Hope we can keep United for BHX though. On the trains, EWR is far more convenient for getting into Manhattan than JFK is.

On the road too, not far from the Lincoln Tunnel straight into Chelsea Village. Much faster than than the slog in from Queens.

When is the flight expected to depart JFK in British time?

If it's on time it should be 23:50 UK time.

Beaten to it :D

Interesting. I've never been to New York but it's top of the list for when the kids are old enough for a long flight. Would people recommend EWR over JFK? The convenience of accessing Manhattan seems to be a big plus for EWR but what of the arrivals experience? I seem to hear alot about huge lines at JFK? Is EWR any better?

Also, for people who have experienced both AA and UA, does the service differ much? I often read horror stories about the lack of service on American carriers but is it really as bad as people make out?

N186AN just landed but it took the path from the southwest over Worcestershire, so it didn't go over my house. :(

My Dad has flown economy UA26 to EWR several times. The length of the flight is a real issue for anyone in economy, but the real bummer was the American customs clearance. One of his colleagues got taken aside for a long telling-off after trying to make the oficers hurry up.

From my own expierence I've never suffered the kind of horror story queues you often read about and that goes for both JFK and EWR. I agree that EWR is more convenient for accessing Manhatten and if you're sitting on the left flying in you get a great view of the city.

However I'd argue that flying to/from JFK offers a better overall passenger experience - EWR was looking a bit drab last time I flew in (granted that was 2007 so things could have changed) whereas Terminal 4 at JFK is pretty good and I'd imagine AA's new terminal is too. Plus JFK offers a it more variety than endless UA tails lined up!

I've flown Virgin from LHR but also Northwest/Delta/KLM via AMS which worked out much cheaper than going direct to EWR.

I think queue lenghths are all down to what time you arrive - I've also arrived at SFO and didn't have a problem but go to SFB when all the Thomson flights arrive and it's like arriving in hell!

I saw some great photos of the inaugural AA flight from BHX-JFK. The 757 really is a beautiful aircraft. So long and thin, with the retro fitted winglets really topping it off! I find myself continuously shocked that Boeing discontinued the 757 with no replacement.

It's the perfect aircraft for a 'long and thin' route such as BHX-JFK where frequent flights are essential for viability, but demand not high enough for a wide-body. AA and many other airlines have pushed Boeing many times to recommence production of the 757 or to create a replacement. Boeing aren't interested at all, and the 'A321neo-LR' (long range) is very interesting indeed. I found this article to be a good read:

http://airwaysnews.com/blog/2015/05/07/ ... l-757-gap/

I find it a bit annoying that the two flights we have to New-York (AA & UI) both leave within minutes of each other but oh well! I wish AA every success and will be flying with them next year to the West Coast via JFK!

Hard to say Ray as I've stayed in mid-town Manhattan when flying into Newark so it's very handy.

On the JFK trips, I have stayed up in Connecticut, but the journeys seem to take forever.

Was looking at prices for flights in January and the one date I looked at showed only x3 business class seats left. Good sign? Economy fares seemed quite reasonable.

Good luck to AA/BHX on this one, it simply has to work.

A very good sign if business seats for Jan are already selling well.

American Airlines Launch Flights From Birmingham to New York JFK

Birmingham Airport and American Airlines have launched direct daily flights between Birmingham and New York John F. Kennedy Airport (JFK).

The route will provide nearly 100,000 seats between Birmingham Airport and JFK, and through the American Airlines and British Airways joint business and oneworld airline alliance, will offer a British Airways code share, allowing customers to earn and redeem BA air miles and Avios points.

David Winstanley, chief operating officer at Birmingham Airport with David Thomas, UK sales director for American Airlines and Miss United States, as they celebrate the launch of flights between Birmingham Airport and New York JFK with American Airlines.

David Winstanley, Chief Operating Officer for Birmingham Airport said: “We warmly welcome today’s new American Airlines daily service between Birmingham and New York JFK as it provides more choice for people wanting to access this vibrant US destination and has created almost 100,000 extra seats between the two cities.

“American Airlines’ strong route network from JFK also broadens onward connectivity across the Americas and Canada, including nearly hourly connections to LA, San Francisco and Orlando, and international flights down to Buenos Aires, San Paulo and Rio, as well as up to Toronto and Montreal.

“This joint business and oneworld alliance with British Airways also means that we see the return of a British Airways code share to Birmingham, allowing customers to earn and redeem BA air miles and Avios points.”

Last year, American tourists spent around £40m in Birmingham and the Midlands exported £4.8bn to North America, giving a trade surplus of £2.9bn; the largest of any UK region.

David added: “This service will not only help to build on the region’s success in attracting trading with America, but with so many wonderful places on our doorstep such as Stratford-up-Avon, Warwick and the Cotswolds, we’re confident that this new flight will draw in even more tourists and business to the region.”

The American Airlines flight will operate daily, arriving from JFK into Birmingham at 0700 local UK time. It will depart for its return leg at 0900, arriving into New York JFK at 1155 local US time.

The new flights are available via AA.com and BA.com and through travel agents. The service will be operated by a Boeing 757 aircraft with 16 business and 160 economy seats.

Helen Grice, manager at the British American Business Council for the midlands, commented: “The British American Business Council (BABC) Midlands is delighted to welcome American Airlines to Birmingham. The USA is the world’s largest and most competitive economy in the world, it is also the UK’s top export destination. The extra flights will benefit our 2000 members as well as the Region’s businesses by increasing opportunities for trade and providing more choice when flying to and from the US.”

American is a founding member of the oneworld alliance, the world’s leading quality airline alliance bringing together 15 of the best global airlines, whose members and members-elect serve nearly 1,000 destinations with 14,250 daily flights to 150 countries. The oneworld alliance holds an unprecedented six of the eight most competitive "best airline alliance" titles from top travel media and award organisations.

I haven't had a ride in a 757 since the mid 80's when BA used them on super shuttle services between LHR and BFS !!!
have they improved any ??
Great to see an aircraft still doing the biz 30 years later..... :hatsoff:
I seem to remember that it was developed in tandem with the 767, giving pilots the ability to fly both aircraft...

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
