax was an average load of 163, which is 75.5% on the A332. Were there variations in type?

EY was an average load of 328 but don't know the a/c mix.

QR was an A/L of 203 and SV an A/L of 221.

SQ I made 161 on SIN and 117 on IAH.

It does make you bring out the frustration that CX seemingly dithered for far too long in restoring their service in that they got 90% loads from the start and now the 1st month of daily services seeing the loads impacted by going down by a single percentage point. Now what would be interesting is if there was some way of knowing how many connected at HKG for other destinations. Remember that VS baulked at the idea of doing MAN-HKG as they decided the perceived market at the time wasn't sustainable for relatively high frequency ops (90,000 annual passengers on origin+destination basis or 7,500 passengers per month).

The real world reticence of airlines looking at the regions for long-haul is such a handicap. Time for that old-fashioned handbook to be thrown away.

Manchester Statistics - December 2017 (Part 1)

Destinations that are either new (no passengers since my records started in January 2005), or have not been served for a number of years - if the latter then the month and year of the last service is shown.

Edmonton appears for the first time, however I am slightly skeptical of the CAA data of 3 scheduled passengers.
Kharkov (Ukraine) was another newcomer with 565 charter passengers.

One domestic statistic are currently missing from the CAA report for December.

Just looking at Helsinki, i'm mindful of the PR piece regarding Finnair ("Finnair has announced that it will be increasing capacity between Manchester and Helsinki by 12 per cent") but to see that traffic was up 32% is especially pleasing. Loads in 2016 would appear to have averaged something like 73 per flight... but 2017 it was 97 per flight.

Finnair via HEL is a popular choice with Chinese students on days when Hainan doesn't fly. And there has been more of those this Winter. Could be a factor. The 9.66% drop on Norwich caught my eye. I thought the drop might be worse given that Loganair and FlyBe were in the peak of their feud at that time. Was domestic connectivity lost between those two carriers?

JANUARY'18.
I was expecting worse due to the MON impact, but MAN reporting Terminal pax down just 0.05% (900 pax) for the month. Including transit was down 0.45%. I assume the fall of 6,700 transit pax was primarily due to PIA's JFK service.

ATMs were down 2.88% but freight was up slightly.

Manchester Airport edges towards 28 million passengers
As the winter months continue, Manchester Airport is edging closer to breaking the 28m passenger number for the first time in its history.

The UK’s third biggest airport saw its annual rolling total hit 27,790,196 in January, which represents like-for-like year-on-year growth of 7.45%.

More than 1.6m people passed through the UK’s global gateway in the North during the month, which was broadly flat on 2017.

The demise of Monarch late last year offset increased passenger volumes delivered by other airlines, though a series of announcements paint a positive picture ahead of the Summer season.

Jet.2com is picking up some of the capacity and will therefore split its operations between its current base in Terminal One and Terminal Two. It will see Jet2.com flights to Lanzarote, Majorca, Tenerife and Malaga using Terminal Two from early April.

Last month Ryanair also announced a $300m investment at Manchester Airport by basing an additional three aircraft at the UK’s global gateway in the North, which will also see the airline deliver ten additional destinations.

Looking further ahead, the airport is gearing up for the launch of a new service to Seattle, with Thomas Cook Airlines, and the return of popular direct routes to San Francisco and Boston.

Also this month Andrew Cowan was made chair of the newly formed Manchester India Partnership, which will see closer links between the two destinations form.

Manchester Airport’s cargo operations continue to grow with the rolling annual tonnage at 123,676, year on year growth of 8.32%.

MAG’s three airports have now served 58.6 million passengers in the last 12 months on a like-for-like basis, an increase of 6.7% on last year. At London Stansted, 1,801,994 passengers flew in January 2018, a 3.3% increase despite Ryanair cancelling some winter services this year. The Group’s biggest cargo airport, East Midlands, saw a 12.6% growth in cargo tonnage in January despite a small drop in passenger numbers (-2.7%).

I believe we still have the reduced schedule which was imposed on a number of Ryanair routes when the pilots' leave issue arose. Hopefully, once restored to full strength (late March?) these cutbacks will not recur. 900 pax equates to less than three return flights on a fully-sold B738.
