It's a Harvester now, I was in there a few weeks back.

I used to drink Mild in The Journeys End on Clay Lane. Not the nicest but it £1.16 per pint it was great for a student (y)

The Stables for me. Plus the other pubs in and around Solihull. Bought my first pint in the Mason Arms in Solihull High Street.

I remember Arden Oak. Pool and warm beer.

Bring back the Brighton Arms. Took a Man City fan in there once. I can't recall if he ever left....

....sadly now a posh pizza restaurant. KRO

BTW anyone enjoying the Olympics? If you have not seen it check out the video of Ester Ledecka winning gold. Wonderful reaction...

I was more Hurst street Ray, but going out was so good in the 90s and early 2000s.

Thursday and Saturday nights used to be good in the "gay village" Lots of people used to start off in Route 66 which is now a lap dancing club and then you would go to either The GALE (The Nightingale) or Subway City. I was a Subway city as i was more Dance music where as The GALE was more cheesy music.

The owner of Subway City (Mr Bill Gavin) who also organised the very first Birmingham Pride over 20 years ago used to put on a free bus over to the club as it used to be on Livery Street near to the BT Tower and i used to remember thinking this was so cool as it used to be a normal West Midlands Travel double decker bus, well you can imagine that was a laugh with everybody being a bit tipsy on the top deck and i remember thinking i really need to get off this bus very soon otherwise im going to :sick::sick::sick::sick::sick::sick::sick::sick::sick::sick::sick::sick:

Thursday nights at Subway used to be pay £10 and free drinks all night. :joyful::joyful::joyful::joyful::joyful::joyful:

Then all again on the Saturday night, only this time for longer. Subway City was one of maybe just 1/2 other nightclubs in the whole city that could stay open till 4/5/6am in the morning. This was before the relaxed licensing hours when all bars shut at 11pm and nightclubs shut at 2am, so being in a club till 6am in the morning made you feel very naughty but it was cool at the same time.:cool::cool::cool::cool:

I miss those days sooooooooooooooooooo much. Technology has destroyed nightlife, you dont need to go out and meet people anymore, you can click on your iphone. LOL

Subway City.....Only went a handful of times but the late opening was great.

then you would go to either The GALE (The Nightingale)

I always liked Angels, is it still around?

There was also a place called DV8 which I went in a few times, I've not heard it mentioned for ages so I assume that it's no longer going?

My clubbing days are long gone, if they ever existed, but I'm interested in your comment above. Is this really having an effect on nightlife?

Angels is now called Sidewalk and DV8 is called Amusement 13.

Sadly i never visited Brum's clubs and bars in my youth but i was often in the city for sporting reasons, either cricket or football - and occasionally athletics.

And it is that last interest that allows me to daintily segway into something that has really wound me up this weekend.

I love all sport and particularly sport which allows everyone in the community to join in and enjoy it without it costing them a fortune.

Currently we have the Winter Olympic Games in Pyongyang which is largely dominated by countries with a climate more suited to snow, ie Scandinavian countries, Germany, Austria etc etc. For any Brits who want to compete in competitions in these sports then, more than likely, they need to practise their skiing etc in those countries. And that means they are most likely people who have a lot more money than someone who wants to play football for his town or city or who wants to take up running or athletics in general.

So, when the Winter Olympic Games is flooding the BBC, on both BBC One and BBC Two today i was particularly annoyed that there was no coverage of the British Indoor Athletics Champions which are currently being held at the NIA here in Brum. I would have much preferred to watch that and give support to our magnificent athletes.

I do support those Brits who are competing in Pyongyang and applaud their success, but let's have a bit of fair play here by the BBC, why was it necessary to have the Winter Olympics on both BBC One and Two (at times) and there be no e live athletics coverage today. Or is the reason, dare i say, that it was being held in Birmingham......?

Wait a few weeks and once again we host the WORLD indoor athletics championships. I say again as it is the 3rd time. We should get to keep it! Wait another 4 years and we get to host all those lovely countries from around the globe. Cannot wait.

Winter Olympics have been fun. I am not nationalistic or particularly patriotic when it comes to sport so I get excited whoever wins.

Going back to the Night Out subject, I was a singer and in a band in the 80s, and also used to sing at various open mike nights including The Bear Sperkhill, The Hobbs Meadow(Viking) Solihul, and a few other local pubs, Club wise for me it was Rummys (Rum Runner) being a new romantic back then, The Powerhouse (I was a DJ there) Snobs - downstairs, also Pagoda Park, Edwards No7 and The Bear Keller.
Great time but So so long ago - where does the time go.

E.

Bit of a dark horse there Elmdon80slad I used to frequent The Viking occasionally as well as the Cresta Club above the ice rink I lived just across from Lode Lane.

I had hope in Cotterill a few weeks back but along comes hope and bam it all goes wrong. I predict -47 by the seasons end...but next season we will be in the play offs...from Div 1

For our three very local clubs the prospect is not one local derby game next season: Villa promoted to the Premiership, Albion relegated to the Championship and Blues relegated to Div 1.

As the first witch in Macbeth said: "When will we three meet again, in thunder, lightning or in rain...."

Not for a few years - at least!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
